A Southern Dogtrot house.
Bedrooms on one side. Living and kitchen on the other side. Cooling breeze funnels naturally thru the open center. Very popular design prior to air conditioning in the South.
Brief introduction for the new followers: I began clearing trees deep in my rural AL forest a year ago, camping, and building driveway, then garage, and utilities. I'm on site since the start building everything solo. Appreciate y'all following along on my adventure.
THREAD; So, you wanna build a modern pole building and you're not sure where to start. "Screwing down tin doesn't sound too hard, but how do I get there?" Here's a step by step guide (my way) to building a small barn/garage. Much of this also applies to decks and porches. (1)
Checkout at Piggly Wiggly - Thin fella on crutches alone, card denied, sorting out items he'll do without. He just mumbles, probably drugs. He fell twice. I motion the cashier to ring it all up. The two cutest Lil boys waiting on him outside in car. Made the right call.
We've got coffee, loafing, bible reading, hiking, porch sitting, hammock naps, and guitar playing on the schedule. A cool, calm, and clear skies morning in the 'Heart of Dixie'
Sundays in The South
I made a deal with my elderly neighbor (she's a fantastic cook) where I buy fresh wings in bulk, she cooks em, and we split em. She thru in some taters this time too. Best deal ever!
I ain't sure how this works. We might be 'going steady' now.
How J.D. Vance saved my life!
Most y'all don't know this, but I have deep roots to Appalachia KY/TN and briefly worked in Cincy/Dayton area. Many years ago, I'd married a gal from up north. Real high flutin folks. My family was poor, had accents, and didn't dress fancy. Her
I've never been rooted or attached to material items. A week ago, I couldn't have promised I'd never sell this cabin. That sure changed after burying my buddy in the side yard. I'll never leave here. No way. The bottles were hers. She'd lay em by the woods edge and guard em โค
I have a neighbor couple a few miles away. I feed their animals when they travel. Invited em over for supper last night and she said "follow me home. I got something for your table." Gave me an oil lamp as a housewarming gift โค
When the neighbor calls needing help, you don't ask questions. You just go. And if ya made bacon cheeseburgers and fried taters last night, you take him and the Mrs some dinner.
My best advice to everyone:
Mute these losers. Forget they exist.
It'll never be easier later. Make big decisions. Shoot your shot. Take risks. Get married. Have babies. Take that trip. Laugh in the face of fear. And build your dreams. Start today
Well, a friend of mine told me of a cabin
And he told me it was the perfect Southern cabin
I wrote him back a letter and told him it was not the perfect Southern cabin
Because he hadn't said anything at all about porches
Or rockers, or sunroom, or homemade kitchen, or hammock
My folks brought me their old table, chairs, and used recliner as a housewarming gift. (I've pulled the leaves) This is the table I ate every meal on growing up, and I cherish it. Lucy got a new bed too.
The old man was 79 yrs old and crawled up next to his rake in the 95โฐ AL sun. I didn't know him, but my gut said go back. I wrenched broken teeth off while he told me about the army, falling in love, his puppy Dixie, and his great grandson's stolen base. I coulda stayed all day.

I could've easily sidelined this adventure 2 yrs ago cause I was very comfortable and the world was coming apart. Don't put your dreams 'on hold' cause the world is scary. Take that job. Have them babies. Travel. Move. Be alive! To hunker down is to already be dead.
15 years ago today, I hung these hooks up and walked away from $36/hour to farm. Ain't seen a paycheck or made that kinda money since. Best decision I ever made! Farming led to construction. Agency meant i was there on the bank fishing with pops and his grandsons. The old
In '06, I bought a brand new Chevy 2500 4x4, manual trans, manual windows/locks, rubber floors, long bed for $21,000 cash out the door. How times have changed.
Really happy with how my rough treated siding has dried last 4 mos. I assumed there'd be several boards warp and need replaced, but zero. I nailed just above a 1" overlap. Half lapped the few end joints. It'll be ready for caulk and stain soon. Great siding option for $1.40/ftยฒ
Don't look deserted to me. I see daddy, just home from the textile, in the shed fixin the Farmall H carburetor. I see 4 barefoot youngins chasing chickens in the yard. I see the oldest daughter in the swing reading a book. I see momma, with another on the way, cranking out ice
