I try to figure out why my wife and I invest huge amounts of our money and time into “hobby farming”. (I really dislike the term homesteading - the only guy on here homesteading is the Alaskan guy, what’s his face. He seems in legitimate danger of being eaten by a bear)

I think the golden age of mass human beauty (post hunter gatherer of course) was the brief period after WW2 when people were getting good nutrition (esp micronutrients), but hadn’t yet become obese. Even well-to-do pre-ww2 faces = pinched and off. Weston A Price speaks of this.

Farm n’ Garden goals for 2023: - get geese and ducks - install pasture fencing for sheep - get sheep - plant 200+ trees and shrubs in our silvopasture - scale up root vegetable planting to grow a year’s supply of pumpkins and rutabagas - more perennials in chicken garden

Ok I’m a scythe guy now. I bought the Austrian scythe set on Lee Valley on a whim, because I want a quiet and manual way of knocking back tall grass and reeds. With minimal experience I’m able to clear grass/reeds faster than a string trimmer. It’s really fun!

My home is the rump of a large 19th century farm broken up for horses and subdivisions. Our main field has been continuously tilled for the last 140+ years. It’s crazy to dig a post hole and find not 1 worm in ~10 gallons of soil.

Hoo boy, the 4th trimester with our 4th child is very rough. Obviously I will “hang in there” but the few social/enjoyment outlets I had are off for the moment. Living a zero pleasure lifestyle sucks. We also stopped going to church because it was barely workable at 3.

20 years ago in hs, My AP bio teacher was a wonderful woman who had worked as a lab microbiologist for yrs and pivoted into teaching. She treated the class like an office, which included setting up a coffee maker and letting us ~16-17 YOs get completely ripped on coffee all day

I just want to vent about how difficult small-scale (a few sheep) rotational grazing is to implement. Is there a scheme that actually works without insane amounts of labor? I have a roughly trapezoidal 5 acre pasture I’m trying to subdivide.

I had a grand idea for pasturing chickens on our new property. It didn’t quite work as imagined. 1. Part of our property is a multi-acre field that’s been farmed for the last 100+ years. The soil is already quite rocky here. Very little organic matter going on in there.

@KrisMBarnard I think about this often - economic engine of a small town? Historically it was either resource exploitation (mine, etc) or a settlement of small scale farmers. Now the sort of small towns people like are driven by a college or bedroom for a nearby city.

Unhinged Vent: infancy of our 4th has been extremely difficult for me. The 18 mo spacing with no.3 (whoops) means we have 2 kids that need 100% attention to not die. All the coping strategies I’ve developed over the years (long walks, heavy workouts, sports, involved projects)

@Empty_America It's funny that you mention it. Growing up in the 80s-90s, "Japanese takeover" was basically a movie genre. Our loss was inevitable (American worker so lazy!), and we'd all be working for a zaibatsu doing mandatory morning calisthenics. Don't see that much anymore.
