when i would visit indigenous medicine people in ethiopia, the majority of their patients were suicidal women haunted by ptsd after returning from being a domestic worker in the Middle East
The murder of Ma’Khia Bryant hit me particularly hard because abolitionist spaces have generally not centered the family regulation system in their analysis. To the degree it’s mentioned, I see stats on outcomes or language of “kinder gentler policing”
I really don’t think the abandonment by the state can be resolved by privatized peer to peer cash apps where whoever writes the best trauma narrative and has the most social media influence wins
The family regulation system or child welfare as its most commonly known, is not “kinder or gentler”, it’s a horrific form of integenerational policing that exists on a vast continuum from removal, detention, child care, surveillance, etc
this is why afropessimism has currency and regardless of whether you agree with all of its tenets, it poses key questions about blackness in coalition, as perpetual analogy, as appropriated even when we’re not actually present
our people are regularly held out windows by their feet, made into concubines for the children of their employers, beaten, impregnated and otherwise treated as disposable. returning psychically decimated to communities expecting them to instead return w/ a financial windfall
1) AI is not taking anyone’s jobs. OpenAI a Microsoft subsidiary stole millions of writers work w/o their consent, fed it into proprietary algorithms to deliberately undercut writers capacity to earn a living wage while concealing plagiarism as innovation
sudan, south sudan, ethiopia and the drc have been subject to the largest commercial land transfers on the continent. you want to understand settler colonialism? the wars in each of these places? start there.
“Fired for Speaking Out Against Anti-Blackness and Ethnic Cleansing: Open Letter to Cornell Tech”
I’ve written about my firing, why it has long reaching political implications and I’m thankful to the community who has already supported my demands
the scale of human tragedy sometimes seeps thru coverage about us being sent back home from saudi prisons, refugees of libya videos depicting the spectacularly tortured and held for ransom, but it’s often narrated as timeless rights violations sans historical/political context
relegating black queer and trans existence to “grad school terms” and “inane rage tweets” sounds a lot like Chappelle complaining about “the alphabet people”, “BLM’s gay agenda”, or broader leftist histories saying gender identity is bourgeois liberal decadence
imagine how deeply we have been taught to hate ourselves in order to pay a smuggler to take us somewhere that this kind of fate might await us. Imagine how constitutive antiblackness is from point A to point B for this fate to be as regular as death and taxes
I’m not denying that sometimes kids are unsafe in their home, that sometimes parents can’t parent but 9/10 people don’t understand that child welfare is a system that produces death, jail and sexual assault.
I think people who are not directly impacted by the system conceive of the problem as microagressing White social workers, but most are not MSWs they are “caseworkers” because brick and mortar poorhouses at the turn of the 20th century were predicated on “worthiness” of aid
it’s bigger than kafala which as many scholars points out is the condition for all foreign employment incl a professional class not subjected to the same violences. it’s about the domestic sphere’s constitutional reliance on unfree horn labor
It’s also from the other end, a testament to how we are collectively taught, especially in the countryside, that we are backwards, shamefully living in dirt houses that must be abandoned. Many embark on the journey having heard stories of what might await them.
Child Protective Services/The Family Regulation System has never been about safety, it’s about incapacitating parents and terrorizing the most vulnerable children.
Greg Abbot has officially directed Family and Protective Services to begin investigating all trans children in Texas and prosecuting their parents as child abusers.
He has also instructed all teachers, doctors, and caregivers to begin reporting any trans students they see.
i do care about the Ukraine but I don’t know enough to add anything to the conversation so I am fulfilling my duty to be quiet, read and listen to those who do.
Our “social safety net” was always punitive but as
@DorothyERoberts
writes, the family regulation system became most punitive when Black women fought for inclusion into AFDC (aid for dependent families and children)
So it’s fascinating that
@google
hired Marian Croaks to replace
@timnitGebru
on the AI Ethics team stating she’s a Black history icon with so many patents but no one talks about what exactly she was patenting beyond VOIP
They strip search every kid in the house when there’s a child welfare investigation. There is nothing kind or gentle about the family regulation system. Plantation metaphors don’t do it justice cuz it’s like the auction block was never dismantled just professionalized
So caseworkers were detectives investigating the family’s case, like were they truly worthy of government assistance based on destitution. Majority European immigrants had to give up their rights to citizenship and “whiteness” to enter these poorhouses
Scroll to Clinton abolishing “welfare as we know it” to stop the welfare queens (poverty racialized as Black), the Crime Bill heralds not just the beginning of mass incarceration but the height of family separations in the US
Data is simply translating characteristics of any given phenomena into discrete, countable events. Data are not facts, they are just reflections of the data collector’s view of the world and the infrastructure available to them.
Kids in care end up dead all the time; in foster homes, group homes, residential, detention center, but who’s demanding an autopsy? Would we have known if it was an Adoptive parent or group home worker and not a cop that killed her?
The moment you come into contact with child welfare, you’re like 11:59 of the doomsday clock. If you don’t open the door, they’re calling the cops, if you get too loud they’re calling the cops, 5 min late, cops, cops, cops
There is no working within a university that is so deeply invested in siding with Israel as it seeks to annihilate Palestinian life and sics NYPD on students protesting for liberation.
We are suspending Logic(s) until student demands are met. Join us. WALK OUT
As a project administratively housed
@Columbia
, we are appalled at the university president’s decision to authorize the NYPD to violently disperse the Gaza Solidarity Encampment and are suspending all operations until the student’s demands are met.
Aka give up their right to vote, put their kids on Children’s Aid Society orphan trains to the west, placed with *good Christian families* or into workhouses and residential centers where many literally were beaten into worthiness
The twitter ban on 45 is a victory in some sense for the immediate but a warning in the long term, not on the curtail of free speech but as gesture towards the expansive power commercial tech has on every aspect of our governance and our lives, I don’t quite have the words but-
In November ‘97, Clinton passes the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) where the state mandates termination of parental rights (TPR) for children who have been in foster care for 15 out of the last 22 months.
I felt
@prisonculture
when she said she ain’t got no anxiety about the Chauvin verdict cuz she divested from the system, but I also grieve for what passes with no public emotion b/c it doesn’t get recognized as a system
Dylan Roof murdered 9 people in this church and got McDonalds after. His FB page was decorated w/ Rhodesia and apartheid South Africa emblems, confederate flags and heil hitler but 9 years later, a “4 more years” chant drowns out protestors of Israeli apartheid and genocide
BREAKING: Activists in South Carolina just took over Biden's speech to call for a ceasefire.
"20,000 dead Palestinians; their blood is on your hands."
Biden was shaken. He's starting to understand the reality: his war on Gaza is horrifically unpopular, and people are fed up.
S/o to
@movfamilypower
who started the
@RepealASFA
campaign because almost a quarter century later, kids are having their parents rights terminated because billion dollar agencies are commodifying kids over reuniting them
Palestinians, unlike much of the Arab world tbh, have made a substantial effort to form solidarity with oppressed people globally, developed political education materials and teach-ins. This notion that non-Palestinians are “uninformed” is simply a tactic to silence
I support
@timnitGebru
and we are doomed if demands for corporate transparency are the horizon of tech worker resistance. Let the ethic washing bridges to nowhere burn, so we can birth meaningful, radical resistance against the social impacts of AI/ML
🗣 Reminder to please listen to
#adoptees
#FFY
and people currently in the foster care system (of which I’m not but am always down to amplify those who are)
Also pleaseeeee listen to
#adoptees
, former foster youth (
#ffy
) and people currently in the foster care system.
If you’re in these categories I’m always down to amplify. I just don’t want to subject you to unwanted following 😬 by tagging all the time
This produces a generation of legal orphans as many of them
either are left in foster care or if adopted under the age of 12, come back in on PINS (person in need of supervision/kiddy parole) petitions as teenagers
2) It’s disturbing how so many journalists continue to ascribe agency to non-sentient large language models while also denigrating blue collar work as dirty, repetitive and seemingly acceptable sites of antisocial automation *unlike* superior white collar jobs for white people
GPT v whatever is just an elaborate public relations campaign that seems to be successful in that people continue to be debating sentience claims instead of focusing on the corporate capture of academia, centralization of compute power and the sectors active military applications
people simply don’t know as much about Congo, Sudan or Ethiopia so linkages to genocide in Gaza need to be coupled with education. Yes antiblackness but its also mediated by who gets to (survive) and emigrate to western academies and movements w/ the biggest mics
this highlights how child services only exists to police parents. ACS is nowhere to be found when schools are subzero temperatures, when police are killing our kids or when shelters are rat infested. they only get called on parents.
Prescient warning by
@DorothyERoberts
about translating the defunding of police into increased investment of misnamed child welfare agencies that violently surveil and separate families.
#AbolishACS
Are we ever going to talk about the way Coded Bias both shows the dangers of facial recognition and promotes US State Department propaganda with a framing of we need to hurry up and civilize AI before we end up living in a Chinese dystopia? 👀
Gaza is the first genocide of this century receiving this level of international attention. I think we have to be mindful though of how the tactics we’re witnessing were implemented in Tigray since 2020 and have been ongoing through different methods in the DRC and Sudan
Listen up. Gaza is a blueprint for all of us this century. This is what the first real signal of this new century looks like, out in the open, clear for all to see.

Also, the NYC child welfare system is almost exclusively Black and Puerto Rican vs nationally where it’s disproportionally Black. The only parallel is North Dakota where foster care is almost exclusively indigenous

antiblackness is not “US centric race politics,” it is the weather structuring the very heart of that clip of Motaz. it’s why even response to genocide is stratified by race
so since June, i’ve been sick as a dog which has slowed down the hustle.
I got hella kids, responsibilities and dreams that I refuse to give up on. I refuse to die just as I have arrived at the prime of my life. If you can, please contribute.
periodic reminder that meritocracy is a lie, professional success = collective access determined by your social location. Didn’t get that fellowship? Did you know the person who created it? No? that’s why. everything is about networks or serendipity/proximity
code camps accomplished 2 things: proletarianizing programming jobs by producing a surplus of skilled labor and entrenching computation as a first principle across every mode of professional life. so not a scam as much as an epistemic takeover tied to gutting worker power
There’s no way for engineers employed at tech corporations to ensure the seemingly innocuous component their team is working on isn’t part of a weapons system. There is a genocide in Gaza and most of you are building the weapons, these are the grounds, these are the stakes.
really excited to share
@xrw
and I will be relaunching
@logic_magazine
in January 2023 as Logic(s), the first black + asian queer tech magazine. grateful to the founders for passing the torch to us ❤️
people: morally appealing to facebook
me: they’re literally cia
i’m not a nihilist just saying you can’t develop effective tactics if you don’t understand the situation you’re up against
also those of us who been organizing against family policing haven’t emphasized enough how the genocidal separation of black and indigenous families was a method of disciplining queer kinship and disallowing trans life
The state’s willingness to destroy families and traumatize trans kids in order to preserve the “sanctity” of the family and purge transness from existence is beyond horrifying.
“I can’t believe this” has to stop; this is the logical conclusion of years of legislative antagonism.
the fact that we’re reliant on NYPD to give us updates on a shooting that was in no way stopped by the massive influx of police in subways yet will lead to more police everywhere in brooklyn is some bullshit
does Palestine have to do with black people, ought we be present in uprisings against Israel’s genocide? Yes and are—including but not limited to the fact that some black people are palestinian. but all are struggles are linked ≠ all struggles are like being blac
I have been eagerly awaiting what
@timnitGebru
will do next, unspeakably excited to see Timnit’s vision for tech, ethics and knowledge production come to fruition ❤️💫 We need this.
Ethiopia is a settler colony long predating the nakba. A good question to ask is “What is the historical relationship between the beta Israel and Abyssinian colonialism?” or at minimum, the Derg regime which traded them w/ Israel for cluster bombs
TW Graphic family police violence. I don’t normally share things like this but am doing so at the parent’s request. NYPD and ACS came to last year w/ no warrant to remove her grandson from her teenage daughter. Beat her up and then took her son, claiming they beat up the cops
the human trafficking investigation under obama revealed the majority of actual trafficking victims were current or former foster kids. The response, funneling more funding into family policing in tandem w/ criminalizing voluntary sex work.
Most anti-trafficking campaigns are copaganda designed funnel more funding and support for police and laws that monitor, regulate, and criminalize sex workers, immigrants, BIPOC, and queers.
7 weeks ago, my father wrote me an email stating my rejection of Ethiopian nationalism (allegiance to an empire that neither of us live in!) is creating a permanent rift.
i don’t think people “wanting their life back” is reactionary, we shouldn’t forget there was a time when we could commune, laugh, share air together and not get sick or die.
? black people in Sudan are not a rhetorical device, they are the ones who raised the issue and also remain in solidarity w/ palestine. the problem is not Palestinians, it’s those who equate naming antiblackness, w/ retracting solidarity
The way people are quickly turning their back on Palestinians because of what Motaz said shows y’all never cared about Palestine
Like y’all were waiting for something to pop off so YOU can have a moment to be self righteous and say “I told y’all they hated us” which is just sick
this to me is the core of the issue and the problem w/ 972s coverage. if you’re familiar with the corp marketing term AI you know there’s no accuracy to speak of, stats washing occupation and genocide is a sales pitch to other states who wish to buy genocide efficiency
The fact that I got fired for initially posting a Kamala Harris sips tea GIF which evolved into a claim that my “incendiary social media posts about ethnic conflict in Ethiopia aka speaking against ethnic cleansing defies imagination
Part 3 in
@logic_magazine
Sudan series,
@KushiteDictator
discusses coming of age during wartime from basic routines like how she charges her phone to a critical re-evaluation of the Sudanese Armed Forces and her identity as someone who grew up in Khartoum.
data/computer science, tech policy is bounded by rawlsian notions of distributive justice (at best), leaving us with vacuous concepts like hate speech and disinformation, nakedly insufficient with the backdrop of war.
“techbro” is just the reemergence of thinking it’s cool to hate nerds, mixed in with a bunch of resentment from watching the last 20 years of nerds taking over the world
i think the word adoption conjures an image of a family benevolently taking in an orphan rather than a legal process whereby a child loses access and is banned from the family relationships they were born into. It is disturbingly effective marketing.
what’s narrated as “predominantly hispanic” is a heterogenous group of chicanxs, indigenous peoples from mexico and mestizos. Border patrol was a first responder, the teacher was married to SWAT, in 1970 Uvalde HS held one of the longest student walkouts for the Chicano Movement,
Hamas has no connection to the rapid support forces/janjaweed but Israeli intelligence does. Also it’s gross to continuously appropriate videos of Masalit people’s suffering to try and undermine Black/Palestinian solidarity

Contrary to the popular understanding that child support is meant to go to kids, more than $1.7B in child support collected from fathers in 2020 was seized by federal and state governments as repayment for mothers & children having been on welfare.

@logic_magazine
i think middle class people are having a hard time understanding the pandemic response is not an education gap or a “lack” of political will. The state has chosen abandonment, it is actively investing in eugenics, not simply unwilling to spend money on evidence based solutions.
I remember when everyone was talking about therapy language being weaponized. Unfortunately many more people are going to find out therapy *is* a weapon
the problem with critical tech is that despite its stated refutation of technosolutionism, it programmatically tends to start with some given tech instead of looking at the long duree of surveillance, repression and extraction it’s adopted into in that local context
most overdoses are accidental, harm reduction means it’s better when people don’t use alone, that they use with someone who has naloxone, that they have access to suboxone when possible/desired. “addicts” aren’t the problem, stigmatizing use and gutting public health systems is

Fascinating because Hossein Eslambachi while not totally forthcoming with
@theintercept
did acknowledge he lead the project allowing the NSA to do warrantless wiretapping of American citizens through AT&T’s central hubs
Also, the NYC child welfare system is almost exclusively Black and Puerto Rican vs nationally where it’s disproportionally Black. The only parallel is North Dakota where foster care is almost exclusively indigenous
The murder of Ma’Khia Bryant hit me particularly hard because abolitionist spaces have generally not centered the family regulation system in their analysis. To the degree it’s mentioned, I see stats on outcomes or language of “kinder gentler policing”
in a world where much of political action is “raising awareness”, solidarity often is misconstrued as a question of being informed when in fact, the beautiful risk of solidarity is not knowing but being deeply curious and wanting to
I’m so grateful that I transitioned from receipts custodian to eic b/c I will be publishing an in-depth investigation into the ecosystem that loves to villainize

I will not be crossing the picket line for this Friday’s conference on the abolition of the child welfare/family regulation system. (It appears likely that it will be rescheduled as a whole with wide support from panelists for the Union)
