underwent a major restoration in the 1980s. Iron armature bars were replaced with stainless steel ones. Copper sections were taken apart; cleaned and then re-riveted back together. Finally, the original torch was replaced shown here in 1985.

Winter Storm Early Closure
Due to the winter storm, Liberty and Ellis Islands will close to the public today at 3:00 p.m.
The final ferry from Battery Park will be at 1:30 p.m.
We anticipate resuming normal operations tomorrow, Friday, February, 19.

Lady Liberty is stepping forward? The statue's raised right heel is meant to symbolize the forward movement of liberty. Broken shackles at the bottom of her feet represent a fuller version of liberty, realized by the end of slavery in America in 1865.

The Statue of Liberty National Monument & Ellis Island Will Reopen - The National Park Service, through a funding agreement with the State of New York, will reopen the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island on Monday morning, January 22. 4tix

October 28th, 1886 the dedication of the Statue of Liberty takes place on

. Over two thousand dignitaries and guests were in attendance. During the ceremony, President Grover Cleveland officially accepts the statue on behalf of the American people.

To raise $ and attention for his creation, Auguste Bartholdi showcased the Arm of Liberty at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Visitors could purchase tickets to climb up the arm and into the torch. Liberty's first torch is now on display at the

was dedicated in 1886, the US Lighthouse Board was in control of the Statue. In 1901, the US War Dept. took over and it was under their watch it became a
