@JoyceCarolOates I’m 61. Been following Joe closely since before 1991, didn’t like him back then. But he has grown into a man who reminds me of my own grandfather, in the best possible way. I don’t know if “decent grandpa” is the formula to beat “farting Hitler,” but I hope so.

@shesbonky Sit down with the parents. Ask them, do you really think that about us? How are we supposed to be friends with you, if you think we are going to hell? I had evangelical friends in college get their eyes opened, this way. It’s harder to say a friend is hellbound.

(Men on the moon had happened when I was such a little kid that by the time I was a teenager, moonwalks were one with all the rest of unremembered history.) Now I’m 61, and I find this feat amazing.

@Purify_toast17 I’m 60. My father was 28 when I was born. His father, born in 1897, was 37 when my father was born. So, reasonably normal generation spans, and I’m not THAT old. My grandfather’s nurse had been enslaved in my great-grandmother’s family. It’s not the distant past.

@TheBrianHopkins Oh, you are absolutely correct. He switched from being a Dem-voting union man, to shilling for big corporate ad $, then parlayed that into some rah-rah jingoism, then into politics, where he rode the Civil Rights backwash and expanded it to northern Catholics (Reagan Democrats).

@TWreninator @AlinejadMasih They don’t wear these slave masks inside their prisons, oops I mean houses, but that doesn’t make it right. What the kids do see is their mothers erased as people in public, and often at home, too (for example if male friends of their husbands or sons come over.) Child abuse.

@ToriGlass There’s no “free” market, especially not for housing. Safety regulations price construction out of some people’s reach, and zoning laws do the rest. One of my areas, as a lawyer, is NJ housing law.

@KellyScaletta Hillary was better. Basically perfect. People forget. Harris has done fine, and the contrast with Trump is more pronounced because he is much worse, eight years later.

@michaelharriot Hi, sorry, there may be more to this convo I’m not seeing, but the writers finally changed it up and had the grownups see Snuffy, because they came to fear that kids recounting sex abuse and not being believed was too close to this old running gag. Real life intruding.

@whstancil God, you are pompous. Commenters posted a far clearer graph of your “spike.” We also pointed out it’s an integral, not a derivative. I’ll now note, by your own graph, that as of “fall of last year” and through summer of this year, rents were still rising. Give it up.

@SenatorRomney Let me guess: further lower taxes on the rich, axe discretionary spending on the poor, raid Social Security, etc. Seen it all before, Mitch.

@BillKristol This is the old “Johnny Unbeatable” ruse. People see flaws they dislike, in the real humans before them. When asked if they prefer a hypothetical or less-known person, they tend to say yes. Pollsters know and exploit this.

@oldenoughtosay In the 1960s and early 1970s, my uncle was a salesman for Ortho (birth control). Many years later, I found a pamphlet of his, that my mother had saved. It had the most beautiful, 3D hand painted illustrations of living ovaries, with the gently waving, searching fronds of /1

@michelle_byoung Yes, I’ve had this pressure to be “friendly,” to “hug” a stranger. When I was very young, I did. I didn’t know what else to do. They put you in a position to be “rude.” Ladies, fuck that. Be super rude. Easy to say, hard to do.

@CrimeGirI First conference with daughter’s kindergarten teacher, she said I’d probably be interested to know that apparently I am busy sewing her the most beautiful Princess dress ever, with blue sequins all over and a looong blue train and would I like to see a picture of said dress?

@D_Ministar @historyinmemes Here’s an excellent, long article about Paul, a few years ago. What a man! And, he did manage to be outside the lung, when he was younger and had worked to master throat breathing, which however is very effortful. @gdnlongread
