I will admit, I get annoyed when I see people who WORK in the animal behavior field portray cats as "untrainable assholes" -- so now -- a thread of cats who are trained for lots of cool shit. This is just the tip of the iceburg!!!
It was actually really difficult to put this post together because I found so many distressing videos of cats online with millions of views and likes. I can only hope that by speaking out, we can stop these videos from becoming so popular.
Ten days ago my father-in-law died of covid (not "with"). I hesitate to post bc trolls but people need to know...regardless of how you feel about covid, it's still here, it's still airborne, and it's still affecting people and their loved ones.

Just putting it out there...some cats may be okay with this type of handling, but most will not be. Yes, you could train your cat to do this, or you could just think before you act.
Please don't give lilies to friends with cats.
Please don't bring lilies home if you have cats.
And please spread the word about how dangerous lilies are to cats.

How should you use a spray bottle with your cats?
I don't EVER recommend using a spray bottle to punish or "train" your cats. It's unnecessary, not very effective, and can come with side effects (like changing your cat's feelings about you, not in a good way).
How did I become a cat behaviorist? I started almost 20 years ago, working in an animal shelter, then I got a PhD in animal behavior.
If you want to understand cats, study them. These are some books I love, that I go back to again & again.

I wrote this article for the Dodo 9 years ago. It's still, sadly, very relevant.
There is no safe way to have lilies in your home if you have cats. There is always a risk that they will find them and ingest enough to become poisoned and die.
The hardest part of loving them is letting them go. Rest in peace sweetest Clarabelle, 11/23/2003-5/11/2020. We will miss you so much and we will love you forever.

You have to address the motivation for the behavior first (does he want food, attention, to be up high?). Provide outlets for those behaviors and reward him for good behavior. More than I can say in a tweet but this is kind of thing I help my behavior clients with
Did you know that cats are not an apex predator?
Hint: they are a mesopredator, sometimes referred to as a "super predator."
(just in case you're seeing misinformation in a thousand places)

Oh yeah, a week and a half ago we did a thing! We adopted three sisters (all torbies!)!! Meet Coriander, Professor Scribbles, and Ruby!! They are full of purrs when they aren't (literally) climbing the curtains.

I spoke at an event 2 weeks ago. 150 people, about 10 of us w/masks. I was asked by staff if I would take off my mask while I gave my talk, and asked again at the end of the day to do so for photos. I said no to both; few days later we get an email reporting attendees covid+
My new publication in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice with Dr. Leticia Dantas on feeding cats for optimal well-being is out and free to download until 9/18!
A lot of my cat behavior clients experience "bedroom issues" - because both cats want to sleep in the bed, but don't particularly want to be close to one another! Some tips on how to help!!
Remember -- sharing a harmful viral video, commenting on it, quote-tweeting it etc all give it more attention, and make it more likely to be seen by more people and boost it in algorithms. Please don't tag me in videos that depict harm/annoying things being done to cats.
I guess it's time to make it official. My postdoc is over, goodbye

, it's been a great 3-1/2 years. Hello,
@officialgooddog
, I'm excited to apply my research skills and animal welfare knowledge in a completely new setting!!
some generic tips for helping your cats sleep all night:
1. play w/them lots but especially in evening
2. feed a meal at your bedtime
3. don't feed them first thing when you wake up (they learn "vertical human = food" QUICKLY)
4. don't feed them at 3 AM if they meow!
I'm presenting to a room of ~150+ people today. The stage manager "is there anything I can do to convince you to take off your mask while you present?" Me: "test everyone in the room." Stage manager "never mind"
I am so excited and honored to be able to write this book: Play with Your Cat! about my absolute favorite topic. Coming to you from

My co-authored study on how human personality traits impact attachments to pet cats (and humans!) was recently published! If you'd like a copy of the manuscript, DM me!
Confession: I've never bathed my cats. Cats don't need a bath unless they get skunked or get into something unpleasant (with the rare exception of a few breeds of cats that need additional skin care). Most cats can bathe themselves just fine.

I think one of my least favorite cat myths is that they think we are their servants. Why? Because we have to feed them and clean their litter box? They can't do those things themselves! We are their caretakers.
Pro-tip: if you train your cats to ring a bell for treats, don't leave said bell somewhere that they can ring it at any time to let you know what they want 😂

Excellent point. It is stressful for cats to be overweight. Painful joints, can't perform natural behaviors like grooming, etc!

Here's part 1...
Re-reviewing a manuscript about cat litter box usage and please to see that both myself and "Reviewer 2" encouraged the authors to change "inappropriate elimination" to "house soiling." (Note: house soiling may be perfectly appropriate if the litter box isn't maintained properly)
on a mission to get people to stop referring to cat behavior as "inappropriate." most behavior "problems" are simply an animal responding to a stressful or unsuitable environment.

On today's to-do list: writing my resignation letter from my postdoc. I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt a little to acknowledge I won't be staying in academia.

🎒 What's the problem with backpack carriers? There are a lot of cat carriers that aren’t designed with the cat's best interests in mind, which can lead to extra stress. The important thing is to find the right balance between meeting your cats needs and what works for you. 👇
