Beautiful abandoned miners' cottages in a disused slate quarry in Snowdonia, North Wales. The quarry closed in 1969 due to industry decline and because 170-years of working the site resulted in waste tips sliding into the main pit workings.

William Neilson Hall, who earned a V.C. at the Siege of Lucknow was the son of former slaves from Maryland in the USA. He was the first Black, the first Nova Scotian and the first Canadian naval recipient of the Victoria Cross.

The stunning tomb of Jules #Verne (1828-1905) can be found in the Cimetière de la Madeleine in #Amiens , #France . Sculptor Albert Roze used Verne's death mask to make the sculpture, which depicts the author breaking free of his tomb and reaching for the sky.

#Coronation Park in #Delhi is a graveyard for the statuary of the #Raj . These #statues statues were removed after #Partition in 1947. A reminder that statues remain only with the consent of communities. In 2018, the park was popular only with amorous couples. #colstonstatue

In 1974, #Ramesses II was sent on a flight to #Paris for preservation and maintenance work. But since French law required every person, living or dead to fly with a valid passport, #Egypt was forced to issue a passport to the #Pharaoh , 3,000 years after his death.

A Mosul Romance: Mohamed Ali, a Muslim from central India, served with the Supply and Transport Corps in Iraq 1915-1920. Near Mosul he met and married his wife, a Chaldean Catholic from a small Assyrian village. They had three sons and two daughters. via @jalilancs #WW1 #WWI

1/3 My #museumbuddy @PoloDas & I are looking at how soldiers have been represented in the #UK & #India . In March 1918, Britain was short of 450K men! The shortfall was to be made up by Indian sepoys. Propaganda posters were produced and a major recruiting campaign began.
