At the
@bcdlab
we have spent a good chunk of the last few years working on innovating the methods of infant developmental science. Below is a thread of methods papers with contributing authors from our lab! /1
I am *VERY* happy to report that the
@uff_uf
bargaining team just agreed to a huge win for
@UF
faculty and staff! UF WILL HAVE A FULLY PAID PARENTAL & FAMILY/MEDICAL LEAVE BENEFIT. 1/10 thread
10 different proposals submitted to NIH over 15 years, many many hours of work and almost as many hours of refreshing era commons- NICHD just let me know that my R21 with
@UF_brainwaves
will be funded! Now we just need this Covid thing to end so we can do this:
Students can report instructors not in person via the gators safe app. 👀💩They added a button just for this purpose. I’m more than a little disturbed by this.
@UF
do better. We’ve been working our asses off for you through all of this.
Hello from sunny Florida! Florida academics are currently fighting on many fronts- we are writing op-eds & letters, attending rallies, protests & lots of meetings, filing lawsuits, organizing, tweeting, responding to admin requests & spending a lot of time being angry. 1/2
Here
@UFPsychology
is the largest major
@uf
, we brought in over 7 million in grant funding last year (2nd in
@UF_CLAS
), & we have the
#2
online program in the nation. We support diversity & women in science & our LGTBQ+ students. 🐊s deserve better. 1/2
Out today! “Giving parents the opportunity to support healthy infant development through paid parental leave programs that are accessible, flexible, & equitable, will positively impact early trajectories of brain & behavioral development.”

@NatalieHBrito
This paper was a labor of love! The nature of face processing and what babies come to the world ready to perceive and learn is something I’ve spent years debating (mostly in my own head) and thinking about. 🧵
I *love* Karen Adophs new article in TiCS! A must read for those interested in change processes, developmental cascades, inter- and intraindividual variability, the nature of learning and the role of the environment and sociocultural context.
Thank you
@UF
leadership. “Effective immediately…we expect everyone to wear a mask at all times when inside any UF facility, even if you are vaccinated. This includes our students, faculty, staff, vendors and visitors.”
I am soooo excited!!! I nominated a personal hero mine, Dr.
@lisascottbcd
, for the Association for Academic Women (AAW) Woman of Distinction Award and the AAW Membership selected her as the winner of the award :-) (1/n)
Review grants? Ever wonder about best practices for doing it well? This is the thread for you! Below I outline review strategies that I use and I hope that the reviewers of my grants also use. /begin thread
5yrold: I need to decide what I want to be when I grow up.
Me: ok, what do you like to do?
5yrold: I like to find things like jewels or treasures or flowers.
Me (excited) you could be a geologist or an archeologist or a biologist!
5yrold: Nevermind I’ll just be a fairy.
Well past time for someone in the
@uf
admin to step up and fight.
@BenSasse
as our new president this is now your fight. Support your faculty, students and staff. We are the reason UF is a top 5 public University, we deserve your support.
“If the professors wish to testify pro bono on their own time without using university resources, they are free to do so.”
If it is on their own time without using university resources than why shouldn’t they be paid for their time?
If you have MRI testing experience and are looking for a post-bac job or post-doc, please get in touch with me! Lots of opportunities to scan babies beginning this spring and early summer!
I think maybe there was a line missing at the end of that email? Maybe it got cut off? Here, I’ll fix it for you: “In recognition of all of your hard work& sacrifices the University will be implementing an across the board 5% raise to all faculty, staff, and graduate students.”
Who teaches the large classes where it is more likely that someone will anonymously report them? This will undoubtably perpetuate the already existing inequities. It reflects the admins lack of knowledge about what any of us have been doing these last 10 months.
So if your request does not have to do with fighting for our academic freedom, our jobs, our colleagues jobs, our students, or basic human rights- consider asking another time. 2/2
News! After a wonderful 13yrs at FSU & FCRR, I will be leaving to return to the land of the mighty beaver. In May I’ll be moving to Psychology at
@UWaterloo
.
I will be recruiting for a lab coordinator, postdocs (at least 2, 1 ASAP) & grad students for fall 2024. Get in touch!
This is for all the new faculty trying to figure it all out right now. Although I am by no means a health in the academic workplace expert, I have found some of the following to be useful in my attempts to maintain my own health. /THREAD
So happy
@UFHealth
is vaccinating all their faculty, staff & students. Maybe after your 2nd dose you could guest lecture for the mandated in-person sections that the rest of
@UF
has to teach, unvaccinated, in the spring? Let me know! I’m sure your expertise will fit somewhere.
The Psychology Department
@uf
is killing it these past months! Research, outreach and action! I’m proud to be a part of this group of amazing scientists working to make

My students go on to graduate school, medical school, or work as scientists in research labs. They take jobs in industry doing data science, statistics & medical device tech. They help people across sectors, they inform policies & they innovative in health.

Let’s talk about parental leave policies in academia. Parental leave is a gender equity in the workplace issue, a public health issue and a child development issue. We can change, we need to change. /thread
Does your group use Matlab or R? I created an online training spreadsheet for my lab with links to training. Matlab training is primarily focused on EEG/ERP/ssVEP. R is more general. Feel free to use this & add other online training (free) in the comments!
Although we may feel like we’ve been fighting for the past three years, the real fight starts now. Time for all of us to actively voice our opposition to HB 999. Make your voice heard.
Wake up: read the news. Check on fires, covid

, hurricanes. Ugh.
Make my daughters lunch.
7 yr old: mom why do you put peanut butter on both sides of the PB&J?
Me: to protect the bread from the devastating and potentially catastrophic impact of the jelly.
@SuzAdlof
Exactly, everything psych has been working so hard for- replicability, large well powered samples, pre registration, quality, reputable journals, longitudinal designs. This will decrease the quality and impact of the work we do.
Don’t let them intimidate you into changing the names of your courses/classes/committees. Language is important, it’s meaningful and it’s powerful. Get all requests to change DEI related language in writing. We will need them for the lawsuits.
"College officials objected to the words “diversity” and “inclusion." The organizer canceled the scheduled exhibit rather than comply with the university’s request to remove the words.
Florida Art Exhibit Canceled Over DEI Concerns
A big congratulations to Zoe Cheung for passing her dissertation defense! Zoe is the last of Jeff Farrar’s students to complete our program and he would have been so proud!
Very sad news. Jerry called me on my office phone out of the blue to talk about my dissertation findings that were recently published (in 2006). I don’t think anyone has ever done that since. It was a huge boost to my academic confidence and so fun to talk to him about my work.
Jerry Kagan passed away today at 92. he was entirely wonderful, deeply kind, generous w/ time & ideas. he mentored legions of us.
We last met in his Belmont kitchen in Feb 2020. He was razor-sharp as ever & happy to learn that Spotify has his favorite Glenn Miller records.
My take for faculty/staff at
@uf
given 💩leadership (sorry chairs/directors/deans who are fighting for us): take leave if you or your child is quarantined. DO NOT shift or adjust for them again. We do not need to deal with this. Take the leave. They will not be able to cover.
Yesterday I realized that the mantra we have been hearing from
@UF
admins that they are making decisions based on guidance from
@UFHealth
ONLY applies to the specific questions they are asking. They are NOT being asked about the safest way to teach./1
Me to Almost 7 year old: see this is why we don’t cut our own hair (pointing to the very short bangs she cut herself). We go to an expert.
Daughter: I am an expert. I’ve had this hair for years.
@KarlaHolmboe
This exactly. Plus my review period includes covid (1 pub in 2020) and a sabbatical to learn MRI in babies. I was purposefully not productive by these metrics because that’s what tenure allows you to do. To take risks in your work and expand your capacity to make an impact.
There’s been an update to the gator safe app & the problematic drop down menu has been removed & description edited. 👏👏 I’d still like the whole thing removed, but thank you to everyone who helped put pressure on the admin to make a change.
Is this correct? 142/540 UF students tested positive? Thats 26%. And students haven’t returned to campus yet. We should not be bringing students back to campus with these numbers. It’s irresponsible.
The GOP Florida legislature is now compiling a list of names and titles of university educators and staff who do work related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Ron DeSantis wants them rooted out of higher education.
That's how things are going in “free” Florida. 👇🏼
“And so we need to really start thinking about what does a sustainable academic environment with healthy faculty look like and how can we make space for that without thinking that we’re compromising rigor.”
Sabbatical is nice because I have a chance to get organized and get rid of some stuff. Here lies my undergraduate honors thesis. I can’t bring myself to toss it.
Work from the

Hmmmm. I don’t see an option for “instructor modified the class to in-person from virtual” I wonder why?
Also where do these reports go? What is the process for investigating a report? Is there a faculty & grad committee to review these claims?
Congratulations to the MBI members named 2024

Research Foundation Professors: Drs. Lisa Scott, Sara Jo Nixon, David Fuller, Daniel Ferris, Eduardo Candelario-Jalil and Stephen Anton.

And people wonder why faculty don’t want to teach face to face in the spring? Where is this mandate for face to face coming from? Everyone should be asking this question.

It’s not looking good… time to find incentives for vaccination and mandate masks at
@UF
. I applaud the efforts of
@UFHealth
@AlachuaSchools

@UF_CLAS
has options for moving clases online for the first 3 weeks. Time to step up and keep our community safe.
