4 years ago, Mel and I decided to sue Riot. We were fed up. The process was hard. It took a lot out of us. The suit got bigger and bigger. It turned into a class action. It involves more and more women. We had to tell our stories over and over and over along the way.
Now, finally, the settlement has been approved. 1500 women will get a tiny piece of what we’re owed for the systemic abuse we were subjected to. I’m relieved it’s over and angry at how long it took.
Thank you to the amazing people in my life who were my rocks through this process. And to those who turned away when we needed help, fuck you and you’re welcome anyway. Enjoy your check.
I shared my story because something needs to change. I don't ever want anyone to go through what I went through, what countless women have gone through at Riot.
And while the farting and crotch grabbing were disgusting, let’s not downplay that men in management right up to C level were, on and off campus, molesting candidates and assaulting women up to and including roofies and rape.
Being a face of the biggest equal pay lawsuit in gaming history has closed a lot of doors for me. It’s hard to describe the horror of realizing one of the men you’ve accused of disgusting behavior is now in a position of leadership at the studio you’re interviewing with.
FYI for those waiting on news, the settlement with Riot’s been approved. After 4 years of work, this is finally, FINALLY over. And I never, ever want to talk about Riot Games again, thanks.
You know what’s super fun? Having your dog grab a toy and cuddle you. Until you realize it’s not a toy she’s gnawing. It’s a rabbit she caught and somehow smuggled into the house.
Next time someone reveals abuse in the games industry, I’m gonna need y’all to remember how swiftly and loudly you cut this woman out.
Where was this concern for safety when the Riot lawsuit started? How many of you cut ties with those named? How many are still in your discords?
Hey so if you applied to those writer roles and you had absolutely zero knowledge of the specific cultural areas we requested, you should be ashamed of yourself.
This is why we don't have enough diversity in writers rooms.
Hey writers, we've temporarily opened up the application again. We are EXCLUSIVELY seeking writers with specific & accurate knowledge or lived experience in one of 3 cultural and social identities. Read the job posting for more info:
Want an inside look at the horrors of speaking up in this industry?
This list, which I truly deserve to be on, is run by an org whose advisor list includes… one of the founders of the company I sued! 🙃
This happens a lot!
I’d love to be nominated, if you’re so inclined.
This year
#TheGameAwards
will induct our third FUTURE CLASS.
We're looking for 50 individuals who represent the bright, bold and inclusive future of gaming.
Know someone that should be considered?
Submit a nomination here through October 21:
I’d still love to work with a team to create something visionary, though.
So, game studios, hire me. You want my narrative skills.
And you don’t have to worry about me suing you, because you don’t have men drugging and assaulting their coworkers at your studio, right?
Right?
With a day to process, I feel light. Seeing people receive their Riot settlement checks marks the end of this chapter for me. This years-long fight for our abuse to be recognized is finally over.
This is just one battle though. I hope we set the example: collective action works.
Some quick FAQ about our settlement with Riot Games:
Note that we’ve reached an agreement to settle but it still has to be approved by a judge.
Eligible folks will be notified when that happens.
Patience, friends.
Being a woman on the internet is exhausting. It’s amazing how many dudes who’ve never made anything have informed me that it takes a lot to make a game. Thanks for the feedback I guess. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to get back to doing the thing I’ve been doing for decades…
SEEKING ILLUSTRATOR for a picture book featuring brown skin. *Experience having brown skin especially welcome.* Please send portfolios to submissions[at]kanepress[dot]com
I’ve had to create my own doors. It’s hard, but so rewarding. My game releases soon, and I couldn’t be prouder of what it represents for me and those like me.
I've put a lot of heart and intention in GOOD BONES and was so excited to talk about it and my studio with
@Shannon_Liao
for
@washingtonpost
. Big thanks to all for the support of my cozy/haunted game.
Because certain people are confused:
Things that could possibly qualify you for expertise on a culture:
- lived experience in that culture
- advanced education about that culture
- deep research about that culture
It's a big gamble for me. But I believe in my skills and this game. And you can make it less of a gamble by heading over to add my game GOOD BONES to your wishlist right now:
When you're in survival mode, pushing through takes precedence. The feelings come later. I've been in survival mode for years. With the lawsuit over, everything's hitting me all at once. It's a lot to process. Here's how you can support me as I move forward:
Of the 500 applicants we got, 375 stated plainly they had no experience or knowledge in these areas but applied anyway.
We had to close down the application because we were overloaded, and it turns out you wasted our time and blocked folks with actual experience from applying.
Hey! This week in particular I could use some help showing that my game featuring queer women of color is commercially viable. If it sounds like something you'd like to play, hit that wishlist button if you haven't yet? Thanks <3
The work we have done is finally coming to fruition. I am so proud of us.
You'll hear a lot about the money, which will give thousands of women some justice, but I'm most proud of the institutional change we will codify with this settlement.
Every woman deserves dignity at work.
BREAKING: California judge grants preliminary approval to $100 million Riot Games gender discrimination settlement
Women who worked there from 2014-21 eligible for payments
Big win for those who sued and for CA dept. that's also feuding w/Activision
Special shout-out to the folks who stated in their application they KNEW it was inappropriate to apply and did anyway. You’re a special kind of clown. 🤡
TY for the support re: the Riot Games class action. I hope this inspires the industry to be better.
As for me, I’m on to my next chapter: making inclusive games. My 1st title GOOD BONES drops Spring‘22
✨Pls RT✨& sign up⬇️ to be notified when it’s out!
Having a single friend in a culture does not make you an expert of that culture. Seeing a group of people on the news a lot doesn't make you an expert of that culture.
All you showed is that you have the audacity. Shameful.
October is domestic violence awareness month. DV is rampant in the Latin community yet never discussed with nuance & respect in games.
So I wrote Good Bones. The game comes out Oct. 20th. I hope it makes you feel seen, if you’ve been waiting to be seen.
‼️ ✨GOOD BONES✨is now available to wishlist on Steam! I AM SO EXCITED
Check out my haunting point-and-click mystery and ➡️click that wishlist button so you don’t miss its release!
The racist outrage against the Ariel casting is why it infuriates me when I hear in bookpub "Does just featuring a PoC make this old story new enough?" Yes it does. Look at these racists who cannot handle a Black mermaid because PoC are locked out of canons marked "saturated"
If you haven’t heard, the demo is now available for the game I’ve been working on, Good Bones. It’s cozy yet haunted, and explores themes of domestic violence, parent/child relationships, and grief. Check it out:
Fewer than 3% of women-led startups are able to receive investment from VCs anyway. Add to that I'm a woman of color and the number goes down. That's another topic for another time.
I am extremely bored by white people who spare no expense jumping in to defend hypothetical good intentions instead of renouncing the actual harm done to PoC folks
❤️ If you think stories in games need to do better at reflecting the variety of experiences that exist
♻️ RT if you know anyone looking to hire folks to make that happen.
Looking for my next adventure. I’m a creative pro who specializes in IP development. Appreciate any leads
As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m glad we reached this 1st step toward justice for Riot Games women. The work isn’t over.
I hope this serves as an example for other studios & inspiration to the women there—you don’t have to suffer inequity and harassment in silence. Change is possible
BREAKING NEWS: Riot Games settles the 2018 California gender discrimination suit for $100 million. $80 million will go to women employees and contractors at Riot who worked there between 2014 and now.
What do you do when you have an amazing experienced team ready, but you're all working a billion hours a week to survive and have no free time?
This industry is failing marginalized devs. We don't just have 50 grand each laying around to keep ourselves afloat while we prototype
Things that do not qualify you as an expert:
- appropriating a hairstyle from that culture
- having a single friend in that culture
- seeing a few movies that depict that culture
The struggles in TX are not because they’re “not used to snow”. This is caused by their representatives FAILING THEM. Not investing in proper infrastructure. Isolating their power grid to skirt federal regulations.
I’m not the target audience for the Pedro Pascal fan cams bc he looks too much like my dad in the 80s, and truly every Latino uncle from the countryside, but I really love this sexual awakening for all of you.
This is my official apology for shaming folks like the person who claimed being white with locs gave them expertise to speak on the Black American experience.
“Games workers should be paid fairly for their labor”
and
“Games should be accessible to everyone regardless of economic status”
Are not mutually exclusive values.
On Steam, approximately 19% of those who wishlist end up buying the game within a year of its release. So if I want to use that number as my guiding light, I need to get about 4,750 people to wishlist my game.
In the last year I’ve moved, gotten married, helped organized D&D Fests, settled the biggest lawsuit in gaming history, and made my first indie game. And those are only the highlights.
So what’s next for me? Sleep. Lmao.
I really appreciate all the messages of support about this. ❤️ If you’d like to support me more, wishlist my game on Steam and help me get the word out?
Being a face of the biggest equal pay lawsuit in gaming history has closed a lot of doors for me. It’s hard to describe the horror of realizing one of the men you’ve accused of disgusting behavior is now in a position of leadership at the studio you’re interviewing with.
I still remember the query I got where the writer kidnapped an agent with my name and stuffed her into a trunk. Right into the “give this to the FBI if I disappear” folder.
