I spent a significant chunk of 2020 reading and thinking about Mike Davis. The result is this essay in @thenation from the forthcoming print issue on his life and work.

The temporary end of the shutdown isn't a victory for Nancy Pelosi or any other Democratic elected official. It's a victory for the airport workers who called in sick and threatened to go on strike. They raised the specter of airline chaos and forced Trump's hand.

The largest uprising of any kind in American history just took place against exactly the kind of policies Kamala Harris has instituted throughout her political career — and that uprising made zero impact on Biden's decisionmaking for his VP pick. Pretty amazing.

It sucks to eat shit. But imagine how many times someone like Bernie Sanders has eaten shit politically over his life. If he had given up the 1st time, or the 2nd time, or the 100th time, he wouldn't be playing the key role that he is in the resurgent left movement in the US.

This “pox on both your houses” rhetoric is wrong. One side, @AOC ’s, is on the right side of history, taking uncompromising stances against moral horrors on the border & elsewhere. Pelosi’s side is making excuses for why they won’t—and attacking those who criticize that position.

Black lives depend on whether America can be what we want to believe it is. What we need it to be. What it could be. Systemic racism is so woven into the fabric of this country, facing it will take action, honesty, listening, and deep, deep change. And for many of us, humility.
