Written some reflections on the last six months, having refocused on building my consultancy business after three years in the Scottish public sector. Essentially about being adaptable and innovative. Check it out.
It has to be said Mick Lynch of the
@RMTunion
has been an outstanding advocate of his members’ interests. He has dealt with every single interview in a calm and measured way. Round 1 to the unions, I’d say.
What is clear is that Scotland's racial problems are inextricably linked to thuggish loyalism, anti-Irish racism, and anti-Catholic sectarian bigotry. We have a responsibility to describe it as it is.
For a 2nd time in a week these far right wing racist thugs have turned George Sq. into a no go area for ordinary Glaswegians, today they attack a peaceful rally organised by asylum seekers protesting evictions
@policescotland
A few people have asked about my Dad, Frank. I am happy to say he is home from hospital after suffering from covid-pneumonia. Improving slowly, but surely. Enormous thanks to our NHS staff. He simply wouldn't be here without them and their care.
Scottish Labour's outright opposition to a second independence referendum is looking increasingly unsustainable. You can oppose indy and
#indyref2
while still accepting its democratic legitimacy. The question now, for me, is how and when another vote should take place.
🚨NEW POLL🚨 from
@IpsosMORIScot
, out today with
@STVNews
, puts support for a Yes vote in
#indyref2
at 58% (after don’t knows and undecideds are removed)
Well done to everyone involved, and to the Councillors in
@GlasgowCC
who unanimously took the right decision. Only 2% of roads in Glasgow contain RC Churches. Avoidance of these roads by anti-Catholic parades should be standard practice from now on.
BREAKING: The anti-Catholic march due to pass St Alphonsus and St Mary's on Easter Sunday has been re-routed. The march will no longer pass any Catholic churches. Thank you to all those who raised objections!
I think it is fair to say - from an entirely neutral standpoint, of course - that
@AnasSarwar
and
@ScottishLabour
are running, by far, the best and most positive, policy-focused campaign
#SP21
It has to be said that Ian Murray appears to be single-handedly holding the Scottish Government to account over the Nike outbreak more effectively than the combined opposition at Holyrood.
It is now clear that contact tracing after the February Nike outbreak was insufficient. Hotel guests, Lloyds employees and tour guides who were all in contact, were not informed.
Would the public have continued to attend mass gatherings if they had been told?
After 12 years working for the Labour Party, 11 Leaders and one or two elections in between, just like Kieran Tierney it's now time for a new challenge.
This month MAP delivered urgently needed limb reconstruction equipment to
#Gaza
, thanks to the response we received to our Emergency Appeal.
Watch the journey getting the equipment into Gaza and find out how these items are helping to save limbs.
Thank you
@BrianFrancisRoy
for your dedication to our Party. Your experience and knowledge have been invaluable to Scottish Labour, and me personally, and your Gaza cycle ride is a fine example of your commitment to international solidarity. All the best for the future.
A very important decision by the Courts. But this isn't just a Glasgow issue. Local Authorities across the country should be re-routing these parades away from all RC Churches.
@Call_It_Out_
deserve enormous credit for putting this issue on the national agenda
BREAKING: Glasgow Sheriff Court has upheld
@GlasgowCC
's decision to re-route four anti-Catholic marches away from St Alphonsus church this weekend. The court ruled that the council was acting within its powers. Thank you to all of you who have supported us - this is progress! 💪
Every election since 2015 has made it clear Scottish Labour can no longer represent a middle ground of nationalism and unionism.
Neither should it stand in the way of the democratic will of the Scottish people, or ever again be seen to be complicit with the Tories in doing so.
There has been no election result I can remember that has been so alien to my life. A majority Tory Government under Boris Johnson could not be further from my values and beliefs. I am in utter despair about where we go next
#GeneralElection2019
The right decision. He has led Scot Lab to the lowest point in its history. His time as Leader has been mired by bad decisions and poor performance. His leadership has hollowed out the Party organisation and driven talented people out. Thankfully it is now time to turn the page.
I remember all too well that night in 2015 when we lost 40 MPs. Politics aside, it had devastating personal consequences for some who lost jobs. Thoughts with
@theSNP
staffers facing that reality today.
I suspect this will be the beginning of a sustained majority in favour of independence. The real question is how the UK Government and opposition parties in Scotland will react to a potential new 'norm' in Scottish politics.
@ian_corkin
@RMTunion
What he is paid is a matter for his members, as they fund his salary. After today’s performance, I am sure they will think he is more than value for money. Boris Johnson will be paid roughly the same. I know who I think is worth it.
Today
@annmarie_whyte
organised and delivered her last Conference for
@scottishlabour
. Our Party owes her a great debt of gratitude. To coin a phrase, "Thanks for all you did" 🌹
I am excited to announce the launch of my 'new challenge' after leaving frontline politics. Never one to stray too far, Craigview Strategies is a political and campaign consultancy with big ambitions. Read more about it in my blog 👇
What a shameful indictment on modern Scotland when high presence Police are required to protect a place of religious worship. This would be unacceptable under any circumstances, other than apparently an anti-Catholic march past a Catholic church. This should shame us all.
@Simmer_Gently
@RMTunion
Looks like public opinion is against you. If the choice is between some regrettable inconvenience for you and better pay and conditions for the people who normally help you avoid inconvenience, then I know whose side I am on.
For those calling for an investigation into the 2017 election campaign here in Scotland, some facts: between October 2016 and polling day, our vote share increased from 16% to 27%.
The Good Friday Agreement, one of Labour's greatest achievements, was a triumph of the politics of hope. 20 years on we should be looking at what it could finally achieve in the North of Ireland. Not contemplating its demise.
Jenin to Nablus done. An incredible experience. It was very, very difficult. Visited the ancient town of Sebastia where John The Baptist's head was buried. Saw our first Israeli settlement and the security around it. Palestine is the most beautiful place I have seen in my life 🇵🇸
What a welcome back to staff who put their lives on hold to fight an election in December. I would hope the 'backlash' also comes from their trade unions and leadership candidates. And swiftly.
Labour chiefs are facing a backlash over plans to radically reshape party staff structure *before* Corbyn's successor is elected. Regional officials, analytics and elections teams under threat.
There will be many things said and written in
@scottishlabour
circles about Ian Miller. And rightly so. He was a dear friend and comrade, who will be sorely missed. RIP pal.
Well done to
@JamesKellyLab
for raising the treatment of Neil Lennon and wider anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism in Scotland at
#FMQs
. It is right that people are beginning to call out this shame for what it is
#callitout
@Call_It_Out_
Must go down as a bad week for the SNP. Defeated in Coatbridge by-election tipped to win, while undermining the role of trade unions using Thatcherite tactics - once against workers in Glasgow, and now against teachers. Stronger for who?
Good luck to
@MonicaLennon7
and
@AnasSarwar
. My advice to them both is lead your campaigns by example. Do not tolerate abusive or divisive behaviour by your supporters if you do not want to inherit and lead a divided Party.
'Traditional ground war' is fought by the best and most experienced campaign organisers I have worked with. This nonsense is an attack on them and a desperate justification for what Community Organisers have described to me as 'a failed project'. Take some responsibility please.
SCOOP: Leaked report prepared for Labour's NEC today concludes that "Bernie Sanders" style community organisers outperformed traditional ground war — and was rare upside in disastrous election campaign
Paves the way for the rumoured restructuring of Labour's elections machine
My first election campaign for
@scottishlabour
. 1984 local government elections to Motherwell District Council. We won! Lab 24, Tories 2, SNP 2, Indy 1, Communist 1
There has been no election result I can remember that has been so alien to my life. A majority Tory Government under Boris Johnson could not be further from my values and beliefs. I am in utter despair about where we go next
#GeneralElection2019
What to do with all this free time on my hands?
Going to fill it raising as much money as I can for
@MedicalAidPal
🇵🇸
Come along to my (leaving do!) fundraiser on 29th September in St Luke's, Glasgow.
So, basically the result were manipulated to the point whereby they suited the expectations the government had of pupils in schools with significant deprivation? Talk about a rigged system.
“Can you look a young person from those most deprived backgrounds in the eye today and say this system is fair?”
@C4Ciaran
asks Nicola Sturgeon about the disparity between the exam results of pupils from deprived areas and those from wealthier ones.
Flying the flag in support of
#climbforpalestine
at the top of Ben More today in my
@aida_celtic
top. From the mountains to the sea Palestine will be free 🇵🇸
40 years ago tomorrow my Dad, Frankie Roy, was arrested on a picket line outside a steel stockholder's yard in Mossend. 3 months later I was born in the bed beside another boy, the son of my Dad's arresting officer. 1/6
Well done
@jackiebmsp
and
@Daniel4Southern
- two outstanding campaigners and thoroughly deserved wins. Disappointed for
@JamesKellyLab
- rarely met someone more committed to their local community. Not the last we'll hear of James, I'm sure.
Very hard not to draw comparisons between today and yesterday in Glasgow. One the cause of labour. The other of nationalism. The fight is too great to divide the working class as nationalists would. My flag is red and my cause is labour
#MayDay
Constructive and positive meeting tonight setting up a campaign to call out anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism. Some great ideas. Well done to the organisers and those who attended.
Why should it be the responsibility of nearly half the pupils of Motherwell, Wishaw and Bellshill to appeal 'the SQA's flawed grading method'? Surely the system is the responsibility of politicians and the SQA.
#SQAResultsFiasco
I have written to Education Secretary John Swinney to ensure local pupils who have been denied a fair assessment of their ability due to the SQA’s flawed grading method have access to a robust and rigorous appeals process.
Absolutely delighted for Neil Lennon, Scott Brown and the rest of the team tonight. Celtic legends who made history. This is how it feels to be Celtic 🍀
Well, this is a strange feeling. First election since 2007 where I will not be working for the Labour Party. My thoughts are with all Party staff telling their families that they will see them again in mid-December!
Delighted to see
@AngelaRayner
put herself forward for Deputy Leader. She has the ability to unite the Labour Party and has the values needed to reconnect with the communities we seek to represent.
As
@Gedk
loses his seat, amidst the political mud-slinging, remember the Parliamentary staff who are tonight out of a job. Ged and his staff were a superb team and goes to show just how cruel politics can be sometimes.
Day 4 from Jericho to Bethlehem. I have never experienced anything like it in my life. Trekking and cycling through the desert, through an ancient monastery, to the place of Jesus' birth. This trip to
#Palestine
with
@MedicalAidPal
will be one I treasure forever 🇵🇸
Last 50km of the cycle for
@MedicalAidPal
today - it has honestly been more difficult than I ever thought. The heat and the hills have been brutal. But worth every ache and pain, considering the need of those who benefit. Please, please give what you can -
I decided to stay out of the Scottish campaign, but this from
@MattKerrLabour
co-chair is outrageous. To attack dedicated members in our CLPs shows utter contempt for them and the hard work they do. Matt should distance himself from these comments, as I am sure he will.
Congratulations
@jackiebmsp
on her election as Deputy Leader. The challenge has never been greater, but there is noone more experienced than Jackie to drive Scottish Labour's campaigns. Best of luck.
This picture perfectly captures the compassionate and caring
@jeremycorbyn
- our country will simply be a better place when he becomes Prime Minister
#ForTheMany
Setting up the Gordon Aikman Leadership Programme was one of my proudest achievements as GS - and the number of candidates delivered through it is testament to its success. Glad to hear there has been a commitment to keep it going.
@LabourRichard
has given MSPs a commitment tonight that the
@scottishlabour
Gordon Aikman leadship programme will continue. Many politicians stepping up to make sure it does.
Wishing everyone, regardless of race, colour or creed....oh sod it, or political persuasion, a happy and peaceful Christmas. Look out for those who need it most.
Momentum is everything when it comes to elections and polls. It is clear that
@scottishlabour
and
@AnasSarwar
has it. With a week to go, I predict that Anas can pull out a massive result and push the Tories into 3rd place vote share. Can they convert votes into seats?
I hope all of the
@UKLabour
and
@ScottishLabour
staffers have had the chance of some well earned rest over the past few days. The unsung heroes of election campaigns. Well done all, and in particular the fantastic
@JohnPaulMcH
and his team! 🌹
To suggest or infer there is any reason to investigate current and previous Scottish staff about their intentions or commitment, does them a grave disservice. We should be better than this. If the allegations are solely about me personally, then have the courage to say so.
When I visited the Occupied Palestinian Territories with
@MedicalAidPal
I saw first-hand how the Israeli occupation undermines Palestinians' access to basic services.
@MedicalAidPal

A massive thank you to all the fantastic climbers from
@pennyappeal
for their support and encouragement climbing
#BenNevis
. An outstanding effort from every one of them.
Incredible and emotional day. From ancient Nablus to the only Christian village in the West Bank, Taybeh. Overlooking the Jordan Valley - under Israeli plans it will be annexed, taking with it vital Palestinian water supplies. This country is as beautiful as you could imagine🇵🇸
It was an honour to pay tribute to Maria Fyfe tonight on her birthday. A friend and comrade who has done so much for Party. She stands shoulder to shoulder with those who have struggled before us, for peace and social justice. A giant of our movement 🌹✊
Some of us are lucky enough to work for the Labour Party, and some, like Kerry, simply are the Labour Party. She will be a big loss, but I am grateful to have had her as a friend and colleague for such a long time. I owe her a huge debt of gratitude. All of Scottish Labour does.
After 16 years, countless elections, by-elections, visits and events, regrettably now is the time to move on to new challenges. It’s been a privilege to work for the Labour Party and I am proud of the work and commitment that me and my former colleagues put in over the years.
