Defending climate science. Optimistic, but realistic. Not a climate scientist, but deeply in awe of those who are. Renewable energy supporter. Born @ 317 ppm.
"Norwegian new vehicle emissions plunge as plug-in electrics hit stunning 91% market share."
Just 435 ICE light vehicles sold in Norway in May, a share of 3.7%. This transition can be done. It needs to be done.
"Germany raises the bar on renewable energy with new set of laws for 100 percent renewable power." When Germany says it's going to do something, they usually get it done, on time. via
@ERenovables
"Spanish renewable production exceeds 100 pct of country’s demand for 9 hours."
Up from 7 hours the other day. As more renewables and batteries come on line, the length of such periods will increase and more monolithic generation will go offline.
@JunkScience
Oh look..... a fossil fuel shill does some (very obvious) cherry-picking. Let's look at the last 30 years - the period over which climate is measured....same source as the shill.
"China’s quiet energy revolution: The switch from nuclear to renewable energy."
China scales back its nuclear plans for the same reasons as everyone else. It's too expensive and too slow. It can't compete with renewables.
This is the most urgent energy initiative across all Europe now. Every nation must mobilise all its resources to get off fossil gas as fast as possible.
Renewables can be deployed quickly to reduce Europe's reliance on fossil gas.
The Netherlands and Spain are a case in point. In just 2 years, rapid renewables growth achieved huge falls in fossil gas.
🇳🇱-22% (-17 TWh)
🇪🇸 -17% (-15 TWh)
"Solar is now being installed faster than any technology in history."
By the early 2030s, there will probably be more solar capacity installed than the capacity of EVERYTHING else combined.
@JunkScience

"Renewable energy records blown away in January as wind farms match coal output." Wind continues to provide clean, reliable and cheap electricity - in record amounts. via
@renew_economy
"U.K. wind farms produced a record amount of energy on Saturday, helping to ease the country’s dependence on expensive fossil fuels in the short-term." Yet again we see that more renewable energy means lower prices. via
@business
"Battery storage is dramatically reshaping the California grid, and finally moving it away from gas."
Stage 1: batteries eliminate gas for peak use.
Stage 2: batteries eliminate gas in the summer
Stage 3: batteries and LDES eliminate gas entirely.
"Scientists monitoring 'doomsday' glacier warn climate change happening faster than ever before."
Everywhere, the alarms are ringing ever louder. We must wake up and take urgent action.
"U.S. offshore wind auction draws record $4.37 bln in bids." An update on the auction. 3x more revenue for US taxpayers than from all the offshore oil and gas leases over the last 5 years. Renewables: win for everyone.
"Market operator explains why the lights won’t go out with wind, solar and storage."
The increasingly desperate bleatings of the fossil fuel propagandists have reached the point of being laughable.
"Greta Thunberg joins second climate protest in London this week."
Greta sets a wonderful example, but ALL the protestors deserve massive praise for highlighting the appalling behaviours by banks and fossil fuel companies.
"Renewable power reaches record 30% of global electricity."
Just 20 years ago, wind and solar were 0.2% of electricity generation. Now they are 13:4% - growth of 6700%.
The era of fossil fuels is (too slowly) coming to an end.
"Banks Say They’re Acting on Climate, But Continue to Finance Fossil Fuel Expansion."
Banks are enabling the worst damage to the climate. They need to be held accountable.

"Renewables deliver record-low fossil power in Brazil in February."
February saw just 5.4% of Brazil's electricity from fossil fuels. Brilliant. Looking forward to zero.
"How oil companies are using propaganda and disinformation to derail climate fight." The O&G industry approach is brilliantly exposed in
@MichaelEMann
's book The New Climate War. Everyone should be reading it.
"Boston mayor bans fossil fuel use in municipal buildings."
EVERY city on the planet should take this step. It's obvious. Saves money, saves lives, prevents more climate damage.
"Drastic climate action is the best course for economic growth, new study finds."
It's actually pretty obvious that it's in our own interest to decarbonise rapidly. Whether it's for economic, environmental or climate reasons, it's a good outcome.
"Scientists hail new battery with 4 times energy density of lithium-ion."
I'm impatient for this new tech to reach commercial reality. How soon can it be made to happen?
"Nuclear energy is an ugly duckling in every possible respect: Too late, too costly, too toxic."
Yet again, the argument is clear. There is no need for new nuclear in a 21st century grid.
"Staggering rise of clean energy in China a wake-up call to Australia – including on nuclear."
Yes, China burns a lot of coal, but at this rate, it will peak emissions by its target date of 2030 and coal use will fall - rapidly.
"“Batteries are a good replacement for coal:” Utility unveils another 2,000MWh big battery."
The advent of rooftop solar means that coal is totally uneconomic. Batteries mop up the surplus midday energy and discharge at peak evening time (6-10pm).
"Investing in green energy can boost jobs, report says/"
Lower prices, cleaner energy, more reliable electricity and more jobs ! Renewables have it all.
"Russell Brand is the latest to platform climate conservative Bjørn Lomborg’s ‘reckless’ net-zero cost claims | Temperature Check ."
It's incredibly depressing that anyone pays attention to the idiot and the charlatan.
"Loss of fossil fuel assets would not impoverish general public, study finds."
Despite the alarmism from the fossil fuel shills, nothing to worry about (and lots to gain).
"Batteries the biggest player again as renewable records smashed in California, reach 156 pct of load."
This really shows the way in which renewables and storage work together. More storage and solar will see longer periods of 100% green electricity.
In Spain, electricity generation from solar and wind was greater than electricity consumption (load) from 11:00 am to 6:15 pm yesterday.
Today and tomorrow there will also be times when solar and wind produce more electricity than is consumed.
"Big batteries storm the fossil fuel citadels, and spell the end for coal and gas."
I love the phrase that the fossil fuel industry is being eaten from the inside out. It couldn't happen to a nicer industry (sarcasm!)
"Batteries smash more records as they shift solar to evening peak in one of world’s biggest grids."
Every such record means that less and less fossil fuel usage is needed.
"Climate crisis: last seven years the hottest on record, 2021 data shows." We even have people who seriously think that the globe is cooling. I wonder if it is possible to be more detached from reality.
"Parts of US see earliest spring conditions on record: ‘Climate change playing out in real time’."
Deniers will have to explain why the flora and fauna are somehow in on the 'left-wing' conspiracy.
"Surge in battery storage capacity changing dynamics of the grid."
Batteries: keeping prices lower and increasingly dominating the market. More to come.
"Major sea-level rise caused by melting of Greenland ice cap is ‘now inevitable’." If this does not chill the blood, there is not much that will.... truly terrifying for generations to come.
"I’m a climate scientist. Don’t Look Up captures the madness I see every day | Peter Kalmus." Stark warning from
@ClimateHuman
that ought to chill our bones.
"Killer heatwaves and floods: Climate change worsened 2021 weather extremes." When it's all laid out like this, it is chilling how we are already seeing extreme weather from climate change.
"Battery storage is about to overtake global capacity of pumped hydro."
Pumped hydro has been around for over a century and batteries have overtaken it within 7 years of the first really big battery to be installed. Astonishing growth.
"Australia invests $4.29bn in renewable energy in December quarter, 10 times the previous three months."
Australia has a long way to go, but can get to 100% renewable energy if it steps up its efforts.
"Air pollution from fossil fuels ‘kills 5 million people a year’."
Another study that shows how deadly fossil fuels are.
That's nearly 10 people PER MINUTE dying from fossil fuel air pollution.
"Climate crisis: do we need millions of machines sucking CO2 from the air?" Clever technology, but why not just save trillions by not emitting the stuff in the first place ?
This is perhaps the most irresponsible and appalling statement I have heard from a business figure in a long time.
@shell
, you are a vile company which is destroying the planet.
"South Australia’s remarkable 100 per cent renewables run extends to over 10 days ." Truly remarkable. This shows that with some more storage and transmission, a genuinely 100% renewable grid - with zero fossil fuels - is very close.
"Queensland gets ready for a grid without coal."
This is the state that is most dependent on coal generation and they will get rid of it faster than possibly any other major grid.
"Awash in Toxic Wastewater From Fracking for Natural Gas, Pennsylvania Faces a Disposal Reckoning."
Fracking is a disaster for the planet from every possible angle. Just stop.
"ACT passes first law in Australia banning gas in new homes, as fossil empire strikes back."
The only response that the fossil fuel industry has is alarmism. Get rid of fossil gas.
"Battery storage takes another giant leap over fossil fuels in heart of coal country."
4 hour battery addresses the 'duck curve' caused by rooftop solar generation. Nice. No fossil fuel generator has the ability to absorb excess power.
"Exxon failed to initially report a release of the super-potent greenhouse gas methane at its Permian Basin operations in New Mexico, a region in which its pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2030."
Literally no-one is surprised. via
@business
"38% solar growth pushing wind-solar dynamic duo past coal in 2024."
Wind/solar will surpass coal generation in the US next year. Gas will soon follow coal into well-deserved oblivion.
"French-owned energy company EDF Energy has confirmed that West Burton A, a coal-fired power station, closed at midnight 31 March 2023."
The air quality in the UK will benefit from this closure, as will the climate.
"Climatologist Michael E Mann: 'Good people fall victim to doomism. I do too sometimes'." I have very few heroes in life, but
@michaelemann
is one of them. Extraordinary character : a combination of (green) steel and knowledge.
"Climate scientists shocked by scale of floods in Germany." We are messing with nature and we don't understand how much nature will bite back. More than we thought, it seems.
