Some days it just flows and I feel like I’m born to do this, other days it feels like I’m trudging through hell. Every day I make the choice to show up and see what I’ve got, and to try and be better.
My advice: keep showing up.

Tried real hard today. Love that I get to do this for a living. Thank you
@brooksrunning
for all the support. Thank you fans for all the cheers. Thank you competitors for pushing me to be my best.

Anybody suggesting the Marathon Trials be re-run, just stop. There are 6 athletes who actually have so much to celebrate during this tough time, please don’t crap on their parade.

Yesterday at this time: mentally preparing to conquer 26.2 miles on the roads of New York.
Today: eating a cold slice of pizza while lying in bed and mentally preparing to walk for a coffee.
This is downtime.
And then, one ordinary day you’ll head out for a run. As you’re plugging along you’ll get lost in a thought and lose track of time. When you snap out of it -no matter how long it was- you’ll realize you were running effortlessly. It’s a magical feeling that’s earned, not gifted.
Can confirm: after losing all fitness, the second day back running feels just like the day after racing the
#BostonMarathon
. This is exciting news for beginners because 1) you can know what running Boston feels like and 2) it really doesn’t ever get worse than day two.
Emotional fatigue is real. Poured a lot of energy, over several months, into this year’s
#BostonMarathon
. Physically, I already feel I’ve bounced back. Mentally, I know I am still deep in the well.
#ProTip
: downtime is not solely for physical recovery, don’t rush it.
It’s official, everyone in our neighborhood knows about my Boston Marathon race in the rain. Now when I’m suffering on a run during a downpour I get a bunch of thumbs up and waves — not a single person will offer me a ride home anymore. ☹️
I love people wearing their medal around the day after the marathon. It’s the ultimate shiny distraction from how much we’re struggling to walk normally.
#MedalMonday
Confession: I do the extra add on at the end of the run so I hit the exact mileage on my GPS watch. Some find it crazy but I consider it finishing the job. It sets the tone for doing all the little things.
#SorryNotSorry
Last workout in the books. Kind of milked this one, especially the cool down. Nearing the end of potentially my last Olympic Trials buildup ever — got to say, it’s been a fun one.
#RunHappy
The county placed a giant roadside speedometer about a mile from our home. All previous running goals are out the window and registering max speed is now top priority. What I’m saying is, stay flexible with your goals and keep things fun.
#findsomerunhappy
Marathon training is running yourself right up to your breaking point but backing off before you crack. Marathon racing is for finishing the job in front of an audience.
Almost time to hurt so good.
#tcsnycmarathon
Wear your mask! It may or may not protect you from COVID-19, but it’s certain to keep you from doing duck-lips in your selfie, and that may be our only win for 2020. 😷
Today all turkey trotters get a great glimpse into a pro runners life. Run in the morning, nap, eat, and wear sweatpants all day. Yeah, I’m pretty thankful.
#RunHappy
Welp that was embarrassing. Haven’t been this fit in a long time. Training was good- like really really good. Proud of how I prepared and that I wasn’t afraid to stick my nose in it, disappointed with how it played out. Such is life.
Gonna go have some beers now.

‘Tis the season for sniffing my outer running layers to see what can be worn again and what should be added to Mount Laundry.
Non-runners probably just call it jacket season.
Hear me out — a cookbook that partway through every recipe reveals one ingredient as not for the meal at all(!) but actually just a snack to be enjoyed while you cook.
My past two weeks has been filled with so many heavy sighs. Yesterday a scheduled medium long run unconsciously stretched into a solid long run... and damn it felt good. Sometimes I forget how therapeutic the simple act of running can be.

Cheers 🥃!

Every summer day is a new opportunity to dread how miserable a run in the heat is going to be, and then procrastinate long enough so that you’re right.
Note to self: Workouts are for building fitness. Races are for proving fitness. Understand the objective of the work and be intentional in how you do it.
#MondayMotivaton
ProTip: nobody is towing you to your dreams and goals. Want a podium? PR? To shock and surprise the world? Get out front and work for it. Big things are rarely accomplished without some heavy lifting.
Hell yes I was going to run
#BostonMarathon
this year, 6 weeks after the trials. Haters will say it’s because I’m greedy. Must suck to not know what passion looks like.
Ok. I’m done. Rest up! There’s a full day of watching marathons tomorrow.
“I wish somebody would have told me, babe. Someday, these will be the good old days. All the love you won't forget
And all these reckless nights you won't regret. Someday soon, your whole life's gonna change. You'll miss the magic of these good old days.”

Not my typical music genre. Not my typical buildup. But, made it to my 9th Boston Marathon start. Ready to fight another round.

Monday, pie for breakfast.
Tuesday, pie for breakfast.
Wednesday, nails the workout... 🤔
Thursday, guess what’s for breakfast

Oatmeal — because a pie can only last so long, you guys.
15 weeks of predominately double run/double shower days, thus my hair has been perpetually damp for months. The taper is all about freshening up, which really means finally letting my hair dry and checking for mold. This is fitness.
Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand / Workin' in the dark against your fellow man / But as sure as God made black and white / What's down in the dark will be brought to the light
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time ...
After two uninterrupted weeks at home I’ve cruised through four books, logged big miles, and slept like a baby. Note to self: professional running is not a grind, it’s the best job in the world.

Real talk: Is it acceptable to wear 1)sweatpants to breakfast or coffee in your hotel lobby? 2)grey sweatpants? 3) If yes, at what time is it no longer OK?
Asking for a fri... myself. Just asking for myself.
I love a good snow run. They are some of the most physically and mentally taxing yet look like total garbage in the training log. Note to self: nobody gives a sh!t what your training log looks like, it’s the work that matters.

I’M BACK,

! Can’t wait for October 11th and another chance to chase down a place on the top step. Let’s xx go!

Are we hyping the 50k attempt?
EFF YES!
The point is to bring you along. To help you feel invested in the results. Does that guarantee success? Of course not. I hope *we* get to celebrate a new record, but if I fall short, I hope we experience a touch of heartbreak — together.
Which race was better?

's win in Boston?

Make running a healthy habit. Like brushing your teeth, you don’t think twice about it, you just do it every day because if you didn’t you’d feel disgusting.

day 5 - 11. Let’s create a routine and build a habit.

When you were Queen of
#SocialDistancing
well before it was a thing. Welcome, extroverts! 👸🏻
No hugs, high-fives, handshakes, selfies, or close-talking allowed. Puzzles, books, podcasts, headphones, silence, and head-nods all acceptable... in your own home.

Some call it ‘taper time’ I prefer ‘putting on the finishing touches.’ Knowing the purpose of the work becomes more critical than ever.
Today’s workout mantra: Nothing to prove, lots to lose. Believe it’s all within you.

Testing was done ~12days 2019 NYC Marathon. Two varying opinions on my weight/BMI from the exact same race.
Lesson: don’t let the internet or any outsider dictate how you feel you need to look. The only right way is the one where you’re healthy and confident.
This good boy turns 13 soon! Every morning we play a fun game of, “who looks shittier walking down the stairs.” On his best days he jumps over the bottom two steps and easily puts me to shame. Cocky as heck.

Took some time to process my

race. Tried some new things. Learned a lot. Initially irritated but a new experience and more knowledge is incredibly valuable. Train. Test. Tweak. Refine. Repeat.
Onward.

There’s a deeply satisfying feeling in knowing you have the legs to destroy a workout but having the confidence to only do what’s prescribed — in being in control of both body and mind.
This is fitness.
It’s Boston’s 3rd Birthday! Pretty pupset he can’t throw a rager. Would love to see all his party pups celebrating with their favorite toys and treats in replies. 🥳
Out there in the spotlight
you're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy
you try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body
like the music that you play
