Two years ago, my mentee was diagnosed with cancer very young. It was sudden and unexpected. She was determined as heck though and filled with grit. Once things settled a little I offered her a project to work on to keep her distracted with NO timeline. 🧵 1/10
I’m sharing because I want to celebrate her life and what she made of it in the time she had. I hope I can do justice to the reviewers comments and get it to the finish line. At that point, I will return to ask you all to raise a glass or a piece of cake. Till then, 🤗. 10/10
Since then I’ve been at sea a bit but yday I pulled everything together and submitted her first ever peer-reviewed publication. I even included her cover letter along with my own. She will remain the first author and I will make sure of that. 7/10
While she will never see its publication, her hard work cannot go unseen and I hope this paper serves as part of her legacy. Once published, I will present it to her family. I’m so proud that I had the opportunity to witness her life as I did. I’m sharing this story because 8/10
I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can best support people.
What little, well-timed things can make a difference. I’m sharing this because she had much to offer and I looked forward to working with her in the long-term. 9/10
Two weeks later, I got the sad news that she did not make it. She was young, gritty, full of life, determined, smart and all the rest of it. It seemed so unfair. And her paper! It was just a few days away from submission! 6/10
I did not know how to support her through this trying period except to help her get closer to becoming the scientist and researcher she always wanted to be. She worked on the project when she was feeling good, and things went quiet when times were hard 2/10
I did my best to respond quick whenever she sent me things because I didn’t want to slow her momentum when there were other challenges already on her plate. Then, she started to get better. She kept working on the proj while applying for jobs and I wrote references knowing 3/10
just how hardworking and gutsy she was. Even her diagnosis didn’t stop her from working on the tasks assigned to her. I was excited and hopeful and thrilled! End 2023 I asked her to draft a letter to the editor for the submission. It was perfect! 4/10
I sent her one last round of quick comments and wished her a solidly awesome 2024. She wrote back to say the start was rocky and if I would like to go ahead with submission. I said a firm NO and that I wanted her to submit whenever she was better and ready. I was in no rush. 5/10

I was main speaker at an event in Victoria BC. I went through the front entrance and the girl at registration looked at me and said ‘janitors entrance is at the side’. I said ‘look behind you’. When she turned there was a huge, 5x Asha size poster of my face hanging.
I made the cover story of the most circulated Sinhala women’s newspaper. I don’t even know how to express what this means to me. This piece is awesome - personal and reflective and it made me happy. I could not be more proud!

How incredibly disrespectful. Clearly he lives in THE bubble where he knows no one who has been impacted by what’s actually going on in this country right now. No one he knows queues for gas, fuel, food or has kids who can’t go to school or study due to power cuts. Shame on you!
Ada Derana that helped bring this govt to power derides protests & calls them a “beach party”. It also asks “will it solve the dollar crisis?”.
“Forgets” to say who is responsible for the dollar crisis, i.e. the govt it helped bring to power.
Who will hold Derana accountable?

If this is your advice after you unleashed your supporters on peaceful Sri Lankan protestors, I strongly suggest you seek help immediately. While you insist you are physically well enough to race the youth, you are not mentally well enough to run a country.

Declaration of a state of emergency in the absence of an emergency makes people complacent in the face of a real emergency. Just because you CAN declare something doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Unless there’s a purpose - which there isn’t. This is a full ‘boy who cried wolf’ type scene

reminding us that violence is a doom spiral. Once it starts, it’s hard to reign it in as every little thing acts as a trigger for more. We need to stop, breathe, think. We need to be the bigger people.
But let’s be clear, the violence was inflicted by Rajapakse supporters on peaceful Sri Lankan protestors. They were armed and sent out to destroy us, but instead they have emboldened us. We will build back better and stronger.2/6

This has nothing to do with will and way. This is completely unacceptable! How can we not be adaptable enough to shift the exams to a different venue even if it means starting a bit later? How is it okay for these kids to sit in water through these “important” exams?
Where there is a will, there is a way.
Some students sat for the GCE O/Level exams in flooded classrooms. They were assisted by the Army to travel to their schools/examination centers.

Every time people sit in fuel queues and gas queues... every time our next generation are deprived of an education...we are losing dollars now and in the much longer term. The fact that we are still peacefully peotrsting despite the welling frustrations and anger is remarkable

Dear

The storm has deteriorated our beach in Kinross, i headed down to assess the damage as it’s part of my job and this is a long term project for us (beach variability). I brought just my father as I recognise that it is lockdown despite all the cars on the road. Guess what?
