I wrote this about the limits of representational politics and the desire for 'Brown faces in high places'. A more diverse Supreme Court of Canada is not necessarily any more just.
Proud to see so many colleagues have signed. What is happening in Palestine is not complicated: Israel is a settler colony engaging in apartheid and genocide. They don't want you to talk (or think) about it, because this simple truth quickly becomes apparent when you do.
We are members of the legal profession in Canada concerned about the pervasive repression of speech on Palestinian liberation. Read our open letter signed by 350+ lawyers, legal workers and academics.
I'm out. Sadly, Fragile Pete didn't sign the ceasefire statement while I was in jail, so I'm back at the sit-in at his office: daily from 12-6p at 231 Hyman Street. Join us!
Expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people against Israeli apartheid and colonization is not a crime. This is a reprehensible statement for a mayor, let alone one who claims to be a progressive.
What Q. said. If you’re charged by Toronto police for resisting the JDL at the Palestine solidarity demo last night, and need a lawyer, please reach out.
Ontario warehouses people in overcrowded jails. Health care is abysmal.

will spread swiftly. Incarcerated people will die. Doug Ford needs to release *all* those in provincial jails, the majority of whom are waiting trial and presumed innocent of the charges against them
People in prisons and jails are uniquely vulnerable to coronavirus.
Hundreds of thousands of people are in jail every day simply because they can’t post bail.

100%. Appreciate your courage in publicly supporting the Palestinians notwithstanding the smears, and proud to call you my colleague and friend.
Reminder that Omar Khadr was convicted under laws that made it legal for occupying American soldiers to kill him, but a war crime for him to fight back. The US literally created a new offence to prosecute him. Calling him a "convicted terrorist" is absurd.
Even if an assault took place, the transit officers’ reaction is completely disproportionate. But the real problem here is there shouldn’t be transit officers hassling people about fare payments in the first place. Public transit should be free.
The Star with an absolute disasterclass today.
Act 1: Canadian corporate law firms - counsel to the banks, arms manufacturers, oil and gas, mining, etc. - should👏🏽hire👏🏽more👏🏽women👏🏽of👏🏽colour.
Act 2: Let's platform a white supremacist to tell why he should be Prime Minister.
People are struggling and being told there is no money for more CERB. Cases skyrocket as people are forced to go to work sick to avoid eviction and put food on the table...and Bay Street is raking in profits in the billions. Business as usual. Depraved.
Canadian banks are making so much profit during this pandemic that OSFI, the banking regulator, has to tell them again and again not to increase dividends and executive pay!
McDonald's forcing people to work during a global pandemic at considerable risk to the worker/the worker's family/the community writ large: not a crime.
Forging a doctor's note to avoid said risk: a crime.

An employee at a Hamilton McDonald’s is facing four charges connected to fraud after she used a fake positive COVID-19 doctor's note to get out of work, say police.
‘More action is required to address the over-incarceration of Indigenous, black and other marginalized Canadians’: Independent MP Jody Wilson-Raybould questioned Justice Minister David Lametti about mandatory minimum sentences.

If you ever needed a reminder that in Canada there are two legal systems - one for the rich and the powerful, and one for the rest of us - this is it. SNC-Lavalin had Trudeau draft a law beneficial to its interests, and then try to ensure the new law was applied in its favour.
Last Saturday was my 10 year vegan anniversary. Here’s what sparked it: a Marineland protest. I went vegan a week later, and then joined the animal liberation movement. It was foundational to forming my belief in prison abolition, and why I’m a criminal defence lawyer today.
The Canadian judiciary, especially appellate courts, need judges like this. Judges don't just "apply the law"/call balls and strikes. Their politics inform their judgment (like when the Supreme Court refused to ban the govt. from deporting refugees despite a risk of torture)

Including Bay St. firms - the facilitators of structural racism - speaks volumes about the political objectives of the campaign. Bay St. firms want to diversify their boardrooms. It's good for business. That's not challenging racism. That's diversifying the ruling class.
The recently retired head of the Toronto police union is now the Chief Risk Officer of a multibillion dollar Bay Street firm. On top of a house in Scarborough, he has a $2.45 million (U.S.) Florida home and over $5.6 million in stocks and stock options.

Arash noted in his piece that "the campaign has largely centered the experiences of lawyers of colour on Bay Street and served to cast certain big law firms who support it in a palatable, socially responsible light." I agree:
