Imagine being so racist and bothered by an Indigenous woman proudly displaying her culture and heritage in a public setting. Such an ignorant woman probably thinks “war paint” is only worn during football/baseball games by racist sports fan.
This young Apache woman is a shining
I think the saddest part about Navajo Code Talkers Day, aside from the fact that most of them are no longer with us, is that in the nearly 15 years I've been reporting, all the surviving Code Talkers during this time have ever wanted was a Navajo Code Talkers museum, which has
San Carlos Apache Tribal Council endorses Kamala Harris- Tim Walz campaign.
I’m not sure if I’ve seen any other Arizona tribe endorse any presidential candidates as of yet.
The Navajo Nation legislation legalizing same-sex marriage on Navajo was withdrawn weeks ago, but has recently been re-introduced and it has some changes in the language. Aside from legalizing same-sex marriage on Navajo, it will also allow for same-sex married couples to adopt.
yet to happen. Sadly, I’m not sure if there will ever be a museum. I mean there was a groundbreaking for one 2 or 3 years ago, and still absolutely nothing.
I’m not patriotic, if that’s not obvious enough. But I always believed Navajo Code Talkers deserved a museum.
And even if they do build a museum, it’s really disappointing to see it will only be years after the Navajo Code Talkers who really advocated for one - who made getting a museum their life’s mission - are gone.
Makes me wonder, who dropped the ball?
Yes this is sad. But this summer I reported on two separate missing women cases on Navajo. Ella Mae Begay had some media attention from local news stations, and Ranelle Rose Bennett barely even got a mention except for my article. Neither received this type of coverage.
beacon among her Apache tribe. I’ve written about her before! She deserves respect for all she does for her people!
During the fire on her reservation this summer she was volunteering and getting the word out for donations.
There is no hate like Christian love 🙄
Life update: Today was my first day as Arizona Republic’s Indigenous Affairs Reporter. I won’t just be covering Navajo Nation, but I will be covering all of Arizona’s Tribal Nations.
“The media came out when we were high in percentage, high in cases and poor poor Navajos. Now we are low cases and everyone spiking all around us, there’s no media attention. This should be a positive thing for the region, as well as America to look at Navajo as an example on how
It will cost about $3 to $4 billion to address 305 abandoned uranium sites on Navajo Nation.
Imagine if billionaires used the money they’re using to go to space, or buy up stolen Indigenous lands, and put it toward cleaning up these AUM’s.
All this talk about
@OppenheimerFilm
but nothing about the sacrifice during this era.
These are just a few articles I’ve done on uranium on Navajo this year. Haven’t written anything as of late because it’s an ongoing issue that is never ending
She has used her platform to showcase her culture and she’s done an amazing job at it. She is a bright young lady with so much talent, drive and love for her people.
Kyle Jenner was enjoying Slot Canyons, which is supposed to be closed to tourists because of COVID-19. Navajo parks are closed to visitors and tourists since March and are still shut down.
What’s wrong with her head? Is it too heavy to hold up?
Today the Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments on water rights for Navajo Nation.
March 2020, Navajo Nation reported it’s first COVID cases. The result of such a brutal beginning of the pandemic for us was because of two things: multigenerational homes and the lack of water.
Main stream media flocked to the Navajo Nation during the start of COVID and reported poverty porn galore, and it all sounded the same.
But now that Native votes helped flip a state from red to blue, it doesn’t make a blip.
Natives only exist to major media for poverty porn.
Navajo Nation didn’t give me ONE CENT for college. Parents couldn’t afford to pay my way.
I wanted that degree, so loans and waitressing was the only way.
Contrary to popular beliefs:just because you have a Certificate of Indian Blood, it doesn’t mean you’ve got a free ride.
Navajo Nation surpasses 100,000 citizens vaccinated. A goal set earlier this month by President Nez was to get 100k vaccinated by the end of February. This is great news to hear minutes after I’ve received my first dose of moderna.
Thank you Sage Memorial Hospital.
People applauding that Navajo Nation got on front page of LA Times, but Navajo Nation is always front page on

.
We are tiny, but we are mighty! Support local journalism!
In this article by my colleague on the wildfire that happened on her San Carlos Apache reservation last month, it mentions how she used her platform to bring awareness on the need for volunteers while she herself volunteered.
I feel no sympathy for those toting guns and crying about hair cuts, when over 2,000 of my tribe has COVID19 & 71 have died.
Screw your entitlement and belief that frivolous crap is something to protest over, while the first inhabitants of this land are fighting for their lives.
In less than a year the Navajo Nation has lost 1,000 Diné relatives to COVID-19. 💔
As of Thursday night there’s a reported 59 new COVID-19 cases. Reports indicate that 14,275 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 27,987,
RSV cases among children on Navajo has led to Indian Health Services to look for other hospital options in California, Texas, and Oklahoma because southwest hospitals are at capacity with pediatric admissions, according to Dr.Gaines from IHS.
Saw a white guy thinking he was going to walk into a gas station in Window rock maskless. Nope! He turned around and left.
Navajo Nation still has mask mandates in place. So if you’re driving through or visiting Navajo Nation, then mask up!
After successfully passing my required courses at Walter Cronkite I can legit say I have a Masters in Investigative Journalism.
This was a long time coming for me because I had always wanted to go back to school. I can say without a doubt it was a long and difficult journey
to keep COVID-19 virus at bay. They don’t want to tell the success stories, because everybody politicizes wearing masks and staying at home. But we on Navajo looked at the greater good…we are wearing masks because we are going to war with COVID -19.” - President Nez.
Wanna know where masks are still mandated? Navajo Nation.
Has been a mandate since April 2020.
It’s nice knowing that even if non-Navajos came to Navajo and threw tantrums (like they do on planes and everywhere else) their erratic behavior has no impact on this mandate.
I’ve griped about this very thing with MSM. Outside media loves covering Navajo only when it fits the poverty porn and other woeful narratives.
Navajo Nation employees are at 82 percent fully vaccinated, and a mandate to have employees vaccinated looks to be on the horizon.
Watching this Donald Trump shit show is infuriating! 558 Navajo relatives have passed on due to COVID19. Many had to be taken to hospitals outside of Navajo Nation, because our chronically underfunded IHS could not treat them. Many died alone and didn’t receive proper burial
The goal of unfair redistricting was met as trump endorsed, election denier Eli Crane wins election. He will represent all of Apache, Coconino and Navajo county. The Navajo Nation spans through these counties. Talk about silencing the Native voice and vote. Gerrymandering at work
Navajo/Oneida man gets tased for walking off the trail at the Albuquerque Petroglyphs in order to pray. But a white guy shouting through a mega phone, holding a sign, and telling people to repent or they’re going to Hell at the intersection in Window Rock is OK. 😡
Finished up an interview and all I have to say is Navajo Nation continues with its mask mandates. Tourist and visitors don’t bring your attitude to Navajo because you don’t like this mandate. Just follow Navajo Nation public health mandates.
I’m proud of this.I worked hard for this and took a lot of crap for this coverage.Being a Navajo woman reporter covering this(the way I did) was tough.I almost gave up. It showed me who really supported me.The reporting was only me,using minimal resources & having great sources.
This is my dad Archie Becenti back in 2004. He retired from rodeo after a successful 30 year career of riding broncs and bulls. For a time this was how he supported his wife, 3 daughters and 1 son. The toughest Navajo cowboy.
COVID-19 has reached a total of 148 for Navajo as of Monday. Sadly there has been a total of 5 deaths. This includes the two deaths confirmed last week.
I’m pleading with you, please stay home. My heart can’t handle these numbers. ❤️❤️

Such a blatant act of cultural appropriation. I remember when Navajo basketball players were told to take down their tsiiyéél back in 2016, and now models are donning it as if it’s some trend.
Native Americans on TikTok are putting hairstylist Sam McKnight on blast for cultural appropriation after he posted a TikTok in which his staff styled a
@Balmain
model’s hair to resemble a Navajo bun and called it the “Balmain Vertibow.”

“The Navajo Nation continues to be on the right side of history.”
Scenes from todays Navajo Nation Pride festival and market at the Navajo Nation Veterans Memorial Park in Window Rock.
My question is how can we get this same type of global coverage when it comes to one of our own when they go missing? What makes one missing case deemed worthy of this type of coverage over the other?
White people, it’s not the flex you think it is when you come onto Navajo (or any other tribal Nation) and don’t abide by mask mandates. It just means you can’t comprehend the concept of sovereign Nations having its own rules and laws put in place that even you have to follow 🙄
COVID-19 cases has reached a total of 26 on Navajo Nation.
This includes 18 cases from the Kayenta Service Unit, four from the Chinle Service Unit, three from the Tuba City Service Unit, and one from the Crownpoint Service Unit. There are no confirmed deaths related to COVID-19
I stand with
@azrepublicguild
and
@Gannett
colleagues around the country. I also do this for future Native journalist. We need more of us in the newsrooms in order to tell our people’s stories. But we also need to be paid and treated fairly and equally.

Only thing I have to promote is support local journalism. Subscribe to your local paper in your town, city, or community.
More importantly subscribe to the Navajo Times, where you’ll find articles by me!!
In honor of the designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument .
Also, read my colleagues articles on this designation. I retweeted their stuff under the pic. Get Arizona news from the Arizona paper!!
Meet me in today’s Sunday paper “It was being raised in a household where the Navajo Times and Gallup Independent were always present that truly ignited my passion for reporting. Local journalists, like legendary Marley Shebala from Navajo times, had an impact on me.”
As of 2016, the National Crime Information Center has reported 5,712 cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. Strikingly, the U.S Department of Justice missing persons database has only reported 116 cases.
Covering COVID-19 since it hit Navajo over a year ago, and interviewing people who lost loved ones, didn’t prepare me for when I’d lose a loved one to the virus. 💔 Making a sad visit to Navajo.
We are still in a pandemic mask up, social distance, get vaccinated or booster. ❤️
If you’re reading Tony Hillerman and think you know all about Navajo from his books, you don’t.
Here are some Diné authors to read:
Jennifer Denetdale
Daniel Vandever
Sherwin Bitsui
Laura Tohe
Brian Young
Orlando White
Andrew Curley (academic)
Alastair Bitsoi
We Diné are everywhere!
June 1, 1868 Navajo leaders signed the Treaty of 1868, setting free our captive ancestors to return home.
Our ancestors survived the genocidal campaign brought on by the U.S. Even how hard they did/still try to eradicate us: We Are Still Here.
10 new cases on Navajo, everyone. Yep that’s 10 new cases as of today.
That’s 39 positive COViD-19 cases on Navajo. It’s only been a week since the first two cases were identified. Wow!
Stay home! What is the matter with you!
A woman, who runs a bed and breakfast in Goodyear, said to me “that boring reservation” when talking about having to go through Navajo Nation to get to Pagosa Springs. Either she said that to intentionally offend me, or she’s a horrible judge of beauty…. or both. I say both.
Learning moment from Kylie Jenner: there is currently 396 COVID-19 related deaths for the Navajo Nation.
Navajo Nation expanded closure of its government to July 26 (or so), this includes closure of parks and recreations on Navajo Nation .
- Masks are mandatory (since April)
Nothing will piss off non Native/Navajo MAGA supporters in the Grand Canyon state more than when I write about Native voters being victims of voter suppression. I already received two emails telling me my recent article is trash lol. Thanks, ladies. 😉
