Earlier today we hosted a small private Dedication of Names Ceremony for the three families of the Armed Forces personnel killed on duty in 2019 whose names were recently engraved on the Armed Forces Memorial.
The RAF paid a special tribute with a dramatic flypast.
Early this morning at the Arboretum, a lone piper’s lament marked 70 years since the end of the Korean War on 27 July 1953. Wreaths were laid to remember those who sacrificed their lives in the conflict and to honour all who served.

Despite being closed today, the very small team on site observed a 2-minutes’ silence on the Armed Forces Memorial to remember the Second World War generation. A wreath was laid on behalf of the team and our visitors.

Last week we lost a big part of our community in Sarah Oakden, our head of marketing. Her tragic death, far too young, leaves a massive hole, and our thoughts are with her husband John and daughter Molly.

in 1982, HMS Coventry was attacked by Argentine aircraft during the
#Falklands
War. Within 20 minutes, the ship was abandoned and had completely capsized, sinking shortly after. The 19 crew members killed in action on board are remembered at the Arboretum.

in 1915, Private Herbert Burden was shot for desertion at Ypres, aged just 17. He was formally pardoned in 2006 and is remembered by the Shot at Dawn memorial at the Arboretum, which reopened recently following extensive renovation work.

in 1968, flight attendant Jane Harrison helped passengers escape from a burning aircraft near Heathrow airport. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross for heroism, the only woman to be directly awarded the medal for gallantry in peacetime.
