Stop testing, play it down, normalise the deaths, deny the long-term consequences, learn to live with it, mock the scientists. Trying to imagine what would've happened if we'd taken the same approach to a previous fast-spreading infectious disease (eg smallpox, polio, TB, HIV).

In the current pandemic context, masks don’t take away your freedom - they *increase* your freedom. If everyone indoors is effectively masked, I can go to the office, shop, get on trains, go to cinema etc. If nobody’s masked, we’re all less safe hence lifestyles more restricted.

New LANCET report lists 9 global failures which contributed to a failed pandemic response. Number 2 is "costly delays in acknowledging the crucial airborne exposure pathway of SARS-CoV-2". (I might dig out the emails from big names telling me to shut up.)

Sometimes, in banking, you can talk things up. By saying X is improving, you instil confidence in the market, which leads to investment, so X starts to improve. This is not the case with pandemics. Telling a virus you've beaten it, and acting as if that were true, is very unwise.

Worried about the new mutant strain? Don’t understand genetics? Me neither. Here’s some advice: - avoid crowds - don’t share air - wear a mask - ventilate eg open windows - get vaccinated

Three drownings or near-drownings have hit my timeline today. Before I was a doctor, I was a lifeguard. Posting again this brilliant article on how to spot drowning.

MASKS are back (=> they’re trending on social media and I’m getting hate mail). A short thread. See my pinned tweet for a longer thread with lots of peer-reviewed articles.🧵 1/

Let’s start with observational data. Countries that introduced mandated masking within 30 days of the first case (mostly Asian) had *dramatically* fewer Covid-19 cases than those that delayed beyond 100 days (mostly Western). 2/

I’m 61. I predict that we will never, in my lifetime, return to what we took to be normality. Don’t drink the Kool Aid.

If UK government decide they need extra scientific help to deal with the Covid-19 crisis, I’m available. Unlike some Oxford professors, I’ve never been asked my opinion on pandemic policy. Unlike some, I’ve never been catastrophically wrong in my predictions either. Just saying.

Lockdown was working. Staying away from elderly relatives was working. As politicians mobilise to defend one man’s selfish choices, family after family are saying “we’ve had enough” and renewing contact. This government will never wash its hands clean of these avoidable deaths.

A bit of cloth over the face simply doesn’t have the same risks as a novel drug or vaccine, and *doing nothing* could conceivably cause huge harm. Arguing for “caution” without engaging with the precautionary principle was scientifically naïve and and morally reckless. 7/

We have *exponential growth*. We should act. I’m bookmarking this tweet to repost 4 weeks after schools reopen in England.

Just a suggestion: wear a well-fitting mask whenever indoors with others. I've been saying this for 20 months as the waves of the pandemic rise and fall. I'm bookmarking this tweet.

I told @BBCNewsnight that lining up 2 Oxford professors to give opposing messages on face coverings with a “scientists can’t agree” storyline was irresponsible journalism and will cost lives. At the very least they should have been honest with us about the set-up. I am sickened.

@JillYGld Not only did they manufacture a spat - they didn’t tell me they’d lined him up until after I’d agreed to do it, so I had the choice of dropping out and making it look like I was scared to face him

One of the best moments of this pandemic for me so far. Unsolicited email: Dear Dr G, I saw you on TV talking about masks. Excuse me asking but were you a GP in [X-- surgery] in 1993? Me: Indeed I was. Reply: Then I think you saved my life.

@trishgreenhalgh I'm sorry, Trisha, but this is way off base. Evidence-based medicine was never defined in terms of randomized trials. Go back and listen to what Sackett said in 1996 ... oh, wait a minute, you were actually at that meeting

Dear members of the public The reason you can't get to see a GP is they're driving for Uber. The reason they're driving for Uber is they can't get jobs. The reason they can't get jobs is the UK govt is bankrolling the hiring of underqualified Physician Associates in their place.

Took an Uber home on Tuesday evening from Central London. The person driving was a qualified GP unable to get work. Post CCT, 100+ applications / CV drops to salaried roles around Herts & Bucks.

Had quite a bit of backlash to our paper, published last week, which set out 10 streams of evidence supporting predominance of AIRBORNE spread of SARS-CoV-2. I respond to some criticisms in this thread. 1/
