Astrology is worth studying even if it does not work.
It is, after all a cultural practise, which has played a key role in societies everywhere; How it is practised also tells you a lot about that society...
transcend the sidereal/tropical debate: you can do quite a lot of astrology without the signs at all, and instead focus on just what the planets are doing to one another. Dorortheus of Sidon has a long section on planetary conjunctions and their delineations...

Errr. it is slightly more complicated than that. The word in question is 企鵝, Qi e. The word 鵝 does mean goose. However, the word Qi 企 does not mean "business" per se, but rather "Stand up"
So the Chinese for penguin is "Standing goose"

1/ Today I want to talk about the Chinese Lunar Mansions. This is going to be a loooong thread.
Many have heard about the Chinese system of Lunar mansions. But to my knowledge, almost nothing has been written about their current use in English.
ancient chinese is fun; it has concise one-syllable words that encapsulate whole sentences in English
黥; to tattoo someone to mark him as a criminal
劓 to cut off the nose
刖 to cut off the foot
笞 to be beaten on the buttocks
斀 to cut off the genitals
I've studied Chinese for over a decade. In doing so, I've learned ancient wisdom through the language.
New ways of being, in words that cannot be translated, but are deeply intertwined with a unique culture. One we can all learn from.

In English, it seems the word 'Daoism' refers to three distinct- but nonetheless related- things
1- A form of philosophy, exemplified by texts like the Laozi, Zhuangzi, etc
2- Liturgical Daoism: The religion exemplified by the Heavenly masters/Zhengyi, Quanzhen Daoists...

On decans
1.The decans are one of the oldest parts of astrology—you will find them in ancient Egyptian texts. They are still used today, mostly in the context of essential dignity.
"Carrying joss papers" -- i.e. paper offerings to the gods and ancestors.
What seems to be carried are ingots made of folded paper. As these are hollow, this explains why they had to be carried on a pole (other methods would squash them) and also why so many colud be carried

You may aware of the "Lion Eating poet in the stone den" 施氏食獅史; by the linguist Yuen Ren Chao. This is piece of writing where every single syllable is "Shi"
Chao wrote another similar work: “The tale of Concubine Ji striking chickens” 《季姬击鸡记》。
Cringe at this if you will, but what you see here is actually an excellent example of how the western world-- or, more precisely, the USA, has organically invented a kind of lunisolar calendar.
iirc there was another case some years back where a boy was similarly referred, when his teacher thought he said "I live in a terrorist house". What the boy actually said was "Terrace house"

Dion Fortune, who by her own admission is not a Sinologist, noted that the Chinese founding philosopher of Taoism Laozi’s name 老子 is translated to “Old Boy,” which she then wonders if perhaps the better translation would be “Eternal Child.”
There is a tendency when interpreting Chinese works that deal with the supernatural, to read every such supernatural reference as being some veiled satire about society or politics.
I feel this has been somewhat overdone.
it is a truly marvellous experience when you are able to understand, with no difficulty, a document that was literally dug out of the ground; a document that no living human had seen for well over a thousand years.
仲尼曰:華繁而實厚,天。言多而行不足,人。

Again, the pineapple-- which is a staple offering in the Chinese folk religion-- comes from South America.
Nobody in China would've seen a pineapple until about the middle of the Ming Dynasty,
al-Amin himself showed little interest in rule.
A great patron of the arts and poetry, he preferred the company of his male pages who he took as lovers.
He was even reputed to have been the paramour of Abu Nuwas the father of Arabic poetry and the original Arab twink.
the image is supposed to represent Benzaiten-- the Buddhist version of Saraswati. The fact that this goddess of good fortune is trapped in a box and made to dance whilst looking extremely eldritch all the while is a good metaphor for what has become of esotericism.
On the contrary; these are the modern analogs of the the 'hundred schools of thought' of Warring states China, like Laozi, Zhuangzi, Hanfeizi, Kongzi, and indeed Sunzi: manuals for living in a rapidly changing social order and/or means of getting ahead of your rivals.
Am absolutely convinced that future generations will look at this genre of books with the same disbelief at our superstition as we look at early modern witchcraft manuals.
yeah, modern conversational mandarin is cool but why not LEARN CLASSICAL CHINESE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY WITH ALL GODS, BODHISATTVAS AND PEOPLE WHO DIED IN THE PAST MILLENNIUM
having read it, this book is very, very, very, good.

rough notes about the chinese polytheism in singapore.
By chinese polytheism,i mean that-- the polytheist tradtions, or "folk religion" that is practised by the people of China; at various times it has been called "taoism" or 'daoism' even though that's not a very accurate term
Regarding these "Chop suey" fonts, (example below) one wonders if the wedge-shaped strokes are the product of a person trying to write Latin characters using a Chinese brush 毛筆, which, in untrained hands, tends to produce such strokes?
