*Looks at Suella Braverman*: “This is punk.”
*Listens to Ben Shapiro*: “This is punk.”
*Watches suburban parents scream about pronouns at a school board meeting*: “This is punk.”
There was wall-to-wall coverage, angst, and hand-wringing when Hillary called some people “deplorables.”
But since launching this campaign alone, Trump has called people “vermin,” “poison,” and “human scum,” just to name some highlights
I get that American troops fought and died to defend our freedoms, including freedom of speech (for which we should all be profoundly grateful), but I still think this isn’t what they had in mind.
And I don’t get why anyone wouldn’t be appalled by this.
Chris Jones probably ran the best statewide campaign a Democrat has run here since Beebe. Ultimately, Arkansas just isn't a state where Democrats can win these kinds of offices.
@jbouie
From a lifelong progressive southerner: thank you, Jamelle. It genuinely sucks to spend time fighting the fights we do down here (where there are lots of progressives and religious and racial minorities!) only to get these sort of “of course the South is bad” takes from on high.
My governor has spent her whole term avoiding tough interviews and calling her critics here “far left” and “radicals” who want to destroy her and the country.
So I don’t take her thoughts on this very seriously.
@janecoaston
Aside from brushing off the Depression, I like the casual assumption that he’d fight in the BOTH of the two bloodiest wars in human history and live.
I couldn’t agree more. My 86 year-old Southern born and bred has never displayed this symbol and would never display it. She knows what it means. We all know what it means.
This

interview with Dean Phillips, and especially *this* part, drive home the point
@SarahLongwell25
and
@Timodc
have also made: the only wedge Phillips has is Biden’s age.
His whole campaign rests on hammering a key GOP talking point. It’s incredibly reckless.
Dean Phillips also told me that Biden is "perhaps the only Democrat who could lose to Trump."
That's just absurd, for the reasons outlined below. But when I pressed Phillips, he dug in. Very hard to see why he's going here. 5/5
@SequoiaN
@TheLincoln
I find it really upsetting when two people who are still in their underwear lay side by side with the covers partially pulled up and breathe a little bit faster.
Personally, I think my governor should denounce these remarks made by her father, a former governor of the same state, in defense of her former boss’s attempt to overthrow American democracy.
Mike Huckabee warns that if Trump's legal problems prevent him from winning in 2024, "it is going to be the last American election that will be decided by ballots rather than bullets."
I’m sick and tired of a president who cares so little about right-wing terrorism that, on the very day of the synagogue shooting, he proceeded with a campaign rally, telling his supporters, “Let’s have a good time.” My latest in

Trump and Mike Johnson are killing the House vote on the border deal because (1) they know it would pass; and (2) this would wreck their strategy of claiming Biden alone owns what happens at the border.
To MAGA, that's an unacceptable outcome. 1/

I wrote a whole thing
@BulwarkOnline
about how one of the worst aspects of red state/blue state politics is the idea that certain places are only for certain people.
I love Arkansas, too, and I’m staying.
If you aren’t familiar with this kind of thinking, these sort of insights might shock you. But I grew up surrounded by fundamentalist evangelicalism, and this view of the world is widespread. Now it’s thoroughly part of the wider political ecosystem.
I also appreciated
@ruthbenghiat
’s observations about how Orbán’s Hungary has rendered trans and non-binary people “non-persons” bureaucratically.
I’ve written on this as well, but in my home state of Arkansas
@jmhorp
So obscuring that Australia uses ranked choice voting and not showing the two-party preference is pretty misleading. And comparing the Westminster system to the Electoral College in terms of being an indirect way to elect an executive is also pretty misleading. Is that your goal?
“is it really a leap to suggest that Trump is broadcasting the idea that liberals should feel threatened en masse by a second Trump term?”
@GregTSargent
with a vital piece directly confronting Trump’s lurid, violent attacks on his fellow Americans
Obviously Sanders has the right to defend herself, but it would be nice if the biggest and richest paper in Arkansas was doing more to hold the state’s governor accountable.
Instead, it’s independent writers and smaller media outlets doing the heavy lifting.
@kasie
Kasie, if you’re going to use my quote, pls use the entire quote (don’t selectively omit the last two words):
Q: “Is what we saw at the White House last night an abuse of power?”
A: “By the protestors, yes: THE VIOLENCE.”
@RadioFreeTom
This kind of move from Stefanik really does reinforce the whole there’s no good GOP left argument. If this is what the party’s once-moderate rising star is saying, it’s done folks. Party’s over—literally.
My mom tested positive today for COVID. She’s a fit woman but over 60 and has been a type 1 diabetic since childhood.
Her symptoms are mild, but it is absolutely insane how miserably
@AsaHutchinson
and the rest of Arkansas’s leadership has failed us. Total, abject failure.
This is a softball question that a normal person would just answer with “my family” or “chocolate cake” or “when my sports team wins”
Instead, Vance just turns into another attack on “the media”
Just in case you think I’m being overstated in my constant comparisons of the Republicans to the European far right, Hungarians voted in a referendum today with strong parallels to the anti-lgbt legislation happening in places like Florida and Idaho.
What period in US history was more materially affluent than the present? Give me dates and at least a couple numbers to support your claim, rather than vaguely gesturing at the cultural memory of mid-century suburban affluence or whatever.
@LarrySabato
I’m not sure it’s even limited to Trump. If this iteration of the GOP were to gain unified control in, say, 2024, I’d be very skeptical that we wouldn’t see serious democratic backsliding
In my new piece for

@Timodc
’s Why We Did It is incredible. Scorching. Unsparing, especially with himself. Possibly the best book around on the Trump takeover of the GOP.
It’s an absolute tour-de-force in the kind of self-reflection that’s almost non-existent in professional politics.
Tom Cotton says that we in Arkansas would simply assault protesters blocking a bridge. He makes it sound like this is just salt-of-the-earth common sense. It’s not.
My piece at
@LiberalCurrents
This analysis is spot on. Far too many talk about Trump’s disparagement and abandonment of our allies like it’s a function of his impulsiveness and ignorance.
But it’s actually part of his international vision, which is pro-strongman and actively against the post-WW2 order.
This short description of the disastrous consequences that could unfold if MAGA Republicans succeed in blocking aid to Ukraine is profoundly disturbing. Rep Jason Crow really nails the bigger stakes here. It's from our pod discussion. Please watch:
“The anti-woke right is increasingly wielding heavy-handed tactics — including state power and violent threats — to block corporations from making their own decisions about how to adapt to social change.”
@ThePlumLineGS
sums it up well here
She’s utterly unqualified and unfit and will absolutely be running on two things that are automatic big nopes from me: her time in the Trump admin and the Huckabee name.
Arkansas is better than anything she has to offer. And we deserve so much more in a governor.
NEWS: Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former press secretary for President Trump, will announce tomorrow that she’s running for governor of Arkansas. She’s seen as leader in the polls and the president’s preferred candidate in a GOP state. Expect video announcement of her bid. Yeah but I
This

piece needs to be shared as far and wide as possible. It’s a detailed, to-the-point look at what is coming in a Trump White House 2.0

A lot to enjoy in today’s
@GregTSargent
column at
@newrepublic
. A great examination of the downward spiral of Republicans’ defenses of Trump’s degeneracy, including this excellent kicker.
@NGrossman81
People are rightly mentioning the treatment of Obama and swift boating of Kerry. But Republicans also insinuated that the Clintons murdered their friend who committed suicide. It’s just insane.
Here's another reason Democrats can't trust Kevin McCarthy: Incredibly, he's demanding that Dems support the far right GOP border agenda as part of the next package of aid for Ukraine.
I'm not sure people appreciate how extreme this demand truly is. 1/
Everyone needs to listen to
@GregTSargent
’s pod on Trump calling for Liz Cheney to be tried for treason.
In light of the immunity decision, this is a terrifying situation
Trump calling for Liz Cheney to be tried for "treason"—defined as "told the truth about Trump in public"—should be seen in light of SCOTUS ruling he'd be immune from ordering DOJ to do blatantly corrupt actions like that.
Unsettling pod from
@GregTSargent
.
I think this is important. Harris was absolutely a qualified VP pick and is a qualified candidate for the presidency. But there’s nothing inherently wrong with celebrating what her selection for VP meant and what her election to the White House would mean for our society
My wife is from Texas, and a lot of her extended family lives across the state.
It’s long been an elusive state for Dems, but I’m excited to see someone like Allred poised to take on Ted Cruz. People should listen to this conversation, especially Texans!
Colin Allred tells me he'll make a big pitch to rural voters in taking on Ted Cruz:
*GOP blocked Medicaid expansion
*Rural hospitals in trouble
*Teacher shortages at rural schools
*Cruz helped Trump on 1/6 (rare for Ds to say this in red areas!)

@BeijingPalmer
Absolutely. The extent to which even pretty banal interactions on here involve someone issuing some sort of sweeping statement and then declaring they “don’t owe” anyone anything when others engage them is one of the worst trends in modern discourse

@GregTSargent
on Biden’s speech
I simply think it is bad for my governor to lie like then when a robust, bi-partisan border deal is on the table and is being turned down by Republicans who are beholden to Donald Trump.
Joe Biden not only failed at his job but is being dishonest about his ability to do anything about it.
Proud to join
@GovAbbott
and other GOP governors to stand with Texas and call on Biden to actually do his job and protect the American people.
BREAKING: Florida parents and writers just filed a lawsuit against book bans in a pro-Trump county in the Florida panhandle, arguing that they're unconstitutional. If successful, this could provide a weapon against reactionary school book bans everywhere:
I grew up in fundamentalist evangelical Christianity (church of Christ). And this thread legit feels like the DSA version of those little religious tracts they used to keep in the church lobby.

Joe Biden has done the selfless thing, like many people told us he would. He beat Trump, revived the American economy, invested in our future, and now is doing one of the hardest things anyone can do in the service of his country—giving up power to protect our democracy
Absolutely everyone needs to read this
@GregTSargent
piece and the Cheney op-ed.
It’s far, far too easy for people to feel complacent about the possibility that Trump’s legal troubles solve our problems for us.
The risk he successfully games the system is real.
Liz Cheney just said something deeply troubling: If SCOTUS delays immunity ruling, voters might be denied critical info about Trump's conduct while the mob raged, which Jack Smith has. That would reward Trump allies for their coverup.
New piece from me:
Lest you think the GOP will be split between Trumpists and ardent defenders of democracy, I’m inclined to agree with this
@ThePlumLineGS
take: the primary fault line will be between those play acting Trumpism and genuine insurrectionists.
Gift link:
Rep. Raskin on MSNBC today saying “conversations are being had” about Biden and that the party will rally “whether he’s the candidate or whether he isn’t the candidate.”
Seems like a big shift in messaging.
But it’s also true, as
@ThePlumLineGS
points out, that these kinds of reactionary moments can galvanize younger generations into political activism in ways that have a lasting impact.
As you watch a transgender state Rep in Montana get punished, don't lose sight of the broader story here: As red states increasingly become reactionary fever swamps, a new generation of Gen Z and Millennial Dems is entering politics in response:
@waitmanb
I interned at an English language mag in Florence one summer. I spoke almost 0 Italian. After work I’d pass this old guy sitting on the stoop of and eventually I just started hanging next to him. He spoke no English. He was a sexton and took me inside Dante’s church after hours.
Not only that, I love my state. And I love it knowing that I am in the political minority. This piece is not an attempt to trash Arkansas in any way.
But I am outraged at the way my governor and her allies are running things.
"Arkansas is the state I know best, and it provides a clear example of the poisonous culture that develops among the state’s political leadership when the opposing party has no meaningful power."
@aselrod
on what a one-party (U.S.) state looks like:
That a spouse of sitting member of the Supreme Court was involved in an attempt to overthrow American democracy will never not be one of the wildest facts about this era
In oral argument today, Justice Thomas is minimizing the severity of the 1/6 insurrection at the Capitol. Perhaps that's because his wife was part of the conspiracy. What a disgrace that he's sitting on this case.
#SCOTUS
It's bad enough that Texas AG Ken Paxton and Stephen Miller are floating investigations and prosecutions of Media Matters to protect Elon Musk.
Worse, this is a preview of exactly what Trump allies are vowing to do if he regains power. 1/

I’m quite torn on kicking Trump off the ballots. But I think this
@ThePlumLineGS
thread refuting Ross Douthat’s recent essay is important.
The use of the 14th in this way is a serious but legitimate tool. We should be sober about the implications, but it is not anti-democratic.
This is a crucial point about
@DouthatNYT

This is unabashed thuggery in the defense of his own hide and his party’s political prospects. Our democracy is in peril, and this man stands a good chance of getting the gavel in 2023.
Dems must respond forcefully to Kevin McCarthy's obscene threat to punish companies that cooperate with the 1/6 committee. Experts tell me an Ethics Committee investigation is a minimum first step.

IMO, this from

is crucial. It wasn’t a given that DeSantis’s culture war stunts would fizzle, and the anti-liberal impulses behind them are still very popular on the right.
Seriously, saying “any competent” Dem could beat Trump in the same breath as he says Biden is the only Dem who could lose to Trump obviously suggests Biden is not competent.
He might as well call him senile. It’s absurd.

This is brutal. I asked

how our debate over aid to Ukraine is perceived in Ukraine and Russia.
Check out her answer. If the US abandons Ukraine, the rising global far right will see it as a sign of the decadence of western liberal democracy.
One reason I think the GOP isn’t coming back from MAGA is that Trump will do something like say he wants to kill migrants, and Republicans will somberly be like, “he shouldn’t talk so brashly if he wants to win Pennsylvania.”
“Another top GOP lawmaker/Trump booster: "The political implications of Trump and Vance handling this Tucker thing incorrectly are huge.
Every respected operative in this business could recognize how problematic this could become. This election will be won on the margins by
Our approach to immigration is so broken. I cannot fathom why any administration would consider bringing back family detentions.
And it’s so depressing that that’s the line where we have to have our fights, instead of a world where we’re looking to bring more people here.
It's true: Biden may bring back family detentions. It's being seriously debated by top officials, but some are warning against it. Strikingly, even some at ICE are resisting, sources tell me.
"We've seen detentions before, and it's not pretty," one says.
