Next, we recognize Ishmael Beah '04, who is best known for his memoir detailing his experience as a child soldier in Sierra Leone in the 1990s during his home country's Civil War. His book, A Long Way Gone, was named one of the Top 10 Nonfiction Books of 2007.

Oberlin was one of 10 communities that went against the grain to help Japanese Americans in WWII. The Courage and Compassion exhibit documents the actions of the college and city.
The new health and wellness center was built with the intent of bringing the campus community together by fostering healthy connections between body and mind.

Emily Lozier '18 is the winner of Oberlin's second annual Nexial Science Prize. The $50,000 award is given to a graduating science major who demonstrates academic excellence an a passion for cultural study.

We recognize Mary Church Terrell, an activist who fought for racial equity and women's suffrage. Her words “Lifting as we climb” became the motto of the National Association of Colored Women, a group she founded. An 1886 graduate, our main library is named in honor of her.
The renovation of this historic building includes the addition of the Irene & Alan Wurtzel Theater, an adaptable space; and the updated Kander Theater for student productions.
Fifty years ago, Oberlin responded to the killings of antiwar protesters at Kent State University with vigils, protests, discussions, and music. Find out more in this special issue of the Oberlin Alumni Magazine.
