There is a lot of work ahead for the City Council to build back the trust of Angelenos — but the unwillingness of Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo to resign is a slap in the face to residents who deserve to move on from this shameful and abhorrent moment.

LA is one of the most segregated cities in America in part because affordable housing projects are concentrated in low-resource, high poverty neighborhoods. Today, my motion to prioritize 100% affordable housing projects in high-resource areas was passed in Council.

Only 14% of affordable housing units permitted in the last decade were located within high-resource neighborhoods — effectively excluding low-income households from neighborhoods with the greatest access to public parks, transit, schools, grocery stores, and health facilities.

Yesterday, we took a massive step towards the shared vision of a cleaner, sustainable LA, and I couldn’t be more grateful to all who joined me for this meaningful moment.

We have a huge shortage of bus shelters here in the City of Los Angeles – and in a city that gets this hot, that is outrageous. We cannot ask people to take public transit in order to meet our climate goals unless they can expect to be safe and comfortable.

I share the deep concerns of many about the Times Mirror Square project -- both its dubious connection to disgraced former CM Jose Huizar and its lack of affordability. But it’s a product of a system that produces bad outcomes. Let's fix that system.

Another hurdle has been a surprisingly high rate of frontline healthcare workers opting out. Between 20-40% of eligible healthcare workers in LA have declined the vaccine, sending even more places scrambling to distribute their unused doses.

If you live in a rent-stabilized unit in LA city, your rent cannot be increased until February 1st, 2024. Rent stabilization applies to any multifamily building in LA built before 1979. That’s about 60% of units in the city.

My team and I were already considering Crystal Springs Drive as part of a series of safety improvements across the district to prevent tragedies like this from occurring, and we will continue that work with greater urgency. There is no time to waste.

There’s been a lot of confusion in CA as well. Gov Newsom announced Wednesday that those over 65 were now eligible for the vaccine. Older Angelenos raced to grab slots -- until the County indicated it did not have enough vaccines to expand eligibility.

Here in LA, we are in the thick of the redistricting process -- an event that will shape not only Council Districts, but the nature of our city for years to come. So, how does this affect you? Well, come January, you could live in an entirely new Council District.

On Monday, LA County took steps to pick up the pace of vaccinations by expanding eligibility to include *all healthcare workers.* The city also announced that the Dodger Stadium testing site would be repurposed to start delivering vaccines 7 days a week.

Today, in partnership with @CurrenDPriceJr , and with support from @InclusivAction , we’re intro’ing a motion on behalf of LA’s street vendors. It reestablishes the moratorium on enforcement of unpermitted vendors, allowing time for a just permitting system to be established.

One thing I’m very excited about in @MayorofLA ’s budget: A multidisciplinary street medicine team dedicated to CD4. LA doesn’t directly provide health care -- it’s the purview of the County. And mental health care in particular is a major gap in our current system. (thread)

One thing our team did over the long weekend: renter outreach! We’ve been going door-to-door to inform renters about their rights and protections now, and when the eviction moratorium officially sunsets on Jan 31.

For instance, many of LA’s skilled nursing facilities reported having extra doses. One solution would have been to share with assisted living facilities, where residents are often nearly as sick -- but they hadn’t yet been authorized to get the vaccine.

Today the Economic Development and Jobs committee is considering a report related to the creation of a public bank in LA. What exactly is a public bank, and why would it be a big step towards a more just Los Angeles? (thread)

My mom has always insisted that the perfect chapati be cooked over a flame. Getting rid of her gas stove has never been an option – until now. Today’s induction stove tops heat up quicker and distribute heat more evenly, leading to better results and more flavorful dishes.

LA spends *$4.5 billion annually* on contracted goods and services — how we spend that should reflect our most ambitious social, environmental, and equity goals. Today, City Council took a major step towards that by adopting my motion for an Office of Procurement.
