The future is modular x integrated Ethereum is often accused of being unnecessarily too research- and decentralization-oriented, while they say Solana is too fast at pushing code to production. What if the upcoming Cambrian explosion of apps in web3 can benefit from both?👇

Cambrian: Restaking SOL to Enable Shared Security on Solana 🟪 Cambrian - modular security layer for Solana ecosystem Modular versus integrated is perhaps the most debated topic in the field of distributed system design today. @solana , with its integrated philosophy, has

1/ With the proliferation and thus the fragmentation of restaking layers, there is a need to bring all the pieces together. Devs and products need a customized gateway in order to utilize shared security.

Cambrian offers a completely new approach to modularity: developers will be able to combine vastly different technical stacks and AVS implementations for individual dApps under their control. The underlying idea of restaking and AVS is that developers can create separate AVSs

A very valid point. For eg SOL stakers have already staked and eligible for ~5% APR. The delta to incentivize them to provide economic security to new AVS' is much lower than the APR stakers of a new token would desire. Shared security is a win-win for SOL, SOL holders and AVS'.

This makes a quite interesting take around staking economics. In new chains & pre-revenue app-chains, stakers using the native token take on higher risk exposure to the asset. So they need higher APR's to offset this risk. This often leads to the high app-chain inflations we

1/5 What problem does Cambrian solve? The continued evolution of web3. At the moment, the modules and projects that are deployed on top of Solana and stack-based around SVM rely only on their own security and consequently rely on their own trust networks.

We believe modularity is key to composability. Cambrian provides apps the flexibility they deserve. It ossifies $SOL's position as the internet money. If bridging vertical scaling with horizontal compute & data sharding excites or annoys you, DM! Yours truly, @gena_with_beard

2/ Cambrian brings together different restaking protocols, by offering efficient and optimized orchestration for different services on top of them. We provide a seamless, single entry point for all Solana restaking protocols, making complex operations easier and more efficient.

4/ Acting similar to a RaaS, Cambrian can help various Solana-native modular frameworks find the way to devs and products. Be it @jito_sol , @solayer_labs , @Picasso_Network or other modular toolkits for networks or modules - Cambrian can work with any of them.

3/ Why Cambrian? Current restaking solutions are too hard to operate and only offer basic control primitives for AVSes. Our orchestration layer automates AVS control strategies and allows you to effortlessly manage the distribution of restakes and AVS across nodes.

4/ Hence, @cambrianone advocates for an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary one. This entails leveraging existing resources to create new primitives instead of developing new basic levels (blockchains), which proliferated extensively between 2018 and 2022.

Strong coordination mechanisms as pioneered by @sreeramkannan at @eigenlayer present a viable solution towards achieving the best of horizontal and vertical scaling worlds. It allows permissionless innovation to coexist off-band while letting value accrue on a stable base layer.

"Solana can't handle the entire world's demand" ok no one said it would ever do that lol it will handle cases that rely on composability and low-latency better than anyone there are still plenty of use cases that will require appchains and rollups, you guys can relax now

New compute networks like @ionet_official , AI projects like @MorpheusAIs @getgrass_io , onchain games on @latticexyz may prefer Solana’s practicality-first approach but might want to use new design patterns like the coprocessors offered by @RiscZero , @SuccinctLabs , @MarlinProtocol

Few deny the fact that both Ethereum and Solana house capable, independent-thinking devs and researchers. Thus, beyond tribalism, it makes sense to question why they work on the areas they do. Ethereum, after all, started as the world’s super computer.

2/ For us at @cambrianone , thoughtfulness, security and stability come first. So one of our focus areas is continuous research to improve the technology, the slashing mechanism and to look for possible risks. This is facilitated by risk segmentation with gauges.

As @0xShitTrader pointed out, local fee markets can be improved 1/ multi-threading doesn’t help if txns access the same state 2/ excessive spam & txns touching the same account outnumber & block txns of other apps 3/ w/o smth like eip1559, it's hard to set priority fees

However, even a super computer can’t power a single popular web service, let alone a decentralized network. Memory accesses and bandwidth bottlenecks make sharded designs more efficient for large-scale applications. This became crystal clear with the recent congestion on Solana.

Cambrian uniquely enables DAs, shared sequencers, social/gaming appchains and DePIN networks to bootstrap their economic security through SOL restakers. It attempts to not compromise Solana security by ensuring that slashable events remain uncorrelated and independent.

4/ If you want to build a huge, complex openwork mechanism - it's not enough just to concretise the foundations, you also need to think about stress and tension points and take into account a huge number of factors.

Even then, the current upper limit of 12m CUs only allows 4 popular apps to exist simultaneously before hitting the 48m block limit. There are diminishing returns to what can be achieved w more hardware. Increasing the number of cores doesn’t linearly increase parallelizability.

3/ But the other aspect of sustainability is also important - a balanced ecosystem in which the restaking protocol does not just represent the economic security baseline, but also ensures that the protocols in it are mutually supported and connected using a wide range of tools

3/ But in the end it also seems to be a evolution cul-de-sac, the development goes towards increasing L3, L4. And these layers require their own security to decentralise sequencers for example. The crypto industry was trapped in a loop from which there seemed to be no way out.

Concurrently, composability is useful to certain kinds of apps but optional to others. Some apps may rather prefer optimizing the execution layer for their use case w/o SVM, have dedicated throughput or even capture the gas fee revenue like @base .

Controversial take that honestly really shouldn't be. But want to put on the table a topic that has been happening in many private conversations. Solana is going to have and needs to have L2s and/or rollups. I don't think these will manifest exactly like the Ethereum ecosystem,

Similarly, developments in the space of parallel EVMs as with @monad_xyz show that Ethereum has room to scale even as a settlement layer. Ultimately, designs that are more elegant long term may not be the solutions that find traction short term.

In the raging debate between monolithic and modular blockchains, it’s clear modular is the more elegant long-term scaling approach. That said, next expansion will be a hodgepodge of architectures, & monolithic is likely to be more mature, potentially taking greater user share.

2/ Protocol devs and architects are the first to see problems that will only become apparent to the community in a few years. This is why recently huge resources have been invested in L2 on EVM - it was assumed that this approach would solve the problem of security inheritance.
