With extreme relief .. we can now report that logging in as an ordinary user (non-root) now works properly, and there are no more blockers for me installing Serpent OS as my daily driver to speed up the build and delivery of the prealpha ISO.

The @FrameworkPuter 13 has been an essential tool in our testing of updates. Stack up a backlog and then chuck them all in at once, see how the tooling copes. While not breaking anything. Sidenote, it runs like a dream on the Ryzen configuration!

The past week in serpent land has been completely crazy. We've enabled flatpak, qemu & virgl, hotfixed ssl cert handling, got moss managing /efi & /boot mounts robustly, fixed up zed and firefox, you name it. We now build and test serpent isos on serpent. Prealpha0 imminent.

Probably obvious by now but we're following the cosmic work by @system76 very closely, and started packaging some of the apps up last night: term, files and edit. We're fixing integration as we go in serpent so we can offer a great cosmic experience as it continues to mature

Working on a lil something something with libcosmic.. A new frontend for lichen. Despite being super early we've already hooked it up to `inventory`, such that pages are built based on cargo features, and loaded dynamically at runtime using their string-based name..

Landed a PR from Joey for GNOME 46 in Serpent. Built in under 20 minutes and now users can `sudo moss sync -u` to get on latest GNOME. The prealpha0 ISO will install latest GNOME automatically too.

It likely isn't obvious at first glance, but there are a number of low level differences "from the norm" in Serpent OS, including the use of rustls for curl, being built for x86_64-v2 and UEFI only (auto x86-64-v3+ planned via moss), and LLVM/Clang/libc++ for default toolchain.

Some testing of a fresh serpent install this morning. As some last cli installer touches we'll have it write the fstab, hostname. Highly likely we'll use gnome-initial-setup in the gnome selection to handle some initial configuration for now.

Lots of updates in the last few days, will definitely need a blog post. Make sure you 'sudo moss sync -u' to get updated. GNOME users will now have working power-profiles-daemon. Thunderbird and more in repos, and flathub configured ootb in gnome-software.

Since we started building Serpent OS for realsies yesterday, we've managed 68 new .stone pkgs. Not bad for a slow day! The further we go the faster we'll get, making that elusive ISO a reality now.

The magic behind our trigger design. Each match path is defined as a conventional glob with additional syntax to capture a variable from that path. The variables are then made available to commands that are run as part of the trigger. No need for helper scripts.

Thanks to our prealpha roadtesting we've uncovered some gnarly corner case bugs in moss. We're now working on a robust test suite to rectify the issues, and prevent any more coming to light. Thank you to our highly engaged community for helping us get robust so early on!

Over two years of effort, finally, paying off. In the space of a few days, largely with community contributions, we've gone from bootstrapped to a functioning container environment with sudo (pending merge today), pam, systemd and *almost* our first kernel. What a blast.

Some critical updates landed last night including systemd and pam, enabling econf too. Updated various cosmic packages, fixing up pam integration for serpent and localed, with pam_env.conf setting suitable fallback PATH. Tldr cosmic greeter path bug fixed for 0.5
