Pittsburgh — we are deeply disappointed in the news that Beyoncé has canceled her performance on August 3. We were fully prepared to welcome her to Pittsburgh and honor her with an official day recognizing her visit and accomplishments.
Be it resolved that I, City of Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, officially rename Pittsburgh for the international superstar
@taylorswift13
in honor of her sold-out weekend of shows in our great City.
Welcome to Switftsburgh!
@MayorEdGainey
has officially renamed the City of Pittsburgh for the international superstar
@taylorswift13
in honor of her sold-out weekend of shows in our great City.
CommUnity — Pittsburgh lost a legend today. I ask that you join me in praying for the family and friends of Franco Harris. Not only was he the greatest running back in the history of the
@Steelers
, but a great man off the field whose kindness and generosity was felt by many.
I'm honored, humbled, and proud that the people of Pittsburgh have placed their faith in me by making me their Democratic Nominee for the office of Mayor. This election made history, and I'm ready to go to work building a Pittsburgh where all can belong, contribute, and succeed!
This means that until strikers’ demands are met, I will NOT be speaking with the
@PittsburghPG
. I will, however, gladly speak with the striking worker-run
@thePUPNews
— which I encourage you to subscribe to today.
Today
@Duolingo
celebrates 10 years of innovation, educational ingenuity, & technological prowess. Tech is no longer the new economy; it's the economy of today & it is growing in
@Pittsburgh
. Congratulations to everyone at Duolingo — I cannot wait to see what the next 10 bring.
Here in
@Pittsburgh
we recognize March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility. We recognize the unique & profound accomplishments of trans people. Often overlooked and misrepresented, the trans community is part of the weaving that makes the fabric of the Steel City so strong.
Pittsburgh, today we uplift our transgender and gender non-conforming friends, neighbors, and family members. We celebrate their resilience and achievements, and we recognize the challenges they continue to face.
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court seeks to criminalize unhoused people simply for being unhoused. Nothing about the ruling today will change Pittsburgh’s approach to caring for our unhoused residents with dignity and respect.”
For years, the Hill District has been advocating for a grocery store in their neighborhood, and
@SalemsMarketPGH
has truly answered that call.
This community-owned market is going to be a game changer in the Hill.

I believe in people who know how to build bridges. I believe in people who see your heart. I believe in people who overcome adversity. I believe in a woman who came through the ranks, worked hard & studied every single day until she made it here.
I believe in Sara Innamorato.
We are in conversations with the promoter for the event in order to gain an understanding about what led to the cancellation, and if there is anything we can do as a city to find a new date or location for her show.
It’s a great day when you get to stop by a local bookstore. Thanks
@whitewhalebks
for all of the recommendations.
Make sure to support our local, small businesses, if you can’t stop by make sure to check out to shop online & attend virtual events!
Pittsburgh — join me in celebrating this historic $1.5 million investment into the North Side.
Reconnecting Manchester and Chateau will revitalize these neighborhoods while starting to address the systemic failures of discriminatory transit policy. (1/4)
Great news for folks in Pittsburgh's North side: $1.4 Million in Infrastructure funding to begin righting the wrongs of red-lining is coming your way!
Proud to partner with
@SenBobCasey
on this investment to help working families & small businesses here in Western PA.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with the striking workers of the Post-Gazette. For 10 months, they have been on strike for their rights, fair treatment, and the future of journalism in PGH.
To the striking workers, we stand with you and are inspired by you daily.

Pittsburgh, please join me in praying for the family of Chief Justin McIntire and the entire community of Brackenridge. Chief McIntire lost his life last night while protecting his community from violence.
Transgender people who live or work in the City of Pittsburgh deserve to feel safe, loved, and supported in all areas of their lives. These radio ads and their hateful rhetoric only exist to further harm and marginalize an already vulnerable community.
Pittsburgh has been and always will be a union town. We will ALWAYS stand with a worker’s right to organize for better pay, better working conditions, and a better workplace for all. Today, we stand with
@pghsbuxunited
on strike in Bloomfield and the Eastside.
"One person can't change a city. A city is changed with all of us," Gainey told his supporters. "A city is changed when we all come together to improve the quality of life for everybody. That's why I ran for mayor: because we can have a city for all."
Pittsburgh – I ask for you to join us in prayer tonight for the entire community of Garfield, a peaceful neighborhood that was home to an unfortunate tragedy today.

Please join me in praying for all those impacted by the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore this morning. We know all too well what it means to wake up to the news of a bridge collapsing & Pittsburgh is ready & willing to help where we can in the days & months ahead.
This morning, I had the honor of announcing Amera Gilchrist as my nominee for the next chief of Pittsburgh’s Bureau of EMS. She will be the first African American and the first woman to serve in this position, and I am humbled to work alongside her.
“This is another clear example of how the Peduto Administration's development agenda is displacing local businesses to make way for luxury development, just like it's doing to families who have been here for generations. We need to invest in locally owned small businesses...” 1/2
Today it was announced that a large new bookstore is opening at The Terminal in the Strip. We have some Thoughts.
TL;DR, White Whale got taken advantage of, and this is a cautionary tale. Buckle up! (Same text on images as on this thread)

Senator Fetterman's public acknowledgment of the treatment he is getting will help break down the stigma around Mental Health and remind everyone that it can get better, especially when you get professional help. (2/3)
“It is time for the City of Pittsburgh to conduct a systematic review of all property … that is currently designated as tax-exempt and not paying property taxes.”
It is my honor to announce that
@Pittsburgh
is welcoming new neighbors. Together with our immigrant and refugee community, we will build an inclusive city for all. We will celebrate culture and ensure everyone in Pittsburgh has the opportunity to thrive.
Ed Gainey is the only candidate to be endorsed by elected Black women.
“The work these women have done to support & uplift their communities has paved the way for progress in Pittsburgh. I'm thankful to have their support as we carry on this fight, together.”

The First Amendment gives us the right to our religious beliefs, it does not give us the right to discriminate against our fellow citizens because of who they love.
Pittsburgh — please join me in praying for the family of the McKeesport Police Officer taken from us, the Officer injured during the tragic incident, and the entire community of McKeesport.
CommUnity — please join me in praying for a quick recovery for Damar Hamlin and for strength for his family during this difficult time. He loves his community and has a strong commitment to family — that commitment is what led him to being a stand out player at Pitt.
The City of Pittsburgh today announced the inauguration and swearing-in of Mayor-Elect Ed Gainey as the 61st Mayor of Pittsburgh. In accordance with guidance from public health officials, the ceremony will take place virtually. /1
When we talk downtown, let’s be honest: we’re facing a battle of perception. We can show the numbers, talk about the work we’ve done to clean our streets and increase safety measures, highlight the businesses popping up and the record number of people coming into our City.

Pittsburgh, I ask that you join me in praying for all those who have been impacted by the recent gun violence in our city, which once again is leaving multiple lives forever changed due to the inability to settle personal conflicts peacefully.

It was an honor to meet Jameah this morning. She is a student at Penn Hills Elementary, who interviewed me for
#BlackHistoryMonth
. We have an incredible historian or journalist in the making!
Tyre Nichols was a father, he was an artist, a skater, a young man who was loved and had a full life ahead of him. Today a mother no longer has a son and a child no longer has his father.
CommUnity. Yesterday I called on the
@HACP1
to extend the eviction moratorium for all residents with unpaid debts and work with my administration to provide the necessary financial support services to residents. Together we will build a better Pittsburgh for all. Thank you
It was important for be to come down to the South Side to talk with residents and see what is happening on East Carson St.
This visit was important as we continue to build out Pittsburgh’s plan for peace to ensure that everyone is safe in our city. 1/2
Good morning to everyone except the UPMC (and other nonprofit) execs who still need to start paying their fair share to the city of Pittsburgh!
There’s only 13 days to go, what can YOU do to help elect Ed Gainey as our FIRST Black Mayor??
Stopped on the Northside to cheer on
@PGHMarathon
runners. Great to see so many smiling faces and cheering fans.

Brandon is the first player since the inception of the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies in 2011 to sign a Division 1 baseball scholarship.
Join me in congratulating him on all of his success. Thank you.

let us celebrate the incredible Black history of Pittsburgh residents. Today I want to uplift the life and legacy of August Wilson as the first Black man to have a Broadway Theatre named after him. 1/2
I am pleased to announce the addition of Morgan Overton to my administration. Morgan brings a decade of experience in public service and leadership to our team and her counsel will be invaluable. I am confident she will serve the residents of

Pittsburgh — join me in welcoming
@shakeshack
to the Terminal in the Strip District! I am so proud of our city and the work that we’re doing to attract nationally renowned businesses like this one.
Welcome to the Neighborhood!
At the beginning of this year, just weeks into my first term as Mayor of
@Pittsburgh
, the Fern Hollow Bridge collapsed.
Our entire city held their breath and prayed for the survivors, and by the grace of God not one single person lost their life that day.
Pittsburgh, please join me in prayer for the family and friends of Alex Yerkey, whose life was taken in a senseless act of gun violence. Alex was a kind, gentle, and thoughtful person who was passionate about making Pittsburgh a better place for everyone.
.
@Pittsburgh
bleeds black and gold, and no city would show up like our city would. Bringing the Draft to Pittsburgh is a no-brainer for the NFL, and we could use it as a platform to showcase all the great things our city has to offer.
Since the day I was sworn in as Mayor of the great city of Pittsburgh, I have made clear that my number one priority is making this the safest city in America.

Pittsburgh, our dedicated police, through collaboration with the ATF and PPS officers, were able to interrupt what could have been a major act of violence near one of our schools.

We know that Pittsburgh is NOT a most livable city for everyone, and we won’t pretend that it is.
We need action, not avoidance.
Pittsburgh needs a mayor who will stand up and fight for those who have been left behind.
The People of Pittsburgh are the ones who know best about what is happening in our great city.

If you live, work, or play in the City of Pittsburgh and have ideas, questions, or concerns about creating a DISABILITY-FRIENDLY CITY — please attend and make your voice heard!
Pittsburgh will ALWAYS be a union town. Today, and everyday, I march in solidarity with our city’s workers and renew my promise to fight for the rights they deserve.
On The Second Night of Hannukah, I joined Chabad of Western Pennsylvania to light the Chanukiah at the City County Building.
This Chanukiah is the same one from the 1989 Supreme Court Case, County of Allegheny v. American Civil Liberties Union, that allows for these displays. 🕎
I am dedicated to building a city that is safe, welcoming, and thriving for everyone who calls Pittsburgh home, and that means coming together to reject antisemitism and all forms of hate.
Thank you to every election official and poll worker. You are our defenders of democracy and our protectors of justice. CommUnity, when you go vote, thank a poll worker! 🗳
Pittsburgh is a majority renter city, and that is why programs like these are essential. Rental Registration is the first step to ensuring that all of our residents have access to housing that is healthy and safe.
Today
@PLIpgh
announced the implementation plan for the City of Pittsburgh’s Rental Registration program. The program will allow city officials to inspect and ensure that rental properties meet the minimum standards for safe living conditions. 1/3
Mayor Ed Gainey and the nonprofit Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership on Friday announced the six-month pilot project to provide the temporary public bathrooms.
Pittsburgh, today I am grateful for the safety of our children and thankful for the quick response from our Public Safety Bureaus, County Sheriffs, Port Authority & University Police, State Police, the ATF, and the FBI.
Right now, over one-third of all property in the City of Pittsburgh is tax-exempt — that means all of us who pay our taxes have to make up the difference.

It was incredible to see the CommUnity come together for
#Pride
today.
Thank you Pittsburgh, together we will build a city that empowers every single LGBTQIA+ person!
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
Today’s decision by the Supreme Court moves our country further away from being able to provide equal opportunity for all. Anytime we remove a tool, such as Affirmative Action, it makes it difficult for our children to get a great education.
I gotta start spending my mornings at Dilworth Traditional Academy over in East Liberty! They kick off every morning with a “Morning Meeting” full of singing, dancing, and affirmations.

CommUnity. The Allegheny County Covid-19 Transmission rate has changed to the medium level. Let’s mask up to protect each other. You can also order 8 rapid tests for free through the

“If you pass the test, the city is truly benefiting ... then your exemption has been earned," Gainey said. "However, if you fail to meet our constitutional standards, then we will make sure that you are paying your fair share to us.”
At last night’s meeting about traffic calming measures coming to Penn Ave. in the Strip, I was reminded of something important: Love is powerful. 200+ people showed up to show their love for the Strip District and those who use it.
EMS was born in
@Pittsburgh
in 1966 with the Freedom House Ambulance Service in the City’s ICONIC Hill District Neighborhood. 24 Black men from the historic Hill underwent medical training to become part of the ambulance team and this later expanded to both Black men AND women.
I hope that today’s sentencing decision in the synagogue shooting case marks a step forward toward healing for our community. I hope that we can use this decision to start a new chapter that uplifts and protects our city’s Jewish community.

Pittsburgh: our downtown is one of the best in the country and is leading the way in post-pandemic recovery.
We aren’t done - but this data is worth celebrating. Thanks to everyone who is working with us to reimagine the future of downtown.
We’re here in Shenley Park on Flagstaff Hill to show solidarity and make space for the AAPI community and victims of gun violence in the last week. This is our moment to show up, learn, & build a better Pittsburgh, together!
#PittsburghTogether
Pittsburgh, my prayers are with the Tree of Life, Dor Hadash, and New Light congregations and our City’s Jewish community today as jury selection begins for the deadly attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue almost five years ago.
CommUnity Good Morning 🌞
Today I want to recognize

This is what safe, welcoming, and thriving looks like. Thank you for coming out today to celebrate the diverse cultures that call Pittsburgh home, CommUnity.
Today we begin to take back the block in Homewood.
