I dislike the term 'frontline' as it unintentionally infers there's a 'backline' that doesn't matter as much.
When the media uses the shorthand 'doctors and nurses', let's remember it takes a village - incl our primary, community and social care colleagues who are so crucial too
Cleaners are under-recognised (and under-paid) heroes of healthcare and I've often thought if, instead, their job title was Patient Safety Associates we would see, recognise and reward them better for the incredible contribution they make to keep patients safer every single day.
Something I think that's too rarely acknowledged in healthcare is how much laughter that can be heard daily in hospitals; between staff, between staff and patients and among patients themselves. It comes from a place of compassion and kindness towards others and is a joy to hear
It's worth remembering that a patient who is 70 now will have been 20 in 1968 and was listening to The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Kinks, Joe Cocker etc.
Inside these seemingly frail older people beats a rock'n'roll heart

Loneliness is the story of far too many older people. It's crippling, can be life-limiting and it's time to change this. And we can. Together.

Thinking of my beloved parents on this very special day. As gentle West of Ireland people theyโd have been proud that something like this could happen to our family
I'm 'stuck' in New South Wales unable to get back to NZ, haven't had the touch of another human being in over a month and desperately miss my son who I've not seen now since Jan last year.
Be kind to others and extra kind to yourself - so each day I come here and find some peace
The institutional marble of the NHS may be battered and scarred but it's a truly precious institution full of social millionaires who each and every day commit a million acts of kindness, value peoples time, dignity and autonomy, and it reminds us why we came into healthcare ๐๐
How gorgeous is this? Southgate tube station renamed Gareth Southgate for 48 hours in honour the England manager who represents so much of the best of leadership; thoughtfulness, respect, inclusivity and kindness.

While the world is preoccupied with what Covid-19 might bring, in the US it's Feb 27th and so far this year 6,155 people have died in shootings.
6,155 people dead in 58 days. If that's not a public health emergency what is?

Timpsons (cobblers) is one of those values driven companies who think 'How can we make society better and gift people a leg up?'.
Not at all surprised to learn they're topping up pay at a cost of half a million a week to look out for their staff ๐๐
The furlough top up for our colleagues to 100% of pay costs us ยฃ500,000 a week, not ยฃ500,000 a month as it says in todayโs Sunday Times. Itโs worth every penny to help our colleagues and their families through some tough weeks.

Time often feels like it goes faster as we get older and yet we occassionally treat older people as if they had all the time in the world.
They don't, they're in a hurry and if time is the most important currency in health and social care, theirs is extra precious

This has been an unbelievably difficult week for us all as a family and it's particularly poignant that we will bury my sister in law Nollaig Dolan on Monday, the day before her 49th birthday - Nollaig being the Irish word for Christmas.
A lovely moment earlier when chatting to a patient in the queue for coffee and said how lovely it was to see them in their daywear. They said they were glad they had been persuaded to get dressed as they felt heaps better for it
Makes our

Four reasons why deconditioning should be given the same focus as acquired infection
1) It's far more prevalent
2) Its impact often continues longer after admission
3) It steals quality as well as quantity of people's time
4) It's almost certainly much more costly
