My dad survived the Holocaust partly bec a Catholic woman named Maria pretended to be his mom so he could hide in plain sight. Every year at Passover, he replaces the lines about divine vengeance against persecutors w a story of Righteous Gentiles (non-Jews who rescued Jews). 1/3

This year’s story was about Nikolai & Mikhail Vavrisevich & their family in what’s now Ukraine. The boys asked their parents to take in 2 Jews hiding in the woods. Turned out the parents were already hiding 5 Jews. . You can find more stories there too. 2/3

Dear Every Drug Store: Enough with keeping the baby stuff in the "feminine needs" aisle. Do you think we'll buy *more* diapers if we catch a glimpse of them when buying tampons, or vice versa? Put the goddamn diapers next to the CONDOMS. I'd love to see this play out.

I’m writing a book about biblical monsters. The Bible’s filled with hybrid creatures, vengeful spirits, ghosts, giants & supernatural hitmen, These are bizarre, destructive beings we would ID as monsters ANYWHERE else. Well, they’re monsters when it’s the Bible too.

We need to face what’s actually in the Bible & grapple with the Bible’s legacy of the sanctification of violence. (yep, including NT!) The Bible is not a go-and-do-likewise monolith, it's a rich collection of many voices, and how you read them matters

I write about the monsters of (biblical) literature because of the monsters of reality. The ancient thinkers struggle to make sense of the world around them, a world of danger, violence, and grief... as we struggle to make sense of the monstrosities of our world. Struggle on.

I've long thought of patriarchy/misogyny in academia as defined in pt by governing assumption that *reputations* of men are more important to keep safe than the *bodies* of women, children, &c. But still utterly shocked & horrified by this--both the deeds & the attempt at erasure

Yesterday my almost 3-yr-old saw me play the beginning of a gorgeous & flashy piece by Sarasate (Ziegeunerweisen) on the violin. He asked me to play Baby Shark. So I did. He was so excited he peed in his pants. Sorry, Sarasate.

What I really do for a living is open the Bible, turn it upside down and give it a good shake, and see what comes falling out. (Turns out it's a lot of horrible monsters.) Will that fit on my tax forms?

I got to see cover design ideas for my biblical monsters book and they are SO awesome! I can't wait. In the meantime, here's last October's talk -- have a creepy Halloween! "The Biblical God and His Entourage of Monsters" via @YouTube

ALL OF THIS. And I'll add: how stunningly self-centered, and self-centering, it is for people to see a man's sex crimes against children... and think that forgiveness is *theirs* to give! That erasure of the children, on top of everything else, is its own form of brutality.

From at least what I've seen, most of the pushback to Stephen Young's @RDispatches piece on "himpathy" for Jan Joosten has pivoted on his claim there (citing me & @AntheaButler ) that "we cannot separate the work from the person" - hence, a thread... 1/?

Fun time giving a special lecture on my work on biblical monsters @UnionSeminary yesterday. Love to see people so engaged while I mess with your view of seraphim and cherubim! Wish we’d had time for the full cohort of God’s monsters... but it’s a long list.

"When a wronged man or woman cries out to you, be there and judge their case! This only I have demanded from you!" -- prophet of Adad of Aleppo, reported by Nur-sin to King Zimri-lim of Mari, ca. 1800 BCE (A. 1121 + A. 2731, trans. Nissinen) Oldest story in the book.

Made a new #jewishmonsterhunting trading card. The #Nehushtan is Moses' copper serpent that channeled God's power to heal Israelites from the bites of the flying flaming seraph serpents. It was later destroyed by King Hezekiah because the Israelites were making offerings to it.

My interview in US Catholic went live last week: Traditional interpretation has sanitized biblical stories of God deploying monsters against people. That’s a loss. What poignant expressions of the pain & chaos of life! The Bible isn't about easy answers.

My 3 year old is singing a song that's 3 parts incomprehensible babbling, the likes of which we've never heard before, and 1 part chorus of "no pants today!" He sings for the nation. He sings for the world.

The 2-yr-old, sitting on his teeny green scooter in our bedroom in front of my grandmother's dresser: "Foo [whew], I glad I found a parking spot." Long live city kids.
