Unable to get any patient tested for #COVID19 for about 6 days. Most GPs would have a similar experience. Have told persons with likely symptoms to self isolate. Important to be aware of this, Ireland has unknown but large number of symptomatic persons in the community.

The 8th Amendment was designed to prevent abortion. It has harmed and killed Irish women and has not prevented abortion. It has placed unsafe abortion in Ireland, forced 170,000 to travel and prevented access to healthcare. Time to right this national shame. #together4Yes

I’m conscious that the language used during #cblive was insulting & stigmatising to the 10,000s couples and women negatively affected by #the8th . And there was no testimony from @TFMRIRE on the distress they experienced. Onwards & upwards to #VoteYes on 25th May. #Together4Yes

Tired after a long 2 weeks, 20 hours wearing a mask on-and-off in GP, 60 hours in-and-out of PPE in a hub, teaching in @RCSI_Irl . Kitchen is a state. Dog under-walked. Maybe that partly explains my frustration, but the COVID19 commentary is off-focus & opinion-laden. (thread)

Thanks to the many cross-party committed politicians, working hard and late, to get this historic legislation passed, before #legisl8 moves to the #seanad .

I might bore anyone who is interested, with a few points (thread) about healthcare expenditure in Ireland, but also about GP/ community-based care- all relevant with regards to #slaintecare (1/n)

Dr Andrew O'Regan is very wrong on 'conscientious objection' and 'freedom of conscience' #pknt : ◾️Doctors have, are & will ALWAYS be allowed to refuse care to women regarding abortion care. His freedom is preserved. ◾️Call it as it is: Conscientious objection = refusing care.

€75 million given by taxpayers to the provision of healthcare in private hospitals amounts to defunding public healthcare &an inefficient unsustainable duplication in the system. A truly disheartening lack of political ambition at the zenith of our economic growth.Bad politics.

.. reached. And then, this organisation abandoned her. She then found MyOptions and saw me after 12 weeks. Devastated by their deceit. 2/ Two women attended them, but fortunately saw through it, found MyOptions and received care in Ireland. @freesafelegal @Doctors4Choice

The 3 most important health-metrics which will highlight success in our #covid19 response are: a) Deaths/ day (& per million pop) b) ICU admissions/ ventilated pts c) Number of HCWs diagnosed [Numbers diagnosed means relatively little w/out an appropriate denominator]

@susmitchellSBP What medical evidence could have possibly led this judge to accept ‘absolute confidence’ as a standard? This is dangerous- screening & diagnostic tests have errors- and will never change (the lack of absoluteness is part of the consent process).

The medics & biomedical scientists having a ‘definite’ opinion on ‘the good science’ behind public-mask-wearing is bizarre. Public-wearing of masks may be a binary policy decision, but the evidence is very uncertain. Evidence based medicine requires humility. #COVID19

1. Therapies are repeatedly hyped. Apart from anti-virals for chronic illnesses like HIV and hepatitis, there are few effective anti-virals for acute illnesses. It is unlikely that a drug will aid the COVID19 crisis globally, never mind in some selected rich-nation-ICUs. It would

On #DriveTime at 5.15pm discussing #ConscientiousObjection - Neither IMC or legislation use the word ‘referral’ - But a #CO cant say nothing... they have to impart sufficient information to the woman to enable her transfer her care elsewhere. That’s not hard! Women need care.

The new campaign by the @MarieKeating is well-meaning, but has significant potential to cause greater harm than good. This thread is not to undermine the fact that #prostate cancer is a serious healthcare problem, for men and the healthcare system, nor is it meant... [thread]

@trishmhorgan @tvcritics @campaignforleo @SimonHarrisTD @Startdoctors Won’t perturb committees doctors. But it’s wrong & needs to be rectified. Protest & freedom of speech is appropriate. But under Public Order Offenses persons should not be able to intimidate patients, who might by vulnerable & need to access the building. Action is needed.

Excellent letter setting out what screening is, how it is different to a diagnostic test, the uncertainties inherent in screening, how our services perform v well by international standards, what interval cancer diagnoses mean, & the issue of retrospective bias with audits (1/2)

Do know what’s a disgrace? Inaction on #exclusionzones . Women forced to walk through placards in multiple parts of the country this week- in General Practice and our hospitals- as they access healthcare. Solutions are there. Have to ask why would government let this continue?

William Binchy, apart from being entirely wrong on this point, is partly responsible for harm inflicted on 100,000s of Irish women. A shameful hypocritical legacy. I trust @ivanabacik now, just like we should have trusted Mary Robinson in 1983. #8thref
