Yesterday, I decided to automate our gate door. We were using a clunky remote, but I didn't want to have it all the time. I first thought about replicating the RF remote, but it was using rolling codes. Afterward, I opened the gate motor and discovered it had several I/O ports.

I've pulled the trigger and upgraded my workplace 🖥️. Bought a standing desk with an integrated control unit. A new iMac Pro with VESA kit attached to a Ergotron HD monitor arm. And the plant 🌿 is from a small Coffee shop here in Ankara. Has always been a dream of mine 😊

After adding the relay, I added it to Home Assistant and created a virtual "gate" device. From there, I exposed it to HomeKit, so I could now easily open it from my iPhone.

I needed a smart circuit, that would open/close the 60/61 ports. I bought a dry-contact smart relay, which can be remotely triggered via Zigbee. By default the COM/NO ports are open, but you could enable the switch once integrated.

It feels great to be back in Turkey 🇹🇷and surrounded by your loved ones. I wasn't aware how much stress I put on myself. To make sure I don't put anyone in danger, I did a test and it came out negative. For the rest of the year I'll be resting and spending time with my family.

As someone who works for 8 years remotely, I have to admit that I miss the office. I've learned a lot from my mentors in my first job. People advocating for remote work forgot how valuable a junior/senior relationship is. That is very hard to replicate remotely.

One of my most used shell aliases is `cdr`: alias cdr="cd $(git rev-parse --show-toplevel)" It jumps to the root path of a git repository. It's pretty simple but instrumental in day-to-day usage. Thanks again for the tip @thorstenball ! :)

The whole "use env variables to configure your service" idea needs to end ASAP. It encourages poor writing habits (i.e: globals) and has zero discoverability. Solution: config should be passed explicitly via flags and then use templating to inject envs in k8s, systemd, etc..

I just finished Build from Tony Fadell. I think every founder or to-be founder should read this book. Tony created a book for people who don’t have access to great mentors and coaches. It’s also an excellent read to understand how successful leaders think and manage companies.

As promised, here are photos of the monitor arm from @Ergotron . This is the HX Desk Mount in white. It feels like it's floating 🍃 above the desk, looks better and has a cleaner design. Much more smaller than the previous one, but at the same time more heavy duty.

I went camping 🏕️ yesterday with some friends (Bolu, Purenli), and the place was phenomenal. There was also zero cell reception, so it felt good to be cut off from civilization for some time.

I just finished the book, “User Friendly”. I loved it. Little did I know it was full of eye-opening stories. Even though I’m not a professional designer, I learned much about what design means, especially from a user’s perspective.
