I am thrilled to announce that
@gynger_io
has raised $21.7 million in Seed funding to help drive the growth of our business. We have been quietly building over the past year, incredibly grateful to now share what we are all about.
When raising for
@Braze
I had the 24 hour rule with VCs. If after our call or meeting I did not hear back or from them within 24 hours I knew it was a pass. The 24 hour rule is real!
I’m excited to share that we officially launched
@mxvcapital
today with the close of our over-subscribed $52MM debut fund. Over the past 18 months, we have made 15 investments, incubated two companies and did two SPVs. We are focused on pre seed / seed B2B SaaS.
I always hated when funds passed on
@braze
. I took it personally. It’s hard not to as a founder. You feel like you let your whole team down too. Take that energy, convert it into grit, hear why they are passing and focus on the next one. You want investors who believe in you!
💪🙏🙌👊🚀
@Braze
Q3 earnings review: $256M quarterly revenue run rate, 63% YoY revenue growth, 93% subscription revenue, 1,247 total customers up from 841 as of October 31, 2020. Full earnings release below.
Interesting how Musk wants to lift lockdowns ie people can start driving. And how Zuck wants a slow lift on the lockdown. Ie stay home and use social networks and messaging apps. 🤔
New decade, new challenge! I am excited to announce that I’ll be joining
@americandream
as Co CEO. My team from
@wearefourpost
will be joining me as we embark on this new chapter together. 🙏👊🙌
We announced this a couple days ago but I wanted it to soak in a bit before I shared this myself. Really special yet humbling to see us hit this milestone. Congrats to my entire team
@Braze
you all deserve this.
In Q1 2016 we were raising our Series C at
@Braze
, the market crashed, SaaS multiples declined to their lowest levels, many investors backed out of meetings/calls, but we kept pushing. Keep you head up founders remember why you started your company, you got this!
@nikitabier
I called Pepsi had a soda machine delivered to my school. All checks were sent in my name to my home till the school caught on (after a year). Parents not thrilled. 🤷♂️
A note to my portfolio companies: Im sure many of you saw the news about Hopin selling its assets with its core business now being worth several hundred millions of dollars. Hopin was once valued at $7.8B! Same goes for Clutter who sold for pennies on the dollar and I'm not
When me and my co founders started
@Braze
we were the “unknowns” in the market. The Underdogs. There were MANY other founders and players with much more cred then us. Being the underdogs is what allowed us to win. As a founder you always want to keep that underdog mentality.
Hearing the news mere hours after returning from Israel with my family, we are in utter shock and outrage by the barbaric violence perpetrated by Hamas. Beheading of babies, rape of women, kidnapping of children, all attacks on innocent civilians, this is what pure evil looks
@yarbroughcam
This is all healthy as it’s pushing you for a good balance. But what’s missing is what your partner is going through to enable you to do what you do. Both mentally and physically. I feel a lot of folks dismiss this. Cheers to our significant others!
Incredibly proud of team
@Braze
🙌 FY23 Q1 earnings review: $310M quarterly revenue run rate, 62% YoY revenue growth, 94% subscription revenue. Check out the full earnings release below.
This past quarter (Q3) we made five new investments: 2 core. 1 access and 2 follow ons. One of our cores was our largest check into a single company. We’re leaning in.
In the early days of building
@Braze
I was invited to a happy hour. While there a ceo/founder of a company in our space came up to me ranting about how a competitor of ours is kicking our ass and how terrible of a company we are. Neither his company or the competitor exist today.
I wanted to share that
@gynger_io
officially launched on
@ProductHunt
. The support from the
@Twitter
community would go a long way. 🙌. Please check us out and ✅ thank you!!
No Pipe no Sales, its that simple. I see so many companies saying they want to hit $X in net new customers in a quarter. But have 15% of the pipe to get there. You typically want to see a 3:1 ratio in your pipe to hit your numbers. In the early days I would go as high as 5:1. If
One of the hardest things for a founder is delegation (me included). You naturally want to be in the weeds with just about everything. That does not scale - at all. The best startup founders know how and when to delegate. Become a master delegator, trust your team to execute.
This is when I started to think about building
@Braze
(Appboy). The iPhone changed my life. I wonder if Steve Jobs knew how impactful the iPhone would be.
@braze
today has over 1200 FTE. Is Public. This is just one company born from the iPhone.
First pillow was a gift
@bfreece
got me in the super early days of
@Braze
. Second pillow is what
@Eli_Gher
got me at the IPO. Now they both sit in our
@mxvcapital
office. LFG!
Everyone's WFH, this is not WFH its WWF, "Working With Family", its a continuous balancing act between work, home, kids, wife, partner, yourself, your mind/body, its hard. Know that you are not alone and work with your family and ppl you love. 🙏
Shana tova to everyone celebrating. Use this time to reflect on yourself. How can you grow and make a positive impact on yourself, family, friends and the world. 🙏
What a rollercoaster of a week, make sure to use the weekend to refresh, get your mind cleared up and ready for next week. Spend time with family/friends. Sign off for a bit. Tell your team its ok to sign off. See you on the other side. 👊
Every time
@Braze
announces earnings I think about the early days and grit we all had. Congrats on another quarter! Braze FY23 Q2 earnings review: $344M quarterly revenue run rate, 95% subscription revenue, 55% year-over-year revenue growth.
Walking with my Appboy (aka
@Braze
) tee on. Someone ask me if I am Mark, I say yes, then he asks me if Appboy is still around, I smile and say yes it is. 😉
Instilling confidence into your sales team is key. It can make or break the team. I always loved digging in with my sales team
@Braze
. Hearing what was working vs not. Once a BDR / AE feels unstoppable nothing can stop them. Your competitors will feel it too.
I dont believe in coincidence, everything happens for a reason. What an amazing journey which was brilliantly executed by my team and co founders at
@Braze
, lets keep pushing ahead! Thanks for the intro
@bipulsinha
😉
Serendipity, vision, talent and drive are how
@Braze
is built - I accidentally ran into
@billmag
and
@jon_hyman
on a Manhattan street corner on the way to
@TechCrunch
Disrupt, connected them with
@Markgher
and the rest is history.
Sales tip: When selling and trying to set up times for a meeting with prospects. Always offer times first instead of asking the other party for times that work for them. In most cases you will lock in the meeting quicker.

Back in March, I spoke on SaaStr Build about my journey /learnings building Braze. The founding story, how I met my founders, grit, hiring, underdog mentality, fundraising, 2 weeks of payroll left, our ah-ha moment and more. Let me know what you think.
For those unfamiliar with Gynger, we are a software and infrastructure financing platform that helps businesses buy the tools they need to grow. By enabling businesses to purchase these tools with flexible payment terms–regardless of what their vendors offer
A lot of people talk about the importance grit and persistence in the early days of a startup and throughout the journey. But not many speak about intuition. Don’t be afraid to lean on your intuition.
Asked how to stay in the “Underdog” mentality: Staying humble. Knowing someone is thinking better, stronger then you, celebrating your wins but learning from your losses. Always looking to learn and get better. But staying humble and aware is key.
