🚨 Entirely professional news klaxon 🚨 Friday was my last day on the culture team at
@Independent
after nearly four years! Mad! I'm heading to Bauer Media to write across a few of their pubs (Grazia, Heat, Closer), and have made a shiny new website
New G*rvais special is out, meaning the 2019 James Acaster routine calling him out is trending (again). Last year, I asked James about this clip repeatedly going viral, and think his response is still worth reading
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, a film that truly shaped me as a teen, turns 15 this year. Obviously I had to track down the cast (Georgia Groome, Eleanor Tomlinson, Kimberley Nixon, Georgia Henshaw) and Gurinder Chadha for a 4000+ word oral history
Been thinking a lot about that Olly Murs song which included the line ‘remember when that crab came up and pinched your feet’ and rhymed ‘free’ with ‘bacardi breeze’. 2010 was fucking wild.
I've wanted to write about Britannia High, ITV's musical drama (Glee before Glee was Glee) for years. For its 15th birthday, I tracked down the stars, and stumbled upon a whole load of drama about cast swaps, script changes, and the show it could have been
Every time the 'Meghan Markle Family Feud' headlines re-surface and Meghan's father and siblings lash out at her in the press, I think about this incredible piece by
@salihughes
on severing ties with toxic family members:
I wrote about How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, Any Dream Will Do, I’d Do Anything and Over the Rainbow, the enduring theatre careers of their former contestants and what it’s really like to give Andrew Lloyd Webber your shoes on live TV
Easy A is my favourite film of all time, so it was a dream come true to rant about its place in the teen movie canon and talk to actual Patricia Clarkson (!!!!!!) about what makes it so special on its 10 year anniversary:
Absolute dream come true getting to talk scarecrow competitions and learning to say goodbye with my hometown heroes Daisy May and

Compiled my picks for the shows to look out for at
@VAULTFestival
, which kicks off this week!! Can't wait to see what else this year's fest has to offer
We all knew this was coming... I wrote about crying on the bus to school, writing Louis Tomlinson poetry for his birthday (yes, really) and my hormone-driven years as a One Direction fan. Spoiler: they were actually pretty fun!
Remember when Lily Allen released Not Fair, a song that rhymed ‘I lie here in the wet patch in the middle of the bed’ with ‘I spent ages giving head’ and whenever they played it on Radio 1 they just edited a jaunty violin tune over that line. Truly the golden age of music
watching florence pugh cook marmalade and ratatouille on her instagram story is so soothing until you remember that z*ch br*ff is lurking somewhere in that house
After a really demoralising ‘why do I even bother’ week of job applications and pitching, hearing the amazing
@poornabell
speak this evening on making a journalism career work and not comparing yourself to other people has totally changed my mindset ✨
Got my first ever commission writing about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and finally got to interview THEE incredible Rachel Bloom for
@Independent
(I will never get over this)
Happy
#DragRaceUK
day! I spoke to *deep breath* all 12 queens competing on series 3 about their time on the show, dealing with trolls and what it’s really like trying to prepare for Drag Race in the middle of a pandemic (spoiler: quite hard)
Suuuuuper excited to launch Viral Laughter, my new series for

about the comedians who’ve distracted us from the constant feeling of impending doom during lockdown! Kicking it off with the always hilarious
@WillDHislop
All this from a brand that sell slogan t shirts reading ‘Feminist’, ‘Females of the Future’ and ‘Nothing Stronger Than Girl Power’. You don’t get to strip all meaning from feminism and then lash out when people talk about what it really means. Shame on you
@Topshop
#pinknotgreen
For anyone hoping to visit the pop-up, after a huge amount of work on this ground-breaking partnership we assembled our stand this morning and were raring to go – however, just twenty minutes later it had been dismantled by Topshop.
after years of denial, she’s finally got glasses! mildly traumatised by taking them off and realising just how bad my eyesight is for the first time, but who cares!!!! they’re pink!!!
Music and Lyrics is 15 (horrifying!) tomorrow, so I wrote about the bop that is 'PoP Goes My Heart!', the soundtrack's position within the fake-pop-songs-you-wish-were-real canon and how we wouldn't have half of them without the late great Adam Schlesinger
A lot has been written about Mock the Week ending, but what does it mean for the next generation of emerging comedians? I spoke to some of its biggest success stories about the show's position as a 'baby comedian academy' and what comes next post-Mock
@harrisonjbrock
every season I’m shocked they still do the tic tac lunch joke!! when they’ve generally been fairly good at phasing out other outdated bits I don’t get how this has survived
I have never had such a strong physical reaction to a TV show as I had watching I May Destroy You. It is singular, phenomenal and Michaela Coel shows once again why she is the voice of a generation. My 5 🌟 review for
@TheIndyTV
[TW: sexual assault, rape]
Returned to the theatre last night for one of the best comedy shows I've ever seen – not a bad way to start 2022!! My review of Liz Kingsman's astonishing One Woman Show
I spoke to the incredible Zoë Wanamaker about theatre's return, her new Netflix show and the UK's general underappreciation of the arts. Safe to say, it was a joy
Easy A (greatest teen movie of the 2010s?) was a true gift when it came to Penn Badgley. None of that John Tucker Must Die long hair, just proof that the man can make blue body paint and a woodchuck costume look good
Something pretty different from me for
@StylistMagazine
:
I only ate from food waste apps for a week because there's nothing I love more than good food and an even better deal:
2019 has been really tough personally (honestly can’t wait to yeet it out of sight) but has been the year I officially started writing for a living which is something I’m so grateful for on even the worst days. To hop on the bandwagon, here are my fave writing bits of the year:
the worst habit i’ve developed during lockdown is mixing whatever leftover spirits i can find around the house with instant coffee and calling it an espresso martini
Not to say that I have a Strong Brand™️ but
@virginiaasaul
embroidered the lyrics to the best fake pop song of all time (fight me) onto a shirt for me and I’ve honestly never loved anything more
@Nicole_Cliffe
Someone used it on Drag Race the other week and I was so shocked! Looked online to see if everyone else was rightly horrified but it was literally just one other Brit not realising that it's not considered a slur in the US
This is my last feature of the year and she’s a big ‘un… I spoke to the creators of Bridgerton, The Favourite, The Great and Emma about modernising the period drama and what the genre can teach us about the past and the present
Very sad to hear that Megan and Wes from Love Island have gone their separate ways but really pleased with this bit of their official break up statement
My mum broke the news that she was pregnant with my brother to one year old me by giving me a baby doll so we could ‘be mummies together’ and I just threw it down the stairs in disgust
Happy Casa Amor day! I'm weirdly fascinated by the contestants who join the Love Island villa for three days, fail to couple up, then have to return to normality, so spoke to some of the show's shortest lived islanders about their experiences
I feel like there’s a really fucking important element being missed out from this Arrested Development conversation: how DARE they ask Jessica Walter about the abuse she suffered whilst doing a group interview WITH HER ABUSER. How do you even expect her to respond to that??
Fleabag is brilliant (obviously) but selling individual tickets for it that cost £120 is an absolute joke. You can barely convince me that there are 3 hour long, 50 person cast musicals that are worth that money, let alone an hour long one woman show
#soz
Fuck me, I knew It’s a Sin would be an emotional watch but I just feel totally floored by the whole thing. It reminds me of I May Destroy You in that the highs are so euphoric it feels like a punch in the stomach when it drops. Phenomenal TV but my god I can’t stop crying
✨5 stars in The Independent! Felt actually quite emotional reading this one because it means a lot to me to have had a female critic from the broadsheets in too. Given the content of the show and the concept of balance. So thanks Isobel! This has made my day
Last week my hometown was referred to as ‘hippie central’ in the Daily Mail and today I was given this business card while waiting for a train. Pure poetry

I promise that normal Twitter service will resume in approximately 24 hours but I'm a baby journalist and big writing gigs are exciting and I can't pretend to be cool about it!!!! I'm so happy I could cry!!!!
The most important skill to master when working from home is how to balance your laptop and an overly full bowl of ramen when you inevitably decide to work from bed. Once you've figured this out, you can do anything.
