Logging in to any MSFT system is a true stress test of http, dns, and tcp/ip. The number of redirects is staggering. It's a wonder that it works at all.
👋 A few things I wanted to convey as a small addendum to the “GitHub’s Engineering team has moved to Codespaces” blog yesterday. Hopefully what follows below provides a bit more context / answers some common questions I’ve seen...
One thing I always enjoy
@github
(amongst many other things) is the use of handles instead of names. Always really striking during an incident when the mood is serious:
"Has anyone asked goatsinthemachine if the read replica has caught up yet?"
Today is my last day
@retool
.
I've had a great time building good software with good people.
Retool is far and away the best player in this category. It's always strange when I see a quadrant with one of the legacy players in the top right hand corner; whatever advantage they
👀Copilot is incredible. If you’ve used it, you know the deal. We’re well past novel and well into game-changing. And it’s still early days.
Also incredible: Copilot is hiring eng leaders for Foundations, IDE, and Model Improvement teams. See🧵for open roles...
One thing I really, really miss about
@github
is the daily use of handles.
What's goatsinthemachine up to?
Can you get dinnermonster on the zoom?
p0 as in priority or p0 as in Pavel?
Today's my second day
@replicate
; I was a little too excited to tweet about things over the course of the first day.
Replicate feels familiar to me already — so much of the "getting to know you" process felt like I was catching up with old friends & colleagues.
There's a real
If you have small children (I have two under 5) and manage to 1) not be extremely exhausted always and 2) stay up after you've put them down to get some things done and/or enjoy kid free time — tell me how. Need every tip.
Had my first ‘ok my heart lives outside of my body now’ parenting moment.
Took littlest to ER Sunday night for extremely labored breathing and so thankful we did — it was indeed an emergency.
48 hours later he’s on the mend and we’ve learned our pandemic baby is an asthmatic.
Fun to watch the momentum from
@planetscaledata
— this happens when you have good taste, good people, and you’re your own customer.
It does not happen when 12 people with big titles need to get aligned before anyone does anything.

Every Ex-Googler will introduce Bazel at their new gig, every Ex-Facebooker will introduce Facebook Workplace. People who didn’t work in either of those companies know of those tools only because they worked with an Ex-Googler/Facebooker.
Cleaning standard since having kids:
* House is sanctuary
* Ok they have stuff, I’ll control it
* Ok it can be in this single room only
* Ok two rooms
* Ok every room
* Too tired to move legos from shower
* Fine have oatmeal in your bed and mine
* Grey Gardens
For the longest time I thought all these product designers shitting on chat-based interfaces were wrong.
My mental model was "chat is basically language which is the most human interface" and now after having worked with models for quite some time I'm happy to admit you all are
This week we landed support for Codespaces in the
@github
CLI but “Codespaces support in the GitHub CLI” doesn’t really communicate the impact. Here’s why I think it’s a really great moment for Codespaces.
The
@github
shop on the second floor was the greatest thing ever.
It was lawless and should have stayed lawless — we could've kept it afloat until it was Microsoft's problem.
@isamlambert
I remember like my second week at GitHub I asked you to draw an architecture diagram.
You drew a box with a line to a database. You wrote Rails on the box. You wrote MySQL on the database.
You said ‘that’s about it.’
The day we left sf — I’m gross after a morning of cleaning and packing and loading a truck. I’ve missed sf ever since 💔.
But mostly I just love how cute and tiny Willow is in this photo.
GitLab’s only marketing strategy was to show up in any GitHub moment.
Going so far as to bring an ice cream truck to Universe. Lame.
Make your own moment.
While I was in charge of comms at HashiCorp, I had a rule that when a competitor (even the rude ones) had a big announcement, no one at HC could talk about us. Let them have their moment, their day. Don't use it as an opportunity to advertise alternatives, its a bad look.
i.e. a
I used to joke about driving my 2001 Honda Civic down Sandhill Road in Palo Alto and what a “silicon valley success story” that was.
I still drive the car but now my new standard of success is wearing a hoodie with baby milk puke on it to the finest dining I can find.
Codespaces is always 🤯for me. This morning I browsed to an internal
@github
repo I'm only passingly familiar with — clicked a button, ran a single command from the README, and I'm up and running/making changes.
Funemployment update: I find myself at 630am writing a multipage strategy doc + tactical plan on getting our 2yo and 5yo to go to bed (at least somewhat) independently.
Name things what they are. Beyond a team of ten-ish clever service names fall apart.
And good luck to the new engineer who has to figure out that some deep LOTR fanfic reference is really just the job queue.
Hey there! I'm hiring an eng leader in our "Bootstrap" team
@retool
, should be a ton of fun.
Bootstrap is a portfolio team w/ some real range. The work could be tactical or strategic/wayfinding. It might also be greenfield or incremental. In every case, it's impactful. 👇
airbnb checkout has been ever-escalating to ridiculous.
soon it's going to be: $700 cleaning fee but leave house spotless, mow yard, build new east wing, purchase glassware for family of eight (overnight shipping.)
My 2yo, 5yo, spouse all joined the Covid Crew. Rough few weeks in the household — including a quick trip to the ER — but we're on the other side 🥳
Built an addiction to at-home testing. Spent way too much money just to watch my climb out of covid pit. Worth it.
My toddler’s talking school bus decided to randomly go off at 2am.
We just moved into a new house and don’t have furniture/rugs - the emptiness amplifies any sound.
Terrifying to hear ghost children laughing as they ‘get on the bus.’ Do not want.
Anyone know a producer on the
@TheEllenShow
?
My sister just sent me a video of my niece after wisdom teeth removal — high as a kite and supremely disappointed (sobbing) that Ellen wasn’t there to support her in her time of need.
@theomn
@dan_abramov
One thing that has helped me in the past is to blog for myself and not share it publicly. I get tons of value out of taking the time to gather coherent thoughts for an audience of one.
For now I have a little corner of the house that’s all mine. In the winter months it turns into a cozy space. Probably 20 sq ft but my books, gear, music, ephemera, etc. I love it.
Feels like I need to load up Zork.
Me one year into my firstborn’s life: can we keep this area of the 🏠 tidy please?
Me one year into second born’s life: did willow want to keep this rotting, moss-covered log in the living room or her bedroom?
💪 Finally, I’ll say that it took a decent amount of work to replatform to a Linux-based environment but it wasn’t anything magical. Mostly just determination to see it through. Y’all can absolutely do this, too. Cheers!
Bought my toddler a cheap record player because she’s obsessed with ours.
Last I checked she was outside grinding some vinyl against a pile of rock and sand.
⌨️ This is covered in the post but I think it’s important to cover again: we’ve shipped some work internally to support Vim and Emacs users. You can do the same! We’d be happy to share how we did this — support will be first-class in Codespaces soon.
