The fact that MLB is abandoning oakland, one of the most vibrant culturally important and affluent cities in America for the complete banality and artifice of Las fucking Vegas is a joke
Ok here’s my guess.
1) Ippei racks up huge debt, is generally in deep shit
2) Ohtani offers to bail him out, sends the money to the bookie
3) They do the interviews
4) Someone figures out that this is all hella illegal
5) they backtrack and say Ippei stole the money
Spencer Bivens just won the World Series ... or appeared to based on his celebration/reaction after striking out Shohei Ohtani for the second time today
Tim Lincecum proved that there is nothing more powerful than an emo kid who plays baseball. Rob Manfred grow the game by making more emo kids play baseball.
It’s crazy how there’s been such a concerted effort to convince everyone that SF is a shithole and it’s like clearly not true? And yet everyone perpetuates it. Like it’s a bit dirty in places but the city is great.
Of course it’s also very possible Ippei is caught up as the fall guy. The whole thing is obviously very suspicious. I would say 80% chance it’s Ippei 20% chance it’s Ohtani/someone else close to this
The giants are increasingly being run like a soulless VC firm. Take this beloved thing and hollow it out. A lot of the individual decisions make sense, but when you’re pinching pennies with Renel you’ve completely lost the plot.

That’s Old Valyria! They used the dragons to make high quality steel etc until the Doom which I guess is their version of a mega Chernobyl

Oakland committed to significant investments in the area, as long as the A’s paid for the stadium itself. It is a business decision, but it’s just deeply disappointing. Stuff like this hurts all of sports bc it reminds us that the love we have for the game is not reciprocated
I’m not exactly sure why Kapler doing his thing online pisses so many people off, but I think it has something to do with jealousy/feelings of inadequacy among men.
Shohei Ohtani’s decision to earn just $2 million a year certainly is a great benefit to the Dodgers’ payroll, but also a stroke of genius for tax repercussions.
If he’s not living in California once his deferred payments start, he will not be subjected to heavy California tax.
@opinonhaver
Tuition money can be used in any way the university wants. TA’s are often paid for by government grants marked for education. So the university can use that to pay themselves for “tuition” and then the money can be used for whatever
While it sucks to see the owners canceling games, I’m glad the players are sticking by their guns. They’re standing up for the most vulnerable among them. The solidarity is inspiring.
BREAKING: MLBPA player leaders agreed unanimously not to accept MLB's final proposal, and there will be no deal on a new collective-bargaining agreement before MLB's 5 p.m. ET deadline, sources tell ESPN.
MLB has threatened to cancel its March 31 Opening Day without a new deal.

As a grad student in California it’s pretty wild to see grad school go from “you won’t have a ton of money but you’ll get by” to “6 year vow of enforced poverty and one bad month from homelessness”. Can’t be good for research or teaching outcomes really
@AgentRachelLuba
Scalia was a bigot who fought against equal rights for women and LGBT people. Regardless of his personal kindness I don’t think the problem we have is that people are too mean to bigots. We should be less accommodating of people like scalia even if we like them personally

The giants over performing pretty much every projection by 30+ games seems more surprising than the Mariners being lucky/good enough in close games to be close to the last playoff spot. The giants are actually way better than we thought they would be by prettt much any metric

We need to return to an understanding of art where it’s something rich people blow incredible amounts of money on, not something to make money
The giants are, for some reason, not using their most abundant local San Francisco resource, idiot tech billionaires. We need them to step up, buy the team bc they’re bored and lay waste to mlb. Do it cowards
@RottenInDenmark
This kind of elite punditry relies on a lack of ideology or real politics. In their world it has to rely on optics/charisma because that’s what they have access to. Substance is anathema to them
I’m not usually a big believer in hitting or pitching coaches to really change that much as the ML level, but Bailey really changed my mind. The giants bullpen especially has been super impressive relative to previous performance. Super sad to see him go
I have foreseen the end of giants season. They are going to crash and burn on this road trip to fall out of the wild card standings, then catch fire for a week to put themselves back in the conversation then have a disappointing up and down end of the year
New baseball rule, bullpen pitchers have to ride a bull into the game. Can’t stay on the bull long enough to get to the mound? Can’t get in the game sorry

Seizing is not doing heavy lifting. Invading forts to take possession of them is seizing them regardless of if there is resistance. And it doesn’t matter if Ft Sumter was supplied for weeks. They attacked it. Don’t know why you’re trying to imply the confederates were peaceful
