I wrote about my heroes (and my dissertation) for NPR.
Starting as a three-year-old, I loved NPR. Robert Seagull (my spelling). Cokie Roberts. Christiane Amanpour.
And now, me and Ronnie.
College students organized beautifully and got the shit beat out of them by riot police across the country this spring, but you called that "the performance of activism"
That nobody has/is/and likely will mount huge sustained protests over SCOTUS indicates something deeply asymmetrical or amiss about organizing culture.
This court has gutted the rule of law and the fate of ordinary people on so many levels and...🦗🦗🦗
Just thinking about the damage mainstream media has done for decades by referring to human rights issues like abortion care and trans rights as "debates"

You could've googled her in a fraction of the time it took you to write this oddly self-righteous tweet, but instead you wanted to be smug online. Your hammered dulcimer isn't rock n roll, Susan.
Motivational Thought for the Day:
Whatever you have tried and whatever your struggles, you are better at all of your things than Betsy DeVos is at anything relating to education

I don't understand how this person doesn't understand that people's shoes go on the sidewalk and the street, and your floor, you wash. There is no cleanliness equation in which they are even close, unless this person is a total dirtbag, which I guess is possible
It's personal for me: it killed my only parent. Throwing a cure around as a campaign promise, especially when one doesn't believe in Medicare for All, is irresponsible and intensely disrespectful to people who've died from it, who've lived past it, and who are in mourning from it
There’s plenty to go after Biden about. But his pledge/promise to cure cancer doesn’t strike me as one of them. For starters, it’s obviously personal for him. But, mainly, it was clearly said as aspirational
Every time this is tested, the result is the same: guaranteed basic income makes people's lives easier. We don't need to keep testing it. We need to do it everywhere.
Results are out for the guaranteed basic income pilot in Paterson, New Jersey where 110 people got $400/mo for a year.
Pilot participants increased their incomes significantly to $24,810 from an average of $16,604. The control group ended up at $19k.
While the control group's

I hate it when cis men who will never be pregnant have really terrible opinions about the inalienable right to bodily autonomy of all pregnant people.

And policing is NOT essential: it's violent and racist and protects only the ruling class. Libraries are essential: books (and all their other services!) are for everyone.

Perhaps folks have been occupied with the many other forms of anti-Black racism that mark their daily lives. And you might consider where your lane as a white woman is in this discussion (firmly to the side).

Unfortunately, his sentencing was a while ago. Last year, two of his convictions were overturned and, even worse, he may get a new trial.

You famously did this with
#MeToo
as well; I'd think you'd be more careful with your words after that. But then you spent a lot of last week attacking a Black activist for sharing information you'd already made public.
@pronounced_ing
@sarahdessen
That "one person" wanted to read a book on racial justice and the carceral state by Bryan Stevenson instead of Sarah's book. Sarah's choice to drag her in front of the whole Internet, especially given that, doesn't seem to me like a great or generous one.
@Zillychu
@muqingmzhang
She spent a week fanning the flames and trying to turn her blatant disregard for another person's right to privacy and safety into a media job. It's disturbing how quick you are give her undeserved credit.
@B_Ehrenreich
I'm not a Pelosi person, and I strongly support AOC, but this is a weird observation for you to make, partly because you're perpetuating this fiction that they're on opposite sides of something
NEW: Filing your taxes could be free starting this year.
The IRS is trying out a direct-file program where you could pay zero dollars to file this year. And soon it might make TurboTax obsolete.
But tax prep companies are spending millions to block them.

I was 11, and I was so lucky to have a mama who has already explained everything! I want all kids with periods to get some version of that. (And kids who won't get periods need to see periods represented, too!)

This is our country. If you think it isn't, you're not thinking about slavery or residential schools for Native children. Or internment camps. We did all those things. Stop pretending that we didn't.
This is not the point of the video, but I love how Trey and Corey are cuddling.
Straight men, you gotta cuddle more. With each other. Like women do. It's really nice, very honestly.

This is not even close to inclusion. They should consider, I don't know, actually promoting books by underrepresented authors.

I'm worried for the person who takes this job if it took public dragging to get you to realize how inhumane it was. How many other jobs are structured this way?

You're doing identity politics here, Dirk. In favor of whiteness and dudeness, which is a choice you're making in public with your one wild and precious life

Pointing out that cops do harm doesn't put people on the hook to slot in a replacement. But abolitionists actually offer lots of real world solutions! They're not immediate and they require reallocating money and meeting people's needs.
@Bakari_Sellers
This is an odd discursive grenade to throw, when you don't live or work in the communities that fought for their rights and well-being, and without evidence.
This is Bear. He hit his head on a cabinet while playing, causing a minor brain bleed. He’s doing better, but still has a head tilt from the resulting vertigo. We’ve paid for the remainder of his care. Please consider getting pet medical insurance. It’s best to be puppared. 13/10

You should look up how often pressing charges actually does anything. And it's interesting that you seem to think that rape is the only reason she should take any recourse.
"There is no mention of Israel and Gaza right now. Do you think that was deliberate?"
AOC defending Harris running away from Israel & Gaza: "I'm sure that this discussion will come up, certainly between now & November. But we also have a wide scope of issues as well."

Are you really trying to claim that holding a napping child is the same as holding a dead one? That's as grotesque a move as trying to limit people's experiences of empathy to having had children at all (and, as hundreds of people are reminding you, the sculptor himself did not)
