Just thinking about the inaccurate and misogynistic accusations of Jacinda Ardern being a "part-time PM" as I read that Wayne Brown intends to finish work at 3pm every day and relax on the weekends. For $300k.

Remembering Labour's 2016 conference where Mana in Mahi was launched. Compare it to today's speech. Essentially trying to tackle the same thing, but Andrew Little's speech was about hope, aspiration, and potential. It was uplifting. The framing from Luxon today, vile in contrast.

funnily enough, I had a quick gander at ACT's alternative budget today. It actually results in larger debt and deficits than Labour - because the huge spending cuts are actually less than the huge tax cuts for the well off and landlords

This is crazy. Just totally absurd, unworkable, and meaningless. Even deregulation fans should see such a proposal as absolutely comical - regulations are not tradable tokens (but even the more sensible Nats never call out their own side).

Holy moly. Two things: 1) this guy is an absolute loon and unfit for any political responsibility 2) how the hell did this not come up in the vetting process? Are National really just not doing anything about their broken candidate selection system??

I won't be the only one relieved by Newshub's poll. It was taken straight after the Kiri stuff - a HORRIBLE week I thought might be devastating - but Labour tumbled 3.6%, with National/ACT up even less. Three seat margin, whole campaign to go, far from a "death spiral". (1/2)

What a tosser, honestly. His mayoralty is already such an embarrassment. Going to put my prediction on the record now that he doesn't last the term.

A fun element in National's nightmare of a tax plan is that there's an easy way they could cover a huge chunk of the shortfall in their numbers - cancelling the $2.3 billion for landlords - but of course that would defeat their primary goal of making the rich much richer.

It might not be much (it might even be pretty futile) but god I am proud that our country is leading the global conversation on this. One of the best uses of Ardern's soft power that I can think of.

This is an excellent column - it acknowledges the limitations on Jacinda's legacy without diminishing the huge impact she had. And written by someone who truly knows, and cares, about both politics and possibility. Nice one @GarethHughesNZ

What the hell? If MPs get a week off because of this then they could at least have the decency to pass a one-off public holiday under urgency for the rest of us.

As @GayMaxine points out, it's even worse - National have costed this policy in part by removing Labour's public transport subsidies, but then have ignored those extra costs on families in their calculations of savings for their 'average' family examples. So deeply dishonest.

National's modelling on average savings contains everything they will give - but nothing they will take. E.g. includes their childcare rebates, but it doesn't include the congestion charges that are part of their transport plan. Fake as fuck.

How easy would it be to be a centre-right populist? Focus on what the median voter wants right now, ignore logic and forget the future. Climate mitigation and mode shift? No! Here's a photo of a pothole! Solving the root causes of crime? No! Lock up more kids!

I know it's not new but it still amazes me that the left can ever win elections when the right can fundraise by charging $15,000 for ONE table on ONE dinner.
