I finished the second volume of Beauvoir's autobiography, wrote about it pretty much immediately. I wrote about my own anxious-optimistic disposition, and how Beauvoir's battle with optimism spoke to this tendency of mine. Link is in my bio if that sounds interesting to you!

@Hbomberguy This idea of "be friends with people with different political views" is definitely grounded in privilege, like if the fascist doesn't want *you* dead then apparently it's fine. And even if they're a conservative, there's a big chance they wont accept lgbt people properly

@christapeterso This vagueness (which imo applies to adult criteria too) means assessments basically take the form of a weird debate. You tell them you want to transition, then the assessor ask you to consider that it could be that you're mentally ill/have a fetish, and you say 'no', then repeat

@sjwdebates I think we can maintain that 1. people > property, 2. that property is important for working-class people (and should be compensated for damage) 3. that riots have specific causes that need to be addressed in ways that aren't shooting rioters. with no contradiction

@nrduford I think a lot of cis people assume being a good ally is about using the right words, without changing the way they're seeing trans people. And this creates all this anxiety, bc of course it won't come naturally if you think the pronouns you're saying aren't really the right ones!

@Helenreflects in Beauvoir's second memoir (and relatedly in her first novel), Beauvoir describes illness as in some ways transformative, in that it made her realise that she is not an exception to the world, that anything that might happen to others could happen to her too.

writing about intimacy, and I'm struggling bc referring to 'a lover' feels so antiquated and also too strong, but 'romantic/sexual partner or interest' is too cold and analytical. I want the drama (brevity) of 'lover' without it sounding like I'm 100 years old...

@FeyeraBender I think there are things, like fascism for instance, where something's "own terms" are so inconsistent that it would obscure, rather than clarify it for criticism. It feels like understanding fascism on its "own terms" would like, be mistaken in its method from the outset
