Wrote a short thread on looking after your mental health during the tricky publication process…most of which, unsurprisingly, is about support networks, honesty and communication.
Would love to know others’ perspectives: what would you give as your top advice?
Before the event, each of us was asked to share the top 5 pieces of advice we'd give to writers going into the publishing process. I don't know if anyone will be interested, but just in case - here's what I sent through*:
*(Edited slightly for Twitter's character count.)
It's been almost 25 years, and yet I apparently still can't eat a Jaffa cake without mentally reciting:
"Full moon. HALLF Moon. Total Eclipse!"
Please say it's not just me?
I once sat in a BBC green room with David Starkey and Alasdair Gray. Alasdair mentioned his wish to nationalise services, to which Starkey snarked "That's just old-fashioned socialism". Alasdair thumped the table so hard the cups jumped, and shouted "YOU'RE DAMN RRRRRIGHT IT IS!"
We’ve lost someone truly special today. George Alagiah had a level of compassion, thoughtfulness and generosity that’s rare. It’s no exaggeration to say he was one of the people I felt luckiest to work with, and to spend time with over the years. The world is poorer without him.
Went to help a friend get her bags onto the train. Got stuck on the train as people wouldn’t move out of the aisle to let me off. Ended up in Carlisle.
Not how I expected to spend my afternoon, but I will say it’s a damn sight sunnier here than Edinburgh. Every cloud, I guess…?
The number of people wilfully misunderstanding or misrepresenting Tilly’s Twitter comment to an author - in which she said she was going to get rid of (her own!) copies of their books because she was surprised and disappointed by their gender critical views - is staggering to me.
Got chatting to a good looking guy in a bar. In 10 minutes of conversation:
- "I don't see the point of fiction"
- "I own 3 Air BnB flats"
- "Elon Musk is a genius"
- "The media was rigged against Leave"
- "Women have more power than men now"
- "Cats are better than dogs"
Sigh.
This tweet has gained rather more attention than I expected, but I’ll never be more confused than by the guys who leap in proclaiming it didn’t happen.
I mean - how boring does your life have to be, for *this* to seem like the stuff of far-fetched internet fiction??

Geeky it may be, but I truly love seeing someone react to the Edinburgh-Newcastle leg of the east coast train for the first time. Sitting across the aisle from some tourists on the early train south, and they’re just so delighted by it all. The light! The sea! Holy Isle! Berwick!
Maybe I should be able to laugh at it, but I’m finding all the videos of drunk football fans genuinely upsetting. My boyfriend is in hospital, I now struggle to walk to the park, people have lost jobs, health or loved ones - all because of Covid. Yet this is ok because: football?
Women - many of them likely survivors of male violence - protesting male violence, peacefully and quietly, are subjected to violence by male police officers. Utterly unforgivable.
Went for a swim and sauna this evening for the first time in ages; I’d forgotten how good it is for clearing my head and easing out post-work aches. Plus, just look how beautiful my local pool is…
A reminder that Gordon Brown is the last Prime Minister to actually stay long enough to be voted out, rather than kicked out by their own party. The Tories are a joke.
An employer does not own every facet of their employees’ lives. There are reasonable expectations around public behaviour that can and should impact your employment, but expressing disappointment in an author is not it.
(And no, she didn’t threaten to destroy Waterstones stock.)
And finally: whatever your view of Waterstones decision, the immediate flood of outright mockery and glee being shown on here, toward a bookseller who’s visibly gutted to have lost the job she loved, is deeply unsavoury, and speaks to a disconnect that I find really concerning.
Oh FFS. As though we don’t have enough real issues in publishing, without creating imaginary new ones in order to target our colleagues.
Publishing is stronger for platforming and listening to trans voices, and those involved in this anonymous group should be ashamed.
A publishing network for those “concerned about the impact of gender ideology on our sector and wider society” launched today for publishing professionals, authors and creatives 👇
Making someone stateless is against international law. Begum was born in the UK and has only ever held a British passport; whether you consider her a victim or a criminal, the idea we shouldn’t deal with her as a British citizen is astounding.
Shamima Begum should not be allowed to return to the UK to pursue an appeal against the removal of her British citizenship, the Supreme Court has ruled

It’s a memory of a man I was fond of - and, just as I’m glad that others seem to have derived joy from my sharing it, I’m sorry that you haven’t.
Hell of a double whammy for
@Lenniesaurus
- and couldn’t be more deserved.
This is the result, not just of weeks of events and press, but years of building a community, and making both poetry and Scots inclusive, accessible and downright enjoyable to a far wider audience.
I came for Scots Word of the Day, and stayed for the humour, the feminism, the honesty about mental health and - of course - the poems.
Having been a fan of
@Lenniesaurus
since the depths of the pandemic, I am VERY excited we'll publish her debut in Feb.
It’s sleeting, I’ve got covid (for the second time), and our government is apparently finding ever new and tortuous depths to plumb. There’s nothing for it - I’m lighting the fire and putting on the BBC adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.
Today has been a tough day, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in feeling that. I’m trying to remind myself I can’t control everything, but I can control some things - and to focus on the latter.
Also recommended: cheese toasties and tea.
Find yourself someone who looks at you, like Elif Shafak looks at Ruth Ozeki. Or, for that matter, find yourself someone who looks at you, like Ruth Ozeki looks at Elif Shafak…

Couldn't be prouder of the team at Canongate who've worked for 3 years to make this happen. That books are important can never be in doubt, but we can't forget publishers have an impact in many other ways too - and it's a choice as to whether that impact is positive or negative.
I’m rarely lost for something to say, but hearing Ruth Ozeki’s name read out on stage tonight - particularly from a shortlist of so many *brilliant* women - meant more to me than I can begin to express. This book… This author…
It turns out, sometimes words just aren’t enough.
Overnight, this has become one of my most popular tweets ever - in a top 3 alongside a story about Alasdair Gray and a comment about Jaffa Cakes.
Somehow that combination reflects me a little too well. And confirms I’ll never understand this platform.
The news is out! We are publishing
@Miranda_July
’s *extraordinary* new novel in May, and I couldn’t be more excited.
George Saunders calls it “a giddy, bold, mind-blowing tour de force by one of our most important literary writers.”

What does a book cost?
Back in 2015 we ran some calculations to figure out what a book costs, what it sells for, and where the money goes. We've done the sums again - for 2023 -and you head here for some grim, but hopefully also interesting, reading:
I've mentioned before here my concerns about the way in which interviews in some papers are now automatically presented in a culture wars context - or, worse, shoehorn in certain pet topics and/or cherrypick quotes, necessitating clarifications from interviewees later on.
@ladyhaja
Before this tweet I was unaware video footage had been released alongside the still. I will never forgive you for wrenching me out of that state of blissful ignorance.
I just want to acknowledge the two women who founded this prize. They did so because they believe passionately that nature writing needs to be accessible to & representative of a far greater range of voices. The prize is run in their spare time, for free.
The Nan Shepherd Prize is a prize for new and emerging nature writers. As part of your submission, we ask you to send in a non-fiction book proposal, including some sample writing and a synopsis of the book.
Bit of a biog change this morning. Proud to be part of such a brilliant team at
@CanongateBooks
- and particularly delighted for
@ZhouLucy105
and
@AislingGH
, and their well-deserved promotions.
First night in our new flat, and my mum dropped off homemade lasagne, garlic bread, salad, a bottle of red wine, apple crumble, a pot of single cream and a huge slab of Christmas cake.
@Pontifex
, can you please clarify exactly when her sainthood will be confirmed?
@AndySocrat800
Sure. Here’s the thread from the day in happened (both showing that Dalcher didn’t read it as being Waterstones stock, and then Tilly specifically countering that suggestion when it arose), and a subsequent tweet where she yet again reiterates it was her own copies.
I know there are bigger reasons to dislike them, but I'm just saying it's typical of this government to implode the same week I was due to have an author on ITV Good Morning Britain.
Just hit ONE THOUSAND preorders of a debut poetry collection, through a single independent bookshop...and we've still a fortnight to go until publication.
Is that some kind of a record?
Been torn all day between worry about the impact of an England win (nationalism, Covid) and wanting a bunch of clearly lovely guys, representing inclusivity & generosity, to succeed. As I watch, it seems my heart is for a win - and I’m happy for that. Positivity over negativity.
Really proud of Canongate for this one. Today a new employee bond scheme was launched, running alongside the existing uncapped bonus scheme, where staff of 3+ years receive a dividend payout whenever shareholders do (and at the same rate):
Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted people are excited about the match - but in the background of these clips you always spot airline staff or tube passengers or passersby, wearing masks and looking utterly miserable. The delta variant is here - are the crowds really necessary??
Never anything but love for Leakeys bookshop in Inverness (also apparently Ali Smith’s favourite). And yes, that it is a wood burning stove in the centre.
Excellent comment this afternoon from a parental friend:
“We lived in the tiniest flat in Fulham when we were first married; it was quite sweet. The dining room was basically a corridor, it was so small.”
DINING ROOM?!
Made it into the office for the first time in months - just for the day. There are no lifts or ‘bants’, I’m neither wearing a tie nor carrying a handbag, and my (not plastic) plant has rather thrived in my absence - which I’m trying not to take personally. Still, good to be back.
On the train, witnessing some beautifully British drama.
Four men are at a table together, all working on their laptops. None of them know - or have even spoken to - each other.
This is a really useful thread from Andrew, who’s been organising literary festivals in this country for longer than most - and, as former director of the much-missed
@bristolideas
- knows better than most the funding options available, and the pain of seeing a festival close.
There’s another interesting point we need to discuss in this quote in The Times when Fossil Free Books writes about ensuring ‘a source of income’. The problem is that festivals and arts organisations rely on many sources of income, each of which is under pressure. 1/
This has made me think a lot about event economics - as I think those numbers may surprise people too.
I don't have time to do a full breakdown, but on a very back-of-the-envelope level, an author coming from say London to Manchester for a bookshop event might look as follows:
It’s always such a special time of year in Edinburgh when the Gormleys start nesting. Can’t wait until the Spring, when we’ll have lots of little Gormleys making a racket on the river…
I really like
@CeliaRichards0n
on here. She has possibly one of the toughest Comms jobs out there right now, and generally seems to handle it with real humour, humanity and a pleasingly low tolerance for the relentless churn of culture war stories grounded in fantasy.
The culture warriors have reached the gates of the citadel. Now our scones are ‘‘secretly woke’.If you come for our scones you’d best not miss. (National Trust scones have been made without butter for many years and we publish all our recipes).
Huge credit to
@Dan_Zep
for turning a set of 1920s floorboards into an utterly beautiful set of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, in the single week that I was away…
…but am I also allowed to be as excited by the metamorphic library ladder/chair I’ve just bought to go with them?!
It was my mum’s birthday yesterday. If I make it to be a fraction as thoughtful, supportive, kind or stylish as her, I’ll feel pretty happy with life. She’s the best.
I’ve posted quite a bit recently about the importance of honesty and transparency in publishing - about the need to approach hard conversations upfront. I’ve also posted about the loss of
@AyeWrite
,
@bristolideas
and others - a direct result of the tough financial landscape.
Over the moon that not one but TWO Canongate titles are on this list - and as part of a longlist that features a majority of independently published books (including a record-breaking SIX from our own
@Indies_Alliance
).
Huge congratulations to
@TanTwanEng
and
@ayobamiadebayo
!
‘All 13 novels cast new light on what it means to exist in our time.’
We are delighted to reveal the
#BookerPrize2023
longlist. Huge congratulations to the authors who make up this year's Booker Dozen. 🎉

I am so ridiculously, bounce-off-the-walls excited about Damian's move to Canongate. Not only is the premise for his new novel UTTERLY up my street, he is also the perfect person to tell that story. Can't wait to share details with the world...
Over the moon to announce we've not one but TWO new books publishing soon from bookish wonder
@Damian_Barr
! A soon-to-be-revealed novel coming soon in 2025, and a memoir following in 2027!
Wishing the happiest of publication days to Annabelle Hirsch and translator Eleanor Updegraf!
A HISTORY OF WOMEN IN 101 OBJECTS is the story of womanhood as never told before, chronicling an unexpected, witty and always illuminating new history.
I know how hard it was for Len to write this piece. The response to it already shows quite how necessary it is to bring this conversation into the light.
Afternoon all! We're just in the process of sending out our 2025 Spring/Summer Highlights email.
If you're a journalist, producer, bookseller, event organiser or reviewer (incl those reviewing online!) who'd like to be on the list to receive this, please do drop me a line?
As I stood awaiting my coffee in Pret, with under 5 minutes until my train to London departed, I questioned my choices.
Now, on the train, out of breath but coffee in hand, hearing an announcement that the train coffee machine is broken, I feel fully vindicated.
Today I took the day off work and had a lazy morning with coffee and the paper and birdsong, then walked by the sea in the sunshine for about 4 hours, and it was 14C and felt like Spring. It was a day of good choices.
@Dorianlynskey
Guy Deutscher is really interesting on how all languages naturally contract for efficiency, then expand for emphasis or increased formality (eg aujourd'hui - this day today)…and repeat. I’m guessing ‘myself’ is probably an example of that?
Utterly delighted for the team at
@AyeWrite
that they've been given private funding, and are able to go ahead with these 9 high profile events - hopefully with more to come later in the year, including the vital kids' programme.
HOWEVER, this doesn't help the 160+ authors... >>
In the wake of news of further cuts to the arts by
@scotgov
, I keep thinking about the reception I attended last night, cohosted by
@edbookfest
,
@culture_ireland
and
@irlscotland
to celebrate the many Irish acts in Edinburgh this month. It's hard not to compare the two countries.
Our tweets about trans inclusion have gained a bit of traction, and we're conscious that there is a lot of conflicting information out there at current, so we thought we'd do a bit of mythbusting ahead of the vote on Friday 🧵
LEN PENNIE: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER!
How often do you see a debut poetry collection enter the Hardback Non-Fiction charts? Or for that matter a book written partly in Scots?! And to reach
#2
??!
Madness. Joyful, wonderful, magical madness.
Congratulations,
@Lenniesaurus
!
We're over the moon to announce that POYUMS, the debut poetry collection from
@Lenniesaurus
, is a Sunday Times bestseller entering the charts at Number 2!
This firecracker collection written in Scots & English is available now:
A reminder as cases rise: buy an oximeter and, if you get Covid, test oxygen levels regularly; they’re only a tenner and without one we’d never have known my boyfriend needed to go to A&E. Also: take paracetamol as often as the packet allows *whether you feel you need it or not*.
I've followed Len since the early days of Scots Word of the Day, and watched as she's consistently advocated for poetry that is inclusive, accessible & a means of talking about tough subjects - from mental health to misogyny. I cannot wait to hit the road with her on this tour!🔥
Lovers of language, devotees of poetry! Join
@Lenniesaurus
next month, as she heads on tour. Impassioned, angry, devastating, sometimes even funny...but definitely unmissable.
